This is an absolutely amazing restaurant. For comparison, I went to Daniel in NYC with my husband and we did the multi course dining option with wine pairings, Terroir was well above and beyond our culinary experience at Daniel. This place is not to be missed while in Stellenbosch.

What a lovely setting, and delicious food ! Set on a terrace above the grounds, one can enjoy the amazing food and listen to birds chirp and watch the butterflies flutter by, with a view of the Stellenbosch mountains ahead of you. Service is good. The crumbed monkish with scallops was delicious and so beautifully plated ! Well worth a stop, Ive been to South Africa twice this year and stopped by both times. Highly recommended.Oh by the way, the online reservation bot makes people choose a table indoors, but actually all reservations are for both an indoor & outdoor table. If the weather is good (as is often the case), people can choose to sit outdoors (as most do!)

We been coming to this restaurant biannually for a few years now and noticed at our last visit ,for the first time , that the front of house service was off its usual standard and the menu has become repetitive. What a pity as the food quality is so excellent and the flavours. Michael the chef is absolutely talented but we were left wondering if some of the passion from past years has seeped away slightly.

A very expensive dining experience for local South Africans. Ambiance is ok nothing spectacular with no soft background music other than very loud crickets. The food is good with very small portions. Staff are friendly and efficient. The biggest let down for such an esteemed restaurant/establishment is the fact that they still use plastic straws. No one is perfect but for the prices charged surely you can afford earth friendly straws??We will be back!

We went on Sunday for their winter special where you pay R296 for 2 courses together with 2 glasses of wine of your choice. And we were absolutely spoilt for choice! The food was beautifully presented and you could see and taste that every ingredient was well-though out and the whole meal brought together to bring out the best in each ingredient and the entire dining experience. The food was almost too pretty to eat, but luckily we were overwhelmed by the delicious aromas and tucked right in. The flavors were a fabulous culinary journey. The wine servings were very generous. The waiting staff were both professional and relaxed, making us feel very welcome to be there. It was an all-round fabulous experience and we will be back again!

We had lunch on 14 Jan 2020, was looking so forward to this lunch, but what a dissapointment! The prawn starter was oily with far too much paprika, and some orange thick like porrage stuff on the side, terrible then the fresh fish, well it was dry, bland on wilted lettuce and a soya waterery liquid, also tasteless, all in all not worth the price. Venue in need of upgrade and some plates were cracked! Overall a Very bad experience, we traveled from far to get there, it was a hot day and we were guests. Will not be recommending this venue!

Do not order line fish. The kingklip was dry and the patatos were undercooked. The service was not even 4 star quality. 2 of us at the table got given a dish which we had not ordered. To end it, one of the dessert arrived on a plate which was chipped. Overall it is overpriced for what you get and you expect to get what you pay for.

Went to Terroir while we were visiting Stellenbosch. We had the most wonderful meal. The slow-cooked lamb risotto was to die for and even their understated garden salad was a masterpiece. Im not sure that Ive ever had an anna potato quite so deliciously crunchy on the outside and fluffy and light on the inside and that was just a side to the fabulously succulent south african fillet. The staff were delightful - we were served by a fun, attentive waiter and then had a lovely chat with another waitress. They seemed to have all the time in the world to talk and yet never miss anything when it came to the service. Highly recommended.

On the 25th November 2016 we visited Terrior restaurant. After a lengthy wait at the unmotivated De Zalze security, and a leisurely drive, we arrived at the shaded parking of the restaurant. The design and layout the restaurant was simple, clean and functional. The outside area is well shaded and protected against the elements while providing a great view of the local vineyards. Venue: 7/10The service was outstanding. The multiple waiters that served us throughout the afternoon were all courteous, personal and very knowledgeable. Among the best we have ever experienced. Service: 9/10We were quite shocked when the menu which was functionally written on a black board, was presented. Our expectations were not calibrated to prices. A single main course at Terrior is in the budget league of a standard 3 course meal at any other local, respected restaurant. Price: 4/10Price aside, the dishes were expertly prepared. An incredible standard was delivered, with every element of the dishes being perfect in the tables opinion. The portions are small, but this can be expected from a dining (as apposed to eating) restaurant. Food, 10/10.Final opinion: Terrior is a restaurant catering for foreigners, businessmen (an businesswomen) and people seeking a fine dining experience. The prices do not suit the venue or general impression of the restaurant. If money is not part of the equation, it is an incredible restaurant providing a well matured dining experience. Overall Rating: 8/10

Tucked away inside a larger wine estate surrounded by a golf course and local community homes is the Kleine Zalze Winery, which also includes the restaurant I ate at for lunch that day, Terroir. Listed as one of the top 50 restaurants to eat at in the Western Cape, I was on a wine tour with Stephen Flesch of Gourmet Wine Tours of South Africa, and as part of our itinerary, Terroir was included as part of the lunch and The Tasting room at Le Quartier Français for dinner. It was a warmer day away from the fresh breezes of Cape Town at the start of summer. I had already been to several wineries, and Terroir was a good break, before the tastings started again.I decided on a three course quick lunch menu since I was on a wine tour and was only allotted one hour for lunch so that we could make are way to the next set of wineries for the day. As we were seated, a large chalk board was presented to use resting on an easel, the same type of experience from Constantia Uitsig La Colombe Restaurant that I had eaten at the other day. The service was very basic, with not a lot of attention to detail. The gentleman who was my guide for the wine tour had to flag someone down to refill his beverage more than once during the meal, and to me that shows a lack of interest in your client from the service standpoint. All in all, not a bad place to have lunch, even though service was not the best. I would compare Terroir to TheZink Kitchen + Bar restaurant in Denver, Colorado and Mr. Todiwala’s Kitchen, London. To read the full review visit the Wine, Dine, and Play blog under Terroir, blog archives January 2014.
