We normally drink very nice coffee at Basic Bistro, but this is the first time that we have had supper at this quaint little restaurant. The restaurant was very busy and we were lucky to get the only available table in the restaurant. The service was fast and efficient and the food was delicious. I had curry and my husband had a burger. My husband would have preferred normal fried chips, but otherwise, there were no complaints. The atmosphere is also very special. Definitely a place to visit again.

Atmosphere 100%. Service 100%. Food 100%. Just lost points because chef has a serious fascination with Balsamic Reduction - to the point that it ruins the rest of the meal. Spoils the meal by making it all too sweet and sticky. Had puddles of the stuff on my plate - could have shared with the rest of the people seated. Make sure you ask for no balsamic, else you going to get your food drowning in it. Not ideal....

Very casual and relaxed atmosphere. I had dinner on my own and sat outside. I was welcomed warmly. The menu is very casual with burgers,pasta and curry. It is very reasonable priced. It is my second visit here and was not disappointed.

As a home barista and coffee connoisseur, I ended up at these guys by chance.Pleasantly surprised... what a great cosy little spot, with great coffee, friendly staff and clean facilities. Parking is a problem - this is town centre, but well worth a visit!

Cosy little restaurant with delicious curries and excellent coffee. Definitely reccomend the chicken curry. It is advisable to book as it is a small restaurant with limited seating.

Basic Bistro is one of my favourite places in Stellenbosch. It has great food, great coffee, and the music is always tastefully chosen. The venue has a great atmosphere and a homey feeling. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I keep coming back to this place.

BIZARRE - WORST meal that I have in South Africa in 20 days, by far. Sirloin steak was like a hard foam. Stuffed fries??????? look this picture. OMG!!!

Not a great option for vegans.My partner ordered the Avo Power Breakfast and they didnt include the rocket or mushrooms (it was basically just avocado on one slice of toast).I ordered the Game Changer Breakfast which was okay (nothing special) but to make things worse it was served with Danish Feta (which I feel is unacceptable when ordering off the vegan menu)I wouldnt recommend this as a vegan friendly place to eat.

I had such a great experience here, food was amazing , employees were polite and funny. You pay for what you get here, great place. The food took a little long but not shockingly long, they were busy. Anyways love this place, highly recommend the wraps 👌🏻. Oh and they have great music playlist which is available on spotify, how cool 😎.

Basic Bistro is a Stellenbosch institution that has stood the test of time. The coffee was steaming hot and can come in a big mug if you ask nicely. I had the a delicious poached egg (soft-cooked to perfection) with salmon and mashed avo on health toast. It really hit the spot. Our waitron provided timely service, but lacked knowledge on some of the menu items. I would certainly eat here again.

25 Apr 2021:Sorry to say, but deeply disappointed.Stunning location, nice ambience and with all tables loaded, it drew us in. The friendly staff and tentative owner probably cannot be to blame, but he food was just not on par for such a competitive market.The stir fry that lacked proper seasoning and visual appeal. One would at least suspect a ginger or soy undertone in a stirfry. There was a hint of garlic though. No sign of chillie either despite the warning, so we ordered extra. Cabbage tends to make everything bitter when it has been sitting for a while. Chicken was tender, yet bitter. Would hate to think it was prepped earlier and reheated on request and topped with fresh coriander, but it was the distinct impression I got. The fact that the rice noodles were a dark colour as the red cabbage seemingly leached out hints at my suspicion being correct. Everything presented as a dark brown blob, except for the coriander. It was fresh. It was green, but when a coriander lover is overwhelmed with the amount it is sure to be overbearing and it was. Again struck me as added last minute to a reheated meal. The torture tunnel test is when a student leaves half a meal...The Santorini chicken fillet burger also lacked seasoning. With an overcooked fillet the tasty tsatziki sauce did help. The bacon was dry and chewy, but when a cut is used with almost no fat, it comes with a risk. Now the wafer chips was a failed attempt at a homemade potato crisp. Soggy and chewy as if it was prepped earlier too and sat out drawing moisture. If you want to emulate a crisp, get out a mandolin, sluce it even and fry at 180°C for 90- 120sec. If you are going for a kettle style crisp, go 170°C for approx 7-8min.For the rest of the menu, we were both confused by what cooking style was punted here: A Mediterranean soup with coconut and pineapple...never new the Med to produce these fruits / An Italian dish using a tortilla.Were these omens perhaps?I guess both of us drew the short straw tonight.Non è tutto oro quello che lucccica...🤣26 Apr 2021: Great to see such a prompt response from Rico!

Lively spot for dinner with a more student crowd. Food is good, but some dishes were a bit heavy (cheese sauces) and the menu lacked decent vegetarian options. Wine was good and service was excellent. Overall we enjoyed it.
