Absolutely disappointed!This restaurant came so highly recommended but failed to deliver. I ordered the 500g rump tonight and after 2 bites all I could taste was some kind of fuel. I called the manager and pointed out the awful taste in the meat. He confirmed with me that there was indeed a fuel like taste after sampling the steak. His excuse was that the flames were high. I paid for my starter and left with the horrid taste still lingering in my mouth. I will never go back there.

We were looking forward to having our expensive dry aged sirloin on the bone. As we do not like sugar on our meat, we asked for no basting with the barbeque sauce which is done by default. When the steaks arrived, we understood why. An insult to good meat, in this case it would have been the only way to mask the terrible fuel-like flavour. On top of that, there was nothing dry-aged about the meats taste and consistency. Whether they lie, have a misfunctioning chamber or do not adhere to the time meat needs to spend there, is unclear.We had been very hungry and so consumed halves of our steaks until the bad taste in our mouths became intolerable. The manager we complained to, took one steak off of the check. But needless to say, we shall not make the mistake of visiting this place again.

Shocking service tonight, 24 September 2021. My husband and I were seated, menus placed in front of us and then promptly forgotten about. After 15 minutes of being ignored, we left. Walked across to an exremely busy Trumps, where the service was fantastic and the food awesome.

Well prepared, steak was done exactly how I had asked. Portions were good.

Very friendly reception and service. Food was prepared very quickly but the waiters are not very attentive. The Shephards Pie ratio of potato to mince was slightly high but delicious nonetheless. The portions are generous and your money will be well spent. However, the lamb shank cut was very fatty and my takeaway excluded the side sauce. Furthermore, the menu has a large selection of lamb options for those that dont consume steak/beef, however the beef sausage appetiser is divisive for this very reason. Worth a visit.

Been here a few times.Upmarket restaurant situated on the square.Fresh bread/ butter and sausage in a delicious sauce served complimentary with your drinks.Plenty of waiters to assist. A good selection of dishes on the menu. Even though it’s the Butcher Shop they do cater for vegetarians and fish lovers. Pick your own cut to have it prepared the way you like it.

Great service and set in a fabulous location. However, the only reason I go there is for the lamb ribs which are prepared perfectly. Will be a sad day if that dish is ever removed from the menu.

I went here with 4 of my friends, we are a mix of final year university students and recent graduates.Picking up the menu very quickly resulted in all of us ordering a burger with chips and we were all very pleasantly surprised with how awesome they turned out to be. The ketchup that was served with the chips appears to have been made in house and was really awesome. I liked the particular grind that the prep staff used for the patties themselves.The staff were attentive and not overbearing, my empty glass seemed to vanish off the table without me noticing that the waiter had taken it. I do not think that the claims that the staff were inattentive is actually true, it leads me to believe that the other reviewers want slaves to sate their egos rather than pleasant people to help with the ordering process.

This used to be an amazing place to dine but sadly after 2 years of coming back to dine there the service and food has dropped.first time I had the best oxtail there but on the this time around my oxtail was not so tasty at all. The malva pudding was not really tasty.. we love this place but this time around I was disappointed. March 2020

So today I took my partner to The Butcher Shop & Grill at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton to celebrate Womens Day. We were greeted at the door warmly. After having a quick browse through the butcher shop we were shown to our table. The waiter asked us if we would like to order drinks. My partner asked for a glass of Red wine and on the menu under beers it showed Castle Light Draft so I ordered that. Waiter comes back, sorry we dont have Castle Light Draft. Okay so I ordered a Stella Artois Draft beer. After browsing the menu I decide to have the Lamb Kidney starter. Waiter! Sorry we dont have! So I decide against having a starter and decide to have a T-bone steak as a main. Sorry we dont have. Needless to say I paid for our drinks and phoned The Grill House in Melrose Arch and had a most delicious meal and at half the price I would have paid at The Butcher Shop & Grill. As for the manager well he was a waist of time and full of poor excuses. The Butcher Shop & Grill you will never see me darkening your door step again.

The steak was perfect. A must try is their pork ribs well grilled. Spinach was excellent. Everything is great here in The Butcher. Except their service, everything was nice except their service. Came here more than once their service is average.

Highly recommend the oyster and snail as starters! the oyster is so fresh and sweet, and the garlic cream sauce of the snail is so delicious that i almost finish all the bread. steak is perfectly cooked. great ambience, staff is very patient and polite.

Poor. They advertise a 2015 vintage wine, and serve a 2018 at the same cost without bringing it to your attention. When you find out about their deviousness they refer you to fine print on their menu. It is not a normal experience for me to read fine print in a restaurant. The manager George is rude, unapologetic and really quite incompetent. Makes one think that exposing your family to Covid risk to help struggling business is just not worth it.

Ordered takeaway lunch...the legendary TBSAG beef ribs with accompaniments...for a special lunch at a friends...WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED 😋

Had a wonderful time at the restaurant with my family. The food is worthwhile and cooked very nice. Would give a 5th star if the Wagyu beef had more marbling. Not really worth the price but hopefully they can do something about it.

The butcher Shop is a great grill. It is very popular with the locals and for very good reasons. The original restaurant has expanded along both sides of the covered ailse one side of the Mandela Square.The Restaurant has a very wide selection of meats and fish both local and choice foreign. There are also a wide range of drinks including wine menu.The staff are efficient and friendly, food is promptly served. Patrons can even select the cuts prior to cooking

First time at lunch. Was seated at the bar as place was packed and was by myself. Braced myself for a long wait for food as it was very busy but to my pleasant surprise my meal came within 30 mins of ordering. Wine by the glass selection could be more varied but otherwise, it hit the spot!

Good variety of selection of meat, the price is a bit high but it good meat, ordered a medium rare rump, it was delicious. FYI, the minimum cut is 300g, so for the ladies and gents who wants to eat less than that, apparently you need the managers approval to have the meat cut less than 300g. Overall, good restaurant and good meat.

The food itself wasnt bad, but it was a really uncomfortable and unenjoyable dining experience.The steak was done very well, and taste was great, the starters were also fantastic. However the service was absolutely atrocious. We were only half way done though our starters and had some salads left, the waitress without asking cleared everything before we were finished to serve the mains.We thought the better as it might have been a misunderstanding, when the mains were served, again we had not finished everything and our table was already being cleared.The waitress just gave us an extremely unpleasant look as if we owed her something. Asking for dessert menu seemed like we were asking for too much.Not enjoyable at all.

We can’t complain about the service because there was no service. And the very expensive cheese sauce we received was a plain bechamel sauce, no cheese in sight…

Highly recommended. The ultimate fine dining experience! Had the halloumi and calamari salad - which was more than a generous portion and absolutely scrumptious. They have a very interesting dessert selection - will definitely return to try it out.

Quality of the food was as always excellent - one of the very top restaurants for a prime quality steak.The disappointing part of the experience was the poor service. Things have really gone downhill badly since my last visit. Not only did we get exactly the opposite seating from what we specified when we booked, but we also did not have a dedicated waiter - nobody knew what was going on and we were asked the same questions two to three times by different servers. They were neither friendly nor helpful and would disappear for long periods at a time during which we had to get up and go look for someone to provide us with service.I am very sad and disappointed with the bad experience - in lieu of the food quality, I am compelled to start looking for another quality steakhouse where I can have a pleasant dining experience with professional service.

This place is Brilliant. Staff and friendly and service is good. They start you off with complementary bread and wors which is very tasty. The starters portions are quite big. The fillet steak is very tender and quality of the meat is good. You can even chose your own cut of meat from the butcher. Very nice atmosphere and good ambience. Probably known as the original place for corporates to have dinner. Its been around for quite sometime and we have always taken our colleagues here for a team lunch or dinner. Conveniently situated in Nelson Mandela Square. Their steaks are always good. Service is great, i personally think the decor needs a bit of an update.

I had read reviews about the Butcher shop and really looked forwarded to dining here.The restaurant is huge and very impressive especially the butcher shop where they display the meats. Quite an extensive menu with a very nice wine list.My wife ordered the filet was very satisfied. I am a ribeye fan but wasnt impressed with my steak. Disappointed. We both got sweet potato which were white and sweet.You can order different sauces on the side, extra of course.

We have been to the branch at Nelson Mandela Square on a few occasions, but this is certainly our last. Although friendly, the staff are unattentive, the ambience dull. The smell and taste of the Sparta meat on the bone was over bearing, even tasted and smelt off, perhaps the meat was removed from a vacuum and not give the opportunity to air. Definitely not worth the money considering the strong competition in the area. This restaurant is by far overrated and sadly for our family was a disappointment!!!

What can be said about this place other than it’s fantastic. Good selection of steaks both fresh and aged. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely should be on your list, your taste buds will appreciate it.

Stylish, upscale dining with a game of the day option. I enjoyed a springbok steak and it was excellent. The wine list is too notch. Service was attentive. Highly recommended.

Never been to a restaurant where you first ask the chef to cut off your piece of steak before! Very busy, bustling restaurant with modern decor. A little noisy due to its popularity but that didnt detract from the great steak and very tasty chips.

Had ribeye medium rare for dinner. Would definitely recommend visiting to experience South African steaks.Pros: ribeye was delicious and I would recommend getting medium rare as they do tend to cook it slightly more than requested. Also South African steaks seem to be leaner so medium rare is definitely the way to go. Service was great and view is also great.Cons: relatively higher in price but the location calls for it.

We decided to try out the wagyu steak and it is definitely worth it. Steak was cooked to perfection. The service is great. We will definitely be back

Linda and I had an overall amazing dining experience last night. We were greeted quickly at the door, and completed all the necessary Covid precautions before being shown to our table.All front of house staff were friendly and efficient.Together, we ordered the Wagyu Sirloin steaks and 1kg of prawns. The steak was the best that I have eaten, perfectly cooked. The prawns were large and tasty.We certainly recommend this restaurant to any of our friends and guests.

The Somm (Terrence) was a pleasure and the walk in wine room is full of wonderful options at excellent value for visitors. €60 for an 18 year old beautiful wine.The steak is simply superb, SA beef deserves its reputation, melt in the mouth! Sides almost as good.I want to go back tomorrow!

Visited the Nelson Mandela Square branch today and the service was shocking from Toddy, the deboned chilli chicken was tasteless and deceiving. It looked liked tenderised chicken breast. The manager was non interested, just explaining how the meal is prepared. We still paid for the 1 deboned chicken meal that we did not eat and gave the waiter more than a 10% tip and he was not grateful. We will never ever go back.

This is a huge restaurant situated at Nelson Mandela Square. The staff are very courteous and the ambiance is nice.I ordered a T-bone which came with mashed potatoes. The meat was juicy...I enjoyed it but some bites tasted funny, that’s why I didn’t give it five stars...

Must visit when you are in Nelson Mandela Square Sandton - Amazing lunch time meals offered, served between 12pm and 5pm. We had the fish and chips and the pulled lamb pita, totally delicious. Incredible liquor range available and awesome staff. Smoking cognac lounge available.

Having asked for rare, the fillet steak looked great at first, as you can see in the picture. But as I soon found out, the piece was still cold. After sending it back, it came back reheated, but still cold. Third time I suggested cooking it medium rare, to ensure good temperature throughout. I got a new cut, which also arrived cold.The manager then told me that rare and medium rare cuts can sometimes be served cold...Finally changed my order to a sirloin steak, which was good, but meanwhile the rest of my family had finished their plates.Our waiter was great, but management and chefs were absolutely terrible. Their attitude only made it worst.I do not recommend this restaurant to anybody.

Waiter got our order wrong. Then scolded us for him getting the order wrong and us wanting the waghu steaks .he didnt apparently hear us.Waiters name was timms. He was absolutely rude . Everytime I spoke to him he walked away.Then my boyfriend got food poisoning from his steak and has to go to the doctor.Cant believe we has such a bad experience as Ive been here before and it was never like this.When I spoke to management..she said this could be all hearsay. Taking no responsibility.

It was recommended by a friend, we had Filet, medium rare... what a treat, perfect temperature , succulent piece of beef filet.Only disappointed by inadequacy of the bar, as they had no Martini to offer, I could get a vodka tonic but alas no Martini.

Two shades of Steak!Lets start with the good- great meat selection and cuts. Location is pretty good for a hang out at the square or to stroll through the mall.Bad: terrible staff attitude. I asked for a 8-10 oz Argentinian rib eye steak and was told that they dont serve less than 13-14oz (400 grams). While Im looking at small cuts sitting at the meat bar.. butcher asked me how much to cut, you are the meat guy! Figure out 8-10oz.Two shades of steak!!!! I asked for medium steak and what I got was medium rare and rare (incredibly incompetent griller).Asked for a small bottle of water for myself and received a big bottle instead.Simply put, you cant be a top class steak house with horrible service, mediocre butchers and awful grillers. I refuse to believe South Africans settle for this because Ive had some amazing steaks in South Africa.P/s: I had butcher block in Dammam (Saudi) out of all places and the sheep meat was just incredible.

The service is by far the worst .Have been to The butcher grill in Cape Town on more than once the service was always amazing. The staff continuously provided world class set .The waiter seemed like he was uninterested while serving us.The plates were dirty the floor was filthy this is defiantly not the standard I had expected. Disappointed and defiantly not coming back.The waiter that was serving us is (Advisor) He defiantly tainted tainted the Franchise’s reputation.
