Terrible service with regards to an emergency with our very sick two year old. No solution to her sickness and turned away to treat her at home. After a thorough examination by our paediatrician this morning she has put our daughter on an anti biotic. Quick to bill us R1500. Will not be using this hospital going forward.

Emergency section in shambles. Waited over an hour and a half in the cold for ill daughter to receive attention. Processing done in a tented area in the car park. Only one surly and singularly nasty nurse processing patients. Displayed a total lack of nursing empathy or professionalism. Zero communication skills. Weeks later received a bill for R200 odd from Netcare as not medical aid covered which could have been presented to me whilst waiting on site for hours doing nothing. Paid immediately but received a nasty final demand from Thandile Tshabalala a mere 2 days after receiving the bill which had already been paid anyway. Not only are we treated like livestock but also like criminals. Asked for but still awaiting that elusive apology. Disgraceful.

I was recently in ICU and surgical 2 where I cannot describe the level of bad and cruel nursing ever. I can think of 2 sisters who were good and kind. 1 male nurse from an agency. They stick up for each other and if they know you have spoken to the Dr seeing you it gets worse. My phone that was supposedly locked up while I was in ICU was used by one of the sisters and now is registered in her name. The nursing and attitude was the worst I have ever seen. So many lines were crossed. If it was not for all the wonderful Dr who cared for me. This would have definitely been taken further.

Keeping in mind how hard hit this hospital was by covid and the level of sacrifice they have made to do their job, I dont know how they keep themselves together. Hospital management and shareholders should really look at how to repay them for the work they have done. Nurses do a good job. But like all of us they may struggle to understand what the patient is go through and why they need help in certain circumstances. Food was served well but may not be everyones taste. The entrance may need cleaning as there is a lot of traffic there. Equipment seems in good working order.

Covid test done, male nurse refused to let me in with my daughter saying she is not a minor... minor is now up to 10 years old only.. insisting i go have coffee or to the spar or MacDonalds leaving my sick child alone.. made me really doubt his intentions. Removed his mask to speak to us !!None of the nurses were professional enough to inform me as to whats going on, if they seen to her or any meds administered until i called to check up on her and complained. Very very disappointed.. poor unprofessional nurses and service .. left the hospital 5 hours later.Service was worse than a public hospital

Went there today first to the x-ray ( for childs one ear) at the centre, after waiting for a while they send me to do the x-rays at the hospital instead...no problem. almost 2 hours later I am charged for both ears x-rayed ( saying both had to be done) the nurse ( from the centre) was so rude as she came to abruptly tell me that she distinctively told me that the price is ... per ear, yet the Dr referral asked for one ear so I also budgeted for one ear as well. Now I see the bill that on top of double ear charges, I am also charged for an apron, long sleeve gown, disposable gloves, sleeve protector and mask. The only thing they gave me was the mask which they insisted at the door that I take even though we were wearing our own, They failed to mention that we were being charged for these forced masks ... I dont mind paying for the mask but why am I charged for things(PPE) that were used by the staff??????? Utterly disappointed. Half a star if I could.

I arrived at Umhlanga Hospital at 3:35 am with my 11 year old son. He was weak from vomiting and diarrhea when we got off the car there was nurse by name of Dion/ Deon “ that is what the security guard said her name was” She saw my son was struggling to walk as I was helping she just looked at us like we were pieces of trash as we got close to her she walked away. Without assisting me or getting a wheel chair.I called out to a security lady as she was walking towards the parking lot for help, she ra to fetch the wheel chair for my son.The nurses don’t care at all. The lady that was assisting us, had an attitude, she seem disinterested and kept speaking Zulu to us. Yes, we black but not all black people are Zulu. Zulu is not an official language for all black people. I explained to her that my son is not Zulu as she could tell by our surname and she continued speaking to him in Zulu, I had to translate for her.Why would you employ people who are not fluent in English? After that ordeal we have to wait for the Doctor for a while. I honestly hated every minute of being in that hospital. The emergency unit nursing staff are a disgrace. Something has to be done. The only good thing I can say is the admission staff they are understanding and professional they showed me they cared. The nurses you could see, they are just there because it was probably an easy job to get but have no heart for people or no calling to help humanity.I live less 5 min away from this hospital but to be honest next I’ll rather drive long distance to another hospital. Umhlanga Hospital gives same care as government hospital.I wish top management will read these reviews and take necessary steps to correct the way the hospital is being run, retrain staff, hire high quality nurses and get rid of rotten staff.

Poor bedside manner from the Doctor on duty on Christmas day. Disappointing to know that this is the service I got for my wife at the Emergency ward from a health care professional... The fact that I had to tell him to check her again after his examination is completely poor. Further more I had to ask twice who he was as he didnt have the decency to introduce himself properly. The upside is the nurse was great and she should have been the doctor on duty as she did more than the man who lost his tongue. You wont be seeing me anytime soon!!!

Nobody seems to care what happens to the patients, I have NEVER been so frustrated in my life.Worst hospital I have ever seen.My husband was admitted with emergency and left bleeding heavily for 18 hours straight because it was a Sunday, even tough the trauma doctor said he needed emergency surgery because of the very high chance for infection, nothing was done and surgery only took place on Tuesday (2 days later than how it should have been!!!!) This prolonged his hospital stay considerably and increased healing time and the amount of damage to his body. The amount of fear, stress, anger and anxiety I have felt during his admission was out of this world and we could only seem to receive some help after shouting, crying and DEMANDING changes in treatment absolutely SHOCKING.People who don’t want to do emergency surgeries because it’s weekend should never become doctors !!!!!!If you don’t want to see your loved ones in pain and without appropriate treatment for days, go to another hospital.

On one occasion when the nurse acknowledged her she insisted that she speaks louder so that she does not have to wake up from her comfortable chair. 25 weeks pregnant, rushed to the hospital because i had some watery discharge and was worried it could be amniotic fluid. Firstly my vitals where checked ( glucose, blood pressure and urine dipstick) then I was put onto a bed waiting for the doctor. At that point I am asked if I am on medical aid and I say no. I am then asked to pay R1500 right there on that bed... I still had not been seen by a doctor, didnt know if my baby was fine. I brooke down as I was swiping my card on that bed asking to at least be visited and reassured all was good with my baby. Clearly I didnt win! After that the doctor comes and ask routine questions and goes to speak to the gyne who hasnt come to see me. She comes back saying the gyne advised me to be admitted because this could be a sign of early labour and cost is R30000 per night. I am not a nurse or else but I thought how could the gyne make such statement without even seeing me, doing a ultrasound to verify if my baby was fine? checking for holes in the uterus, and checking the amount of fluid in it? I refused to be admitted which seemed to piss off the staff who assisted me. I signed the refusal of treatment statement and got a referral letter from the doctor to be treated in a public hospital. Paid another R500 for the doctor consultation( basically to answer her questions about my general health conditions) and went privately to the public hospital where I got all the care I expected to have ( blood test, ultrasound etc...). I am safely home now and my baby is doing great kicking as usual. No drips and no admission needed, the discharge wasnt amniotic fluid but caused by high levels of estrogen and quite common in the second trimester of pregnancy. What a disappointment for this hospital. But God is good all the time.
