Charming location and tasty food.We went for a lunch break in Stellenbosh on a sunny day. The table was perfectly sitting under the grape vine. Being quite hungry we opted for a full chef menu, 7 tapas per person. Each plate had a unique combination of flavours, all very enjoyable. The place is probably very nice also for dinners, we definitely have to go back for an evening culinary experience.
Spek & Bone is a what wonderful restaurant in Stellenbosch. Tucked away off a busy street to a serene courtyard where the magic happens. The service is excellent and the food absolutely delicious. Tasty tapas menu will delight your tastebuds. The restaurant is named after the owners two pets, Spek meaning pig and Bone for their dog. It’s a must when visiting Stellenbosch.
Great food, great service!
Very enjoyable tapas. But... really disappointing wine options. Had a very happy reunion with friends, but Im not sure the next time will be at this venue.
What an absolute gem in Stellenbosch... Or rather, another absolute gem in Stellenbosch, amongst so many others, but still, Spek and Bone stands out!Small plates, to share, a small focused menu with dishes that are packed full of thought (and more flavour), all brought to life with precise execution.Order everything on the menu and share, you wont regret it. The chicken wings and pap chips were my personal favorite.
We had an absolutely wonderful evening at Spek & Bone. I wanted to book something a bit different for dinner with my family and Spek & Bone did not disappoint. We had a great table outside under the vines, all lit with fairy lights and candles which provided a wonderful atmosphere. We ordered almost all the dishes on the menu and pretty much all of them were amazing! We particularly loved the Silverfish and Seafood Curry. The steak was beautiful, tartiflette and gnocchi were amazing too, if a bit rich. Some dishes seemed a tiny bit too salty but this was easily resolved with lots of wine! This restaurant is really something special and different for Stellenbosch, dont miss it. Great service. Not cheap, but worth every cent!
Great food, great experience - chicken and waffles are out of this world... Absolutely recommend it.
I enjoyed the location of this restaurant, tucked away from the busy Drop street. The food was good but I did expect more. It did have more of a take-away feel to it and we did not receive friendly and welcoming service. I was ready to try the food again, but returned to find the menu changed. We drove quite a distance to get to Stellenbosch, but no where on any website do they advertise the change in menu or current menu. I think the communication could improve.
Finesse. Unpretentious. Fresh, flavoursome and textured delight with an excellent wine offering to accompany it. Can’t wait to persuade someone to return with me.They now serve pannekoek breakfast. We took advantage by chance in the rain and it was lekker!!!***Since then I have returned with a vegetarian who does not drink and I can affirm that even with a name like Spek & Bone which my mother could not believe would lead to vegetarian delights there were more than enough options to leave filled with beautiful and tasty food. The courtyard setting is wonderful, and it was so nice to enjoy winter fun in the sun at this spot.
You feel comfortable straight away when walking in. The restaurant is centred around the oldest fruit producing vine in Stellenbosch and its just beautiful. Its hard to decide what was better between the food and the wine. What stood out for us was the homemade milk rolls with the whipped butter - so delicious, the red blend we ordered to accompany our meal and the steak and potato gnocchi was out of this world. The staff are so friendly and very knowledgeable. Be sure to make a reservation when in Stellenbosch!
Was a really great experience at Spek & Bone. The service was very friendly and relaxed which made the night so special. There is a set menu which is perfect for sharing and the food was excellent! One of our favourite restaurants.
Male waitron, started the experience off poorly, with a boorish attitude, didnt make us feel welcome...food was good after young lady took the baton from him, after I refused to accept his arrogant attitude. Things improved dramatically after that, & left the restaurant very statisfied !
Excellent food, friendly staff and a cozy casual setting. Mini culinary experience at an affordable price. Great for a date.
The new menu is great. Excellent value for money.Service was excellent, everyone was friendly. Chefs were spot on.The gnocchi was a stand out, the bread course excellent. Sirloin pastrami is incredible.
Good food...personal attention to detail
Had an amazing experience here this past Saturday. The food, service, wine selection was all phenomenal! Well done!
Great food and great chefs
We had the most amazing meal ever at Spek & Bone! The food is so good I cant even begin to describe it. That gnocci!!! It is to die for.The atmosphere is relaxed and romantic, with plenty of well spaced outdoor seating available under the beautiful grapevines. I felt reassured by the fact that they were very Covid concious.I was particularly impressed by their incredible service. One of the plates on the set menu contained raw fish, and as I started explaining that I cant eat raw fish right now, the waiter immediately ensured me they will cook it for me. It was just nice that they were so thoughtful and brought me my own, seperate cooked plate.Go here for a date night – you definitely wont be disappointed!
So so nice!!
Little gem in Stellenbosch. Try the Gnocchi. But the Pork Belly is just..
Classic setting in historic part of town. Went there for breakfast. Had a delicious modern spin on French toast. Good value for money. Good service and even better coffee. Will visit again soon.
Staff were very well co-ordinated and organised! Definitely a worthwhile visit!
This is amazingIt is a fine dining style sharing restaurant. It is about taste here. Dont expect massive mild means expect moderate explosive tastes.I loved it here. The food is beyond my expectations. Its so simple yet so amazing
Beautiful food with a pleasant burst of unexpected flavors, fantastic wine and surprisingly child friendly. Took a 1½ year out child with us for a Saturday night dinner and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Looking forward to going back.
The entrance photos of the Spek & Bone are very creative. The restaurant has a modern look and feel with a very nice casual outside seating area. The wine list is well rounded with a good selection of wines. Whilst dining here I realized that an order and share culture is encouraged by the staff. The guests are encouraged to try at least two dishes bringing the average price per head to about R200-R250.Our group was told that the cold dishes would come out before the warm dishes. I assume that means that when all the cold dishes are ready they get sent out and then when all the warm dishes come out theyd come out together. The food came out in a complete mix of hot and cold without taking into account of who ordered what. This lead to some guests eating whilst others were watching.I had the beer battered hake. I was somewhat hungry at the time and felt disappointed that all I could taste was salt. I couldnt finish the portion which was not very big.Staff were friendly.
Beautiful place ! And the concept is very nice, a large choice of original tapas. The waiters are very kind and attentive. Thank you for a great evening.
One word...delicious 😋
Food is great, as well as wine selections. Dont be fooled by small portions, 2 or 3 tapas will make you full. Try the cheese melt, its superb and spicy, make sure to ask for some more bread ). Service could be better, though.
Amazing food!
Really enjoyed the evening, great food and excellent service.
Fantastic little spot. Modern, contemporary décor, interesting menu, excellent service. Well definitely be back.
A different take on the usual dining experience, the food philosophy here is based on trying different dishes and sharing it with the people at your table. This place is perfect for a date night.
Wonderful restaurant in Stellenbosch - a bit hidden from the main Street (Dorp Street), but that‘s actually good, so only people in the know go there ;)Definitely worth a visit, as their sharing dishes are amazing. The menu is small, but for sure holds something for everyone! we will be back...!
You assume they will be small plates... Rest assured, theyre not. Great portions. Bold flavors. Innovative.
Great food and great service
Amazing dishes. Everything well presented and tasty. Worked through the whole menu and WOW. Hidden gem! Will go again. Highly recommended.
4.2 out of 5I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Spek & Bone. This restaurant has seen a few makeovers over the past decade - it is now in the best shape it has ever been. The menu offers an interesting selection of dishes and tastes. Everything is served in small plates, which makes for a fun dining experience as two can share and taste of five different meals (or how many ever) for dinner. I only wish there were a wider (and more surprising) variety of wines available...Although I personally favour fine dining, I had fun at this restaurant. The meal was lovely. The service was exceptional. The restaurant has a very comfortable atmosphere. What a solid experience...! Highly recommended for when youre in the winelands and in the mood for a laid-back meal in town. 😁
Amazing! The service was outstanding, the food was delicious and the chef takes the time to chat to his patrons. I have already been there twice and will keep going back many more times.
Best kept secret in Stellenbosch! One of our favourite breakfast spots.
Amazing food, ambience and service. All the different tastes works in perfect harmony. Hidden gem in the beautiful Stellenbosch. Keep up the excellent quality!
Great place. Very special and different. Please to visit and enjoy each bite of your food and each sip of your vine. We did have great time there.
Excellent! Try their signature breakfast... Yeah, you guessed it: called spek and bone. Great location, good food, great value
Excellent tapas style dining! Friendly service, good wine list but not good selection of non-alcoholic drinks. Great for informal lunch or dinner.
Excellent small plates venue with super delicious wine list.
After a five-star experience 11 months ago that included us ordering a second round of some of the plates and the chef coming out to greet the table, todays visit was a frightful disappointment. A tiny plate of salami slices for R85? A waiter who simply lists all the wines on the menu when prompted for those available by the glass? Store-bought mayonnaise? A card machine that doesnt accept virtual cards? Check, check, check and check.Check, please. Were outta here.
I love this place! A great vibe with friendly staff and the food is so worth it!!!
The food here is good. It is tapas style and the menu changes regularly. They have an extended wine list of the lesser known wines in the region, a very interesting place to eat, highly recommended.
Jewel of Stellenbosch! Knowledgeable and friendly waiters who go the extra mile (in our case to accommodate allergies), fantastic wine menu and a truly delicious and creative menu of small plates to share. Go here if you are looking for an interesting and beautiful place to eat some delectable food.
Great restaurant. Awesome sharing concept and great wine selection on menu.
Food was awesum and the headchef came to greet us and explain the cut of meat we ordered
Superb food & friendly service! Often changing menu keeps me coming back. Innovative concept of smaller plates of food to share.
Loved it! Will visit again
Ambience, service and the most important part of any dining experience... Hands down the best tasting food (from textures to bold flavour), sharing experience ever. Love it and a customer for life. Oh, some if the coolest named wines Ive seen thus far... The recipe for success is found here!!! Thanks to jacques a very passionate and friendly manager and all staff
Awesome experience! Relaxed atmosphere. Fabulous food. Great service. Delightful wine selection. A must if you are in Stellenbosch. Tip: order a selection for the table for everyone to try and take it slow. Wine and MCC could have been served more chilled.
Amazing food, great wine, the staff are engaging and knowledgeable, and the music creates an outstanding vibe
Awesome atmosphere with great food. Staff went out of their way to accomodate us! Couldnt ask for anything more, just brilliant. Great for families and friends
Fantastic experience. Excellent food and concepts
Unfortunately very average, but definitely has the pretentious feel most people chase when wanting to feel special. Definitely not going back since its just not worth it. Rather go somewhere else.
Nice and cozy place. You get to sit under a large tree and order food that is special. There are neat little plates that are we suited for sharing.Make sure you apply some mosquito protection as thet tend to cluster around the tree. Got bitten quite a lot.
Menu changes often to keep one interested. Solo dining is better when the temperature is pleasant.
Great taste complexity in dishes. Eclectic wine list
Absolutely great experience, ambiance and delicious food to match. I would 100 % recommend this to any foodies and fine dining enthusiast.
One of the best restaurants in Stellenbosch, top quality, interesting food and an incredible wine list. Great value too!
Very good service and a nice selection of tapa-style foods, which are perfect for sharing on a romantic evening out, or with a big group of friends. The wine list is also impressive.
The food was excellent. As a verlgetseian I was SPOILT for choice. The desserts were not worth the calories though. The sauce over the pancakes are too sweet and the peppermint crisp ice cream needs flavour.
Even though the entrance is a bit hidden, its a place for tourists with tourist prices and quality. I saw no locals eating, and thats always telling. At 50% of their current prices - and without all the pretenses - it would make a funny little restaurant. Now, its just a pretentious place with overpriced average food. The ingredients are cheap and the flavors out of balance. For example they offer steak with basil pesto (is there any other type of pesto?). The steak itself was very average for South African standards, although a European tourist might think its OK. They still ask a premium price for it, and thats not OK.Then the tomato salad with Gruyere was mostly bread soaked in balsamico, and a teaspoon of some type of grated cheese on top of it. It could have been any type of cheese since it was impossible to taste any of it. Obviously, genuine Gruyere is expensive, but now you end up paying 90rands for a plate of toasted bread and vinegar. Im sure its profitable, but not something youd enjoy eating.Pleasant atmosphere though, and decent service. It all looks and sounds nice, so tourists will be happy. No way its 4.x stars. Funny name though.
Wonderful food, great outdoor seating, friendly service. Requires reservation normally. They serve sharable dishes, 1.5 to 3 dishes per person.
Fantastic atmosphere. Great vegetarian options.
The gnocchi needed salt and the quail was too tough to share (couldnt devide it). They should mention that the tapas is shareable for 3 and not 4. Had to share tapas that was meant for 3 people between 4 people. Always shocking to pay inflated prices for wine that you can get in stellenbosch on the farm. Over all not terrible but not blown away.
Creative, tasty ‘street food’Wonderfull ambience under one of the oldest vines in Stellenbosch.Great place for a romantic date.
Fantastic food, beautiful place and great atmosphere
Excellent wee hidden away Tapas fine-dining restaurant. Tasty and flavoursome food that didnt disappointment even on the second visit.
Awesome place with awesome food
High expectations going in were not disappointed. Got to meet the chef who I see had given his own genuine character to this unpretentious yet excellent dining experience.
Just WOW!!! Not your typical eatery. The food is made for sharing, there are a selection of small plates to choose from with exquisite fine dining food. If you are a group of about four people you can experience almost every single dish on the menu! All this and it wont be much more than if you go to the regular every day restaurant.
A small and welcoming bistro in a backyard at Dorp Street. Small dishes and excellent sellected wines. Will return
Tappas extraordinaire. Delicious meals to share with the whole table. From mussels to chicken livers. Every bite was fantastically designed.
Nice atmosphere. The portions are very generous even though its tappas. Will see me again.
