Where should I even start... We ordered - that was followed several minutes later by Sorry, we havent got any calamari tubes. But we can try and grill you some calamari strips (that we politely agreed to). The grilled strips were terribly chewy. The waiter came back a few minutes later to inform us that they didnt have the chorizo for the Calamari Tubes and Chorizo dish ... so three dishes ordered.... and 0/3 done the way it was advertised on the menu. Now the third patron had to order something else completely - So what to order now?! Because all the platters include the calamari tubes ... not available (the mentioned squid heads on the platter was a no-show as well) ENOUGH SAID. Avoid this restaurant - disappointment seems to be guaranteed.

We went to John Dorys for supper because we were really feeling for seafood and wow what a waste of money🤢 I ordered the hake thermidor, the fish was soggy and the prawns and muscles tasted old, the savoury rice was hard as if the rice was left out all day. My boyfriend ordered the surf and turf, the steak was done terribly. The only thing that was decent was the sushi. Staff are nice but you guys really need to improve on your food. Ive had better food at canteens.

Our first visit to a John Dorys.On arrival, greeted by a friendly trainee who was helpful in finding us good seating.Saw the hake special the night before in passing, noticed the special on Flyingfish as well.This was it, right time and place.Between two waiters, they could not decide which Flyingfish flavours were in stock. Ended up, only 1 Apple Flyingfish was available, no others at all. Very disappointed.Reverted to cider in the end.Was not long and a particularly large group of dinners were seated nearby with several very loud and outspoken ladies, we had to move otherwise we would not be able to hold a conversation.We moved to a quieter area, fortunately sufficient seating was available.Noticed a media play area for youngsters, did not see anyone there.Ordered sushi for starters and the hake specials.The sushi was particularly well made with a little bite to it, fantastic.The hake and chip portions were fair and well grilled and fried (had both). No bones either.Our waiter was a tad scarce, had to look for him to place another order of ciders.Right at the end, the manager stopped over and asked how was our experience with John Dorys. He was apologetic, but that was all he could do.PS-the ciders were cold :-)

If I could do half a star I would. Best part of my experience today was my wine. Had meerkat burrow merlot, nice wine. Food sucks, service even worse. After being in the restaurant for a few minutes we decide were not eat the food based on what was being served to other patrons. Ended up eating the worst sushi ever. No presentation and the waitress didnt care to write our order down. We order 2 platters only one came. When we asked for the second, she took sushi off the belt to make our platter which was in any case not what we ordered. Lets rewind back to drinks. The mojito lol!!!! Lemonade with some mint leaves would have been a better menu description for their version of the drink. Attached is a pic of the kiddies pizza. My kid loves any kind of pizza but refused to eat more than 2 slices here, so tried a piece. Bad bad bad!!!! Wont visit here again. No one was friendly and the manager was not visible once during our hour long visit!

We were here on New Years Day and our experience was really terrible. They were short of staff and it seemed like the Sushi guy and our waitress Mari were the only two people doing any work. My girlfriend even had to fetch her sushi at the sushi bar herself after waiting for more than an hour and I already finished my meal by then. It wasnt even busy. And wven though the other waiters saw my empty plate as they walked passed they didnt make the effort to clean up the table. Very nad experience.

Good morningVisited john dorys somerset mall last night for Dinner, there is a large amount of choice on the menu, really something for everyone, plus a good wine list with knowledgeable staff who are not afraid to make a recommendation. The waitress was really patient as we were chatting our way through the menu but we were not rushed in any way. When the food arrived the manager very polite visit the table to confirm if all the orders was correct, we all ate something different and all were very happy with what we had. Portions are also generous. We were asked that everything was OK with our food and our wine for that matter, but not intrusive in the least. All in all, a lovely evening, would definitely visit again

We had breakfast this past Saturday morning at Somerset Mall and for the first time after lockdown, i was really looking forward to visit my favorite breakfast place.I was so disappointed in the whole experience. The very young and inexperienced manageress had her hands full with the staff. The restaurant was not very busy and we waited so long for our order.The extras we ordered (because portions got very small) came in drips and drabs. Between the manageress and waiter we waited very long for refill coffees. The manageress just made excuses about staff being lazy, but i could see she couldnt manage them.I really hope John Dorys will perk up again. You need happy customers and we look forward to great service and food.

A bit disappointed. Expected more from this place. Was excited to eat JDs for the first time ever and it was so little. Went to get take aways, upon arrival we asked how big the hake is so that we would know if we should get a single or double, it was said that its relatively big, wow when we opened it, the hake was about 18cm long and thin with average 5 chips in each box. I decided to have salmon fashion sandwiches, I asked the guy whats the price and how many are in a portion... He said it was R54 per portion and that theres 4, so I figured okay 2 portions will be enough for me. When I opened it, there were 4 pieces, I immediately phoned them and asked them how many is in a portion and the guy said 2. R26.00 for one salmon fashion sandwich,(I didnt even get soya sauce with it) never ever again. So I had 4pieces for dinner which in my mind shouldve been 8. This place is heavy overpriced and the little portions of the rest, disappointing.

Had a lovely lunch with our kids here one afternoon. We definitely went for the Sushi and we were not disappointed. Not just was the Sushi of the best Ive had but the Sushi Chef was very eager to make sure we had the best Sushi experience. He would look at what kind of Sushi you most favored and then hand you a different plate to try out and his Sushi was just different and more creative than what Ive had before. The waitress at our table provided great service and we left feeling very relaxed and impressed by this cozy version of John Dorys.

Really looked forward to our meal at this venue, being inside a very posh Mall we expected the service and meal to be slightly above average at least. The venue was plastered with bird poo and resident sparrows were flying about hovering over meals. The meal took a while to be served, with one meal coming about 5 minutes before the other. The first meal was tasty but the tacos were soggy. The second meal was greasy tasteless and a bit cold. The avocado pear was rock hard and had no flavour. The waiter was confused over the drinks being served one was a light and the other full flavour so we had to guess what was what. Overall not impressed at all. Staff needs a bit of training but it is the festive season and food could get out slightly quicker than usual.

John Dorys, I would like to compliment you on your breakfast menu. Out of all choices there is in Somerset Mall, I always to to JD for breakfast and especially when JD is my waiter, really a keeper. Management is always friendly and they always go out of their way to make us comfortable. Thank you very much for outstanding service!!!

Excellent service.

The service here is absolutely atrocious. When the food finally arrived, no forks. Then no toast. When the toast came the food was long time cold. No waiter was really prepared to help. Manager shrugged it all off and left us hanging. My honest opinion....dont waste your time coming here. Waste of money and time.. worst experience in a restaurant in along time.

Pathetic service. Waiting for our drinks for 20min with only 3 tables in the place. When asked for my water the waitress told me that she was not our waiter. Well she was the only face we saw the whole time. How were we suppose to know. Maybe the managers must be on the floor during lunch time instead om having meetings at the table. Or Calamari was as tough as the rubber ball we purchased at the gamecentre. Our Sushi order came 15 min after the food. Please guys. Up your game.....

Loved everything, no long queues

I would love to rate you 4stars or even 5. But you have a few short comings that can easily change. You are situated in a beautiful section in the mall and your setup is lovely. Your meals, however is not as good as it can be. And your service needs to be a little more effective. I have given you a few visits and I feel you need to focus on restoring the quality of your name as John Dorys. I would love to recommend this branch to my family and friends as soon as this happens😇.

Had a VERY disappointing experience at John Dory at Somerset West Mall. Fish Cakes had crab meat in them and no ingredients listed on menu (as a warning to those with shell fish issues). Tomato/onion salsa was not fresh (bitter taste of being more than day old). Main meal was served COLD after waiting and waiting and waiting nearly an hour for it ... fish tacos - tacos were soggy (soaked up any juices and sauce), purple sauce (supposedly chipotle) was ghastly, even the chips were cold ... R290 down the tubes ... the only point of light was the very good service of the manager who was very apologetic and understanding (28/8/19)

John Dory’s is one of our go-to places for amazing sushi! I highly recommend the Tuna Crunch Rolls and the Rainbow Warrior Platter. You can’t go wrong with those! :)

The food was horrible... The calamari and fish seemed to be fried in old dirty oil.. The lemon butter sauce was lumpy and tasted off... And the prawn was dryer than the desert... If it wasnt for the very nice waiter I would rate this place 0 out of 10 food was absolutely horrible... Definitely wont be going there again.

Constant change of staff makes one wonder what is going on. Food acceptable except when there is a change in presentation (sauce) the manager prefers to argue with customer rather than ask the kitchen staff why presentation differs. So young and no idea of customer service

Ive been a loyal John Dorys patron since the first Cape Town franchise opened in Canal Walk in 2005... Ive shared in all their changes over the years but never did I think this day would come. I actually regret taking my family for supper at the Somerset West branch tonight. I was so disappointed with the delayed service and what made it worst was the extremely poor quality of the food... It was as though the chefs just started training or learning how to cook and served their experiments to us. The rice was so salty, the steak, fish and other seafood was so over cook (scorched/hard) that we were not able to pleasently or comfortably enjoy our supper. In fact we could not even come close to finishing... I shared my disappointment with the manager, paid my bill and left... I really do not think I will return... 👎🏼

Been here a few times, every time has been great experience regarding food and service.

We had such a great lunch on Saturday. My BFF and I had a girls day and went to Jonh Dorys. I had the Queen Prawns Special and my BFF a Steak Special anf everything was made to perfection.. Have to say thanks to Nicole our waitress for excellent service and the friendly manager Rynhardt.. We will do this again...

Decent sushi with interesting variety. I enjoyed their sriracha mayo and different takes on classic sushi. They have a half price sushi special as well, so well worth a visit.

I personally didnt enjoy my experience here. I like Maki, but paying R38 for 3 small pieces is simply too much. Even when attending for the Wednesday 2 for the price of 1 sushi special, R38 for 6 pieces is still a brutal rip off.
