It is always amazing coming here. All the lifeguards I came across were so lazy. Looking as if they were forced to come to work. 😄 but besides. Its nice here.

It was a very nice place, it was also big, The only problem is that the we stood for 30 minutes out side before we could go in but I think this is the right place to take your family ❤️❤️

We had a great day today, 16 September 2021,even though the picture quality is too low but we really enjoyed as a family. The zoo is so big and too beautiful with picnics spots, braai stands and many more; besides all of that I just love the fact that its a quiet place👌

It was extremely full and took a long time to get inside. I recommend buying tickets online. Everything else went well.

Cages empty, not the same awesome zoo it was pre covid, seems something has changed.

In the middle of the city, you can watch lions, tigers, leopards and cheetahs being fed. Absolutely awesome experience. I suggest you hire a golf cart, place is massive and tiring.

Great experience ,took my 5year old since ot was her birthday she loved it as we explored the Zoo and got to see most but not all the Animals . We also had Picnic which was really awesome nice environment to sit and relax with family and friends

It was wonderful becuase it was my daughters first experience at the zoo, however, I could not get anything to eat or drink, and many of the facilities and exhibits were closed. Staff were very friendly and I can only imagine the lockdowns have hit them hard. Support them, but bring snacks and drinks.

Such a stunning place with breathtaking scenery, and lots of animals to see. I just wish the seals (amongst other animals) were living in better conditions and that the river under the bridge wasnt so polluted 🥺

Quite disappointed by the lack of attraction here. The grounds have so much potential and the natural flora is absolutely stunning but the amount of habitats or enclosures that were empty or closed as just not good enough to pay full price.A lot of the enclosures are under maintained and there were dangerous spiders near and around where children could touch in countless locations.Appreciate that the zoo is open, letting people in and maintaining care of the animals but it was an overall underwhelming experience for something with so much potential.Parking and entrance situation is not ideal.Still got some decent pics and got to see some good stuff.

The zoo looks old. Buildings needs revamp. Some animals are not there. Some toilets dnt work.. it generally looks yesterday to be called the national zoo.Not all was bad. I appreciate that there are water taps and trash cans everywhere. The gardens are well kept.

I was here today with a friend, and oh wow... I had a great time and an educative and memorable experience for my moneys worth.There are different entry fees for different categories of customers (babies, children, adults, students, teachers and students in a group, etc).The officials are nice. And, the environment is very neat and each section organized.Its a lovely place to vibe with family, friends and even strangers, take loads of pictures, see intriguing animals, feel the nature and exit feeling satisfied!

Its best to get there early so you can get through the entire zoo before the Pretoria heat really hits.The best zoo on this side of the world and definitely worth the R110 for adults.Pack a picnic basket and enjoy a great day out.

An amazing outing for the family where you can spend the entire day at the 80 hectare zoo. Highly recommend to take your picnic basket and get there early in the morning to enjoy a full day and embrace yourself with the wild life and the many picnic spots within the Zoological and Botanical Gardens. Hiring a golf cart is also recommend but the zoo management does not have an efficient hiring process and putting your name on the waiting list tends to make the zoo visitors very frustrated. Hence this put you in a situation of sometimes waiting up to two hours or even more to hire a golf cart is the zoo is busy more especially on weekends or if you get there around midday. Social distancing among frustrated patrons in the waiting line for the golf cart is a concern.Overall a good family destination for making memories which is recommended.

Its good place to bring the kids if theyve never been to the zoo, but alot of animals werent on display. And just a extra note...the penguins really didnt look well kept after. I went there on a very hot day and the only form of heat repellent the penguins had was a bit of shade and a ceiling fan. It was honestly sad to see.

The animals were in great condition, well fed looked like they were well cared for. The facilities on the other hand needs a refresh, signage faded, glass in some enclosures cracked or shattered and a few other odds and ends. Also looks like it just needs a good cleanup crew to blitz the place. Overall a good day out.

Best time to go there is early before they open

My first time ever viisiting the Pretoria Zoo , and there were sooo much i could start comparing to the Johannesburg ZooDue to the zoo being so big, there were a much bigger variety of Animals to see such as - Gorillas , Camels and a few others which the Johanesburg zoo cannot cater for due to space.I was not happy with the Pretoria Zoo Aquarium it was way too dark to see any fish at all and most of the people inside had to walk around with their mobile flash lights to look into the tanks.We had to wait almost 2 hrs for a Go Cart, so we ended up exploring the zoo by foot it was not as hectic as people make it to seem, slow strolls are lovely and enjoyable. The entire zoo we completed in 4 hrs 🌺 we also sat to have our small picnic so i would definitely choose to walk around for the next time again❤The ONLY Downside to the Pretoria Zoo and JHB zoo is their TOILET FACILITIESPLEASE DO PAY ATTENTION TO HYGIENE ,AS WE WALKED PASS EACH TOILET FACILITY ..NO SOAP , ALL TOILETS CLOGGED.That was ridiculous! I would love if there was attention paid to hygiene for men and womenBut in general we had a lovely day ...

The zoo is still a wonderful family outing ❤. One should prepare to que up for the go cart to explore the rest of the zoo. The cable was not working, I am not sure if is because of covid-19 regulations.

It is still a reasonably fun outing but the enclosures have definitely seen better days, they are unkept. The animals are still in good physical condition but many of the water features in the enclosures are not working, cable car wasnt working, many of the kiosks were closed, the river was full of litter, it was a bit sad to see how much it has deteriorated 😥And they do silly things like print whole folders of photos at R220 and R300+, so few people take it due to the cost, they should let you pick what you want and only print that, it would definitely save some trees and wont be such a waste, maybe photos would be cheaper and more people would actually buy them. Even little t/shirts, R200 for a size 1-2, its a bit crazy, we earn Rands, not dollars or pounds..

Great place for an outing, but has seriously diminished since I was there as a kid 10 years ago. Investing in the zoo and showing support will help preserve what little is left.

The line is very long and crowded, it is best to get there early and not on a busy day. It is an amazing place once you have entered

At this time (September 2021) rather stay away. Mixed answers received to the question of Where are the animals? Should you be in need of a good walk or a nice leisurely golf car tour then yes, the golf cars are superb ( limited to 10km/h) but sells out quickly.

I enjoyed the visit, but due covid 19 not all units in the area are functional, like Cableway ,trains for kids and restaurants.

A most amazing variety of animals to see and observe. It really was an extraordinary experience.Side note: I felt that some animals were in too small of an environment...and then other, small animals, maybe had an unnecessarily large space.Just my opinion.I do understand that there may be a bigger picture and that I just dont know what it is.It was my first time seeing cheetahs that up close and personal, I just couldnt see where their running space was. In my mind cheetahs need space to run.Many things were closed due to Covid.The animals looked healthy.I could have watched the mountain goats jump from rock to rock all day xI do recommend it as a must see if youre ever in the area 👍

Had thee most amazing time here!! The zoo is quite huge which makes it so interesting with beautiful trees and beautiful sounds of water! I genuinely love nature so I had epic time!

I dont know maybe its the winter season but the place is a mess looks like no one tak care of the dry leaves down most of the trees are dying but I had a wonderful time.

Refreshing place... Lots of animals to watch, couldnt even go through the whole Zoo.

Would have given 5 stars but theres a few concerns to address.There are many activities to do within the zoo which ofcourse requires money, however only cash is accepting. For EVERYTHING. Which would not have been a problem had there been any ATMS on the premise, but nothing. Hiring of golf cart was not possible therefore had to spend the whole day on foot getting from one place to another.It is also extremely costly. Restaurants allow for swiping but be prepared to pay double the amount for everything.Food was also not up to standard. Very dry and bland.The general upkeep of the zoo can also be improved. Toilets were not in good condition. Grass alongside the walking trail can be kept in better condition. It was like walking/hiking through a bush trail.Needless to say, the animals look well fed and taken after.

Some good upgradings done! But it seems animals are getting smaller in numbers. No big cats to be seen except the tiger. Interesting is the consuming of alcohol on the premises, especially with alot of children all around the premises. Hope to see improvement with the next visit.

Seeing all the animals was fantastic but the food was gruesome. The menu was limited. I ordered a chicken burger and Russian and chips. I should have noticed something was off by how quick the meal came.The potatoes were not well done, the chicken patty looked like a chicken hip They just threw inside a dry bun with tomato and sauces..... so bring your own lunch ! But the park is beautiful

We had a fun filled day at the zoo.Lots to see and beautiful to wander around looking at all the animals.It would be awesome to have a bigger variety on the food menus and at the food kiosks dotted around the zoo. Even a toasted cheese would have been yummy.An overall pleasant experience

Great Zoo. Opened in 1899. Features a large amount of animals. COVID has hit the Zoo hard. You can see that they are rather spending on caring for the animals than small maintenance. Please support the Zoo so that they can overcome this challenge and go forward….

It’s a massive zoo with lots to see. I’d recommend that you go early in the morning or late in the afternoon because it gets really hot during the day(especially in summer).. the animals will hide away from the heat.

All animals were either sleeping or unavailable. Good place to spend with family but was disappointed that my kids couldnt really see the animals.

I was pleasantly surprised by this Zoo. The zoo grounds are massive and beautiful. Accessible to those with wheelchairs. The animals are in very good condition and in general the zoo is in a very good, clean condition. The variety of animals is great. The only downside is that they dont tell you beforehand that certain enclosures of empty. Be aware that there are no longer koala bears at the zoo and although advertised they dont give pensioners discounts. Other than that its a great place to spend the day. Plan for a good 5 hours. Its a lot of walking so if you struggle to walk. Hire a golf cart, its well worth the money.

This place is amazing. Got to see the Big 5.I used the electric cart as opposed to walking around the zoo. Best choice as the zoo is very big, it took me 2 hours which could have been almost doubled on foot.Totally worth seeing and spending the day at.

We didnt see much Animals which was Disappointing And a elephant with belly no water Which was sad to see... There was only one elephant who looked so lonely.... There was no clean water for the animals which was very sad to see cause it was a very hot day... The animals didnt look happy And there environment wasnt very clean.... Sad to see animals like that they didnt looked very well looked after

They need to add more animals especially elephants, leopards and hyenas. The were activities that used to take place but they are no longer there. The zoo is worst position now compared to 20 years ago.

The Zoo is a very fun place for a family outing, entrance is reasonable and u can hire go_carts at R100 per hour, lots of animals to see. I found the family photos to be expensive though

Shooo our Zoological Gardens has dilapidated, its heartbreaking 💔 to see it in that state 😢. How hard could it be to maintain such a place! Im giving them 2 stars because I could at least see a couple of lions and a tiger.

Its trying to keep up with modern times, keeping animals that look sad all the time , in my opinion just wrong. They hand you a photocopy map thats not clear. I dont like zoos ,but had to go as I had visitors.

It is clean, well maintained and there are a lot of animals to see.Negative for us were not a lot of the shops were open or eating facilities. Staff are a little grumpy, maybe it was the heat.Overall great visit.

I was last at PTA zoo 5 years ago.I was incredibly disappointed to see the state it is currently in😔Cable car not working, plenty enclosures empty, lions placed in a steep enclosure at the top where there is so many larger other enclosures on flat ground.Condition of water, the, Apies River completely and utterly disgusting, filled with litter, smelling of sewerage stained with a blue hue. Water holes green! Why?The animals seemed in good condition besides the penguins! The bird attraction over the bridge is no more. I understand there may be under funding for maintenance and perhaps worsened due to covid. However if it is a grim future ahead, then rather close it down. Even the lovely restaurant has closed. I did not have a good time at all! I see the same old elephant 🐘, over all the years still does not have a watering hole to bask in on a very hot day. Perhaps I am uninformed but it is definitely not what it used to be.

Nice family friendly environment. Very spacious it was well kept has a variety of animals. Cable way was not working. Love their golf carts and the mini cars for the kids.

Absolutely a rip off...30% cages empty and those that have animals poorly maintained.Almost no stores open, and the ones that are open have no stock what a waste of money.Rather take drive to hartbeespoort even that is better so disappointing it is a complete rip off.

Kids enjoyed it. Crowds are not controlled though in the aquarium, were are still in the pendemic. But lovely day.

Pretoria Zoo, has definitely forgot the purpose of a zoo. This being to enjoy nature and the animals, however this zoo has been turned into a party venue therefore defeating the purpose of wanting to escape the cities noise. Majority of the animal holding cages were empty and the upkeep of the environment in terms of over grown grass is too much. PTA zoo is meant to be a bigger and better zoo in terms of experience compared to JHB zoo but they have lost the understanding of what a zoo is meant to be. There is alcohol sold on site and cloud music (events) and braais held at the place as if it is a lake. I am very disappointed in the Zoos management.

Very good experience. Lots of animals. Looks like they are kept in good conditions. Quite clean. Some enclosures and signage looks a little tired and in need of painting and upgrading here and there. Must see beautiful bird sanctuary. Must see lion and tiger enclosures. Very large park so I advise making use of the golf cart to get around. Well worth whatever the cost of the cart is. Overall, great day out for families.
