First stop for restaurant week. We surprisingly had the entire restaurant to ourselves for most of supper. This is in stark contrast to their packed Melville days. What is still the same is their excellent food: contemporary take on Asian dishes whilst remaining faithful to flavor. Generous portions. Beautiful plating. Im glad theyve moved closer to us.

Food was amazing. Went for a quiet Saturday lunch and was not disappointed. Had the Dan Dan Noodles and the Ginger Scallion Noodles and could easily have had 2 helpings.Service was great, fast enough that we didnt starve, but not over attentive, which would have ruined the mood.Will definitely be going back again.

We loved the food. We loved the different style of Asian food which we dont get in our area. The ceviche trout tacos were delicious and out of this world.

This place was such a disappointment. Service was nice, ambiance was lovely, but the food was... wow. The word horrible comes to mind. Everything tasted like it had been previously frozen. Out of our almost r700 tab (for two people) nothing tasted like it was made fresh or authentic for that matter. I would recommend not wasting your time or money. Absolutely not worth it.

One of my favourite eateries in Joburg. Used to visit the Melville branch but first time at the new location in Illovo. Food was still as good as I remember. The sashimi tacos and dokbokki always hit the spot. Definitely try these. Service was a bit slow when I went, but good meal. Had the prawn dumplings in Tom Yum, was spicy but good. The hibiscus panna cotta dessert was also delicious. Still a favourite.

Friendly service and really tasty food. Even if youre not a big Asian fusion cuisine fan Id still give it a try. Try get a seat overlooking Rustenburg Rd so you can watch the cars go by.

The food is tasty but portions are a bit small so you would ideally order two meals at once. Conveniently located in the heart of Melville and theres ample parking as well.

A unique little restaurant with an eclectic Asian inspired menu. A little pricey for what you get, but the kitchen is super fast, and the drinks are lovely.

Loved it. But they changed the menu completely from the firat and second time I went there but kept the meal names the same? So my first meal was amazing but my sisters was tasty second time I went there I got what she did and it was some deconstructed nonsense nothing like it was before. But also its a great place with amazing food. Just expect the unexpected. Exotic drinks are amazing even if they sound weird but definitely try them.Overall experience was great both times. Ill be returning for more unexpected surprises!

Went for luncheon there in restaurant week. I was very delighted with the food. The location is not what you will expect from such excotic food flavours.For starters I had the scallion pancakes which was a bit dull but had a very interesting texture. On the side I had Thai deep fried corn fritters. Wow. The apple sauce gave a sweet taste to it but then a zesty zing takes hold of your tongue and the flavour just explode in your mouth.For main I order thick ginger scallion Ramen noodles with extra fried chicken. The portions are huge so come hunger and I had to ask for a doggie bag. The flavours flowed from sweet to salty to spicy and back to sweet and it created a perfect flavour combinations.PS note they are very pricey and you must add dishes on

Very tasty authentic Food. Loves the ginger noodles and Korean Chicken.

The GEFC has lost its great. 4 out of 5 dishes last night were disappointing. The edemame and nori dish was simple and perfect as always. The Szechuan dumpling in broth was ok, but the broth had no depth of flavor and was crying out for palm sugar and lime to balance it. The chicken steamed bun had gristle as well as in the chicken and rice dish with dark end meat bits and cartilage that were wholly unpalatable. The sashimi noodle bowl was underwhelming and came to the table with 2 ingredients missing. Is no-one tasting in the kitchen anymore? I believe there has been a management change - perhaps this was the special touch that is now lacking.

Hard to find cosy spot. The food is absolutely impeccable and divine. This place has a quality of food that far exceeds the standards they had in Melville. Did they change chefs? Worth every penny. Definitely would come back. We tried almost every single thing on the menu and nothing disappointed us.

This is a perfectly sized, minimalistic restaurant. I loved that the restaurant isnt too large - allowing for an intimate feel - perfect for date night. Nothing pretentious about the place. Service was quick and efficient.The kitchen is in the open and also minimal. Fascinating to witness because youd never expect such flavorful food to come out of such a small workspace. Cant compliment the food enough! So impressed with the dough of the dumplings. The Vietnamese mussels was also a winner.Only critique I can add is that the directions to the place are not 100% clear on Google maps. Signage for the restaurant is not visible from the road. Restaurant is located in the Bamboo centre. Sufficient parking is available.

Phenomenal restaurant! We tried a little bit of everything. Some highlights:*apple and mint drinking vinegar: I know, it sounds weird but it is so delicious and refreshing*trout ceviche tacos - my husband says thats all he ever wants to eat*vegetable gyoza (potsticker) dumplings - so crisp and flavourful*The granadilla pavlova and the hibiscus panna cotta dessert - simply mind blowing

Food is as mind blowing as ever. This is one of our favorite restaurants, period. But we really, really miss the Melville location. And bring back the amazing chili jam on the smoked trout!

Exceptional food and flavours. Service is great. A favourite of ours but must say we preferred the old venue in Melville, however well be back.

Absolutely mouth-watering food. Restaurant is a little on the tight side, but with the variety of choices on both the food and drinks menu, you soon forget about somebody bumping into your back. I personally loved the lighting, some at our table found it too dark. For those that dont know, like I didnt, the restaurant is based upstairs. It seems that reservations are generally recommended.

Great little spot, always leave satisfied. Shame there arent many more of these places around town. A nice hidden culinary gem, recommend the Leeche Sake and the Korean Wings

Just a quick thing: the venue is above Service Station which is the first restaurant you will see in Rustenburg rd.Service was friendly, knowledgable and considerate. I went there with a friend who is vegan and before taking our order we were asked about dietary requirements.Food was divine, they have a great selection of dishes. Presentation was good, not too flashy.Ambiance was chilled, casual vibe.

Some of the meals are great like the tacos and the dumplings in broth, while others are very underwhelming like the Korean chicken as there is an unusual sweet overpowering flavor. Service is great, however location is definitely not great as it is in the basement of the mall and the decor is not inviting.

Wow wow wow is all I can say! I have not enjoyed a meal like I did here in a long time! Their food is amazing, the vibe is amazing and their service is amazing!! Just wow!! I will definitely be back here!!! Highly recommend the Cauliflower Nuggets!!!

Nowhere else in SA will you get such an amazing mix of eastern food (served tapas style) that tastes this authentic! Yum yum and more yum! I am ready to die every time Ive been there. You have to try their shitake mushroom steamed bun and their lime and ginger cordial. You know what, just try everything!

Lukewarm pre-cooked and reheated dishes I guess? Not sure how else our cauliflower nuggets and chicken wings can be cold in the middle. Upset stomach for myself and my wife, although my son got the trout and seems fine today. Def not worth the hype unless they were just having an off day. Two different friends have said how great this place is I will avoid their recommendations in future!

We really enjoyed our dinner here. They were so accommodating to us with our toddler. The food was excellent and the service was really good. We will be back.

We had excellent dinner here! The scallion pancake was heaven - crispy and tasty. The agedashi tofu was also excellent (best I had) as were the trout tacos. We also had two mains (smoked trout and ginger-scallion noodles) which were super good. Would definitely eat here again.

I cannot stand hot food; however I make an exception for their flavorful dishes. Mmmhmmmhmmm. Been here often and they always have friendly staff and their food is on point.The shop is absolutely adorable but is quite limited in space so we often make sure to book just in case.

Really great food! My favourites are the marinated tofu and dokbokki. Staff are hugely friendly and accommodating - though my only complain is that when you’re a large group the table feels WAY too cluttered.

Really good unusual food for Joburg. A little pricey if you are the hungry type but so worth it. We took the kids which would not be my first choice but they were happy enough. Space is tight though - hopefully they will move to bigger premises. Some of the chairs need cushions though. All in all a really wonderful meal. Personally I loved the cauliflower pops and I would be hard pushed to choose between the coconut milk rice and the kimchi rice.

Ok so not my favourite night out, I have to admit. The restaurant is incredibly noisy and the service was rather mediocre. Food and drinks were good so cant really fault them on that

The Sichuan chicken dumplings are amazing.

Great service, but we found the food fairly average. The Deep Fried Bao with Szechuan Chicken and Picked Cucumber lacked flavor, and there were certainly no discernible traces of Szechuan pepper, which was very disappointing. The Ginger Scallion Noodles were quite good, but the Agedashi Tofu was unmemorable.

Oh. One word. Glorious!!!!!

If you have an appetite for exotic tastes then this is the place for you. It is a very intimate environment and is ideal for small groups and couples. Parking is not ideal so you might want to Uber to the restaurant.

After some very good meals at Great Eastern over the last few years, last nights meal gave me food poisoning! I suspect the salmon tacos but am not sure. Great Eastern is generally focused and professional, but no restaurant can afford to lose focus even for a day. Sure, it can happen - but Im in no hurry to go back there again!

We have been driven to this restaurant thanks to positive reviews online and of course to our passion for eastern flavor foods. I would say that the Great Eastern Food Bar deserves even more compliments than those it already received from its guests! Food was just delicious, you feel like youre eating in some of the bests restaurants of China, Vietnam or Thailand (the only eastern countries we have visited so far). They are able to reproduce, revisitate and even improve lots of traditional dishes with a special taste of interculturalism. The staff is beautiful and absolutely lovely and prices are reasonable. People go there and let yourselves be carried away by emotions.
