Brightly and beautifully decorated pub right opposite Morningside Clinic and city lodge.What a lovely pleasure to the senses , Mozambican inspired themed pub.Lots of tables inside and out - the staff was attentive and we had someone passing frequently to come ask if all is okay. Lovely big delicious portions of food sizes , fresh crunchy food . Live music just adds that touch.The toilets where all clean and filled with toilet paper. Every place had a touch of thought even the ceiling has flags. wonderful non snotty place to hang out in Sandton.

Laurentina in Morningside is hidden in a building that looks like an old Victorian house in the middle of Sandton, busting with Afro-Porto vibes. That’s African/Portuguese for the uninformed around here.House at the beachWe walked into this Victorian house to be welcomed by bright colours and smiling faces. The tables, chairs, walls and outfits are all vibrant and just screams Mozambiqan holiday, especially with the warm and soft lights dimly lighting the area for a romantic evening. The night started with tropical, make-you-feel-like-you-are-on-holiday, music, which was perfect for those starter drinks. Sadly, as the restaurant filled up and became all noisy, the music also just stopped, only returning much later.Rub a dub dub, get ready for the grubHoly moly, if you are hungry then this is the place for you, as their portion sizes are humongous. Starters, mains, desserts, all of it was quite a mouthful.Let’s beginWe started with something dear to our hearts, good ol’ peri-peri chicken livers, and this was truly a winner, a hero, the victor for the evening if you will. It didn’t burn too much but had that perfect hint of spiciness with the sauce that we could almost drink as-is. The livers were cooked to perfection and soaked up the sauce with ease. Damn, just started drooling as we typed this.Main course here we comeThe mains were all over the place. All our plates had one thing in common, and that was prawns, tonnes and tonnes of prawns.We had one of their most highly recommended dishes, the Quarter Chicken and Prawn combo. This dish had best of both worlds, the chicken was a bit dry and way too salty to even finish which left us disappointed, but the prawns, oh the prawns was what great chefs strive to make. Lightly marinated in a lemon butter sauce, not dripping down your elbows, but also not bone dry, each bite was packed full of flavour that really enhanced the meat of the prawn.Our next main was the Camarao Nacional, which is a full plate of princess prawns prepared in a beer and garlic sauce. Sounds tasty, but wasn’t what we hoped for, as the sauce itself was very heavy, and just plain bland. To finish off a plate soaked in a one-dimensional sauce isn’t our forte.The final main was the Bife de Marisco, a rump topped with prawns and calamari in a white wine sauce. This was also a let-down. The steak was overcooked, and the turf part of the dish was also nothing to inspire as it was also overcooked and rubbery. The sauce was again very one-dimensional and this time the dish had a fishyness to it that wasn’t something we enjoyed.Finishing it offWe ended it all off with the basic, but always winning, ice-cream with chocolate sauce. The ice-cream was light and real vanilla, none of that fake stuff, with a very rich dark chocolate to cover it. Again the portion was huge, big enough for all to share, but it was really tasty.Friendly Laurentina staffThe waiters at Laurentina were on point from beginning to end. Greeting and welcoming us in with smiles, always making sure we had a drink in hand and ready to start up a conversation as soon as they got to the table. They knew the menu well and were happy to give their recommendations. They wanted to take pictures for us and be part of them as well. It really seemed like they enjoyed the night as much as we did.VerdictThe food at Laurentina was a bit of a 50/50 but the 50 we enjoyed was truly some of the best dishes we had in quite a while. That paired with the welcoming service and holiday atmosphere makes this a great place to spend meal time. A great Mozambican themed restaurant in Sandton. They specialise in all the classic Mozambican dishes. The prawns are great and come in a variety of bastings. Overall the food was excellent and so was the service from the staff. They have daily specials and live music on some days. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. There is also a disabled accessible toilet downstairs. Ample parking is available.

Im so very disappointed, other than our server Kalvin there was nothing to write home about, probably one of the worst meals I have had and paid for in a very long time, if you decide to frequent this venue phone ahead as they couldnt supply half the menu, and what they could supply was very mediocre, I read many a revue while sitting through this meal, couldnt believe it was the same place were sitting in

The experience was great but due to the COVID-19 we were just 2, me and my wife, for 2 hours. We enjoyed the meal and the good music.

Service was soooo slow. Only 3 tables in the whole restaurant and we still waited over 1 hour for our food. Heaven only knows how long it would take if the place was full. Food was reasonably good.

30 minutes after arrival they advised that they had run out of both chicken and calamari??? In a Portuguese restaurant??? Restaurant was pretty empty yet starters took 45 minutes and main course nearly an hour. Asked for some bread with the mains and the waiter mumbled something and never came back. Had NO single malted whiskeys??? Took clients there for dinner so the evening was very embarrassing.

I had such an amazing experience with Carlos and his team with our lunch order today. Carlos takes pride in offering great service with impeccable standards. Our food was deliciously prepared and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Happy customer and will definitely return! Even though this was a pick up order, I look forward to the days when we can sit down and enjoy the full value of this beautiful gem of a restaurant.

First visit last night. Great staff, all super friendly and attentive. Casual, wooden bench type seating outside. I am not an expert on Portuguese cuisine - I did enjoy the meal and it was most certainly well priced! The Portuguese acoustic style live music added to the atmosphere.

Their menu & Mozambican cooking needs to be revised urgently ! It’s a real shame that it’s not true Mozambican , they need me to teach them to cook real Mozambican dishes and give an awesome experience to their clients , really , where is the Zambeziana source with the fish or chicken ? Where is the proper curry ? Where is the peanuts ? And meals with cashews , where is the chicken cafriel ? Where is the clams à Bulhão de Pato with coriander ? Come on , do the owners have any clue how to be a Mozambican restaurant ? It’s no good having the marketing display & then a huge disappointment in the dishes , you need me to show you how to cook & also shorten the menu with real specialities , so sorry

Not bad but not great.

What a horrible experience. I have previously eaten here and it has been good, but tonight made me never want to go back. Firstly, they had no stock of prawns, calamari, or ice cream. My chicken livers were inedible. I suspect the meat was off as it had a very sharp horrible taste. The bread roll served with it was old and stale. Our main course of espatado had clearly been cooked in stages as the chicken was bone dry, the cubes of beef in the middle medium rare, and the meat at the top overdone . The worse thing about it all was that even though we communicated our dissatisfaction to the waitress, no manager came and spoke to us. A complete let down in every sense

Lovely place but waiters were not able to explain the portguese words on the menu so ordering was not made easy. I ordered the prawn curry. Sauce was generous but there were may be 3 or 4 shredded prawns in there, not enough to taste the flavour of prawns. They served a small amount of rice with a large amount of curry sauce and then charges me extra for a small portion of extra rice. My husband had the whole baby chicken with a spoonful of mixed vegetables as a side... not enough for a man or a hungry woman.

From the moment I walked through the door I could smell such amazing spices. The environment was inviting, which is contrary to some of the other restaurants in Sandton. My food was absolutely amazing. The “Espetada Mista” is delicious and a great go to on the menu.There was a manager there who was so amazing and attentive to my experience there. His name is Carlos and he’s actually from Mozambique (where this resturant gets it theme).I have been there twice now and the food was even better than the last time I had gone there. 150% recommend this place for excellent food and vibes.

I received my delivered order of Full baby chicken and chips promptly and with a smile. The chicken was moist and delicious , with just enough mild peri peri to evoke happy memories of LM. This place is the closest youll get to Mozambique in a city. Consistently great food, relaxed atmosphere, well trained staff. All this place needs is the ocean, or maybe the ocean needs IT. Give it a try, itll quickly become a favorite.

I went to Laurentina a while back and found it fantastic in every way but went there tonight for my birthday and was a bit disappointed despite ordering exactly the same,had mediocre service from Lilly who we both couldnt hear,she brought the wrong main meal,gave us no choice of starch and walked off with my unfinished drink,the daiquiri tasted like their was no alcohol in it,calamari was small,sauce watery and shot glass sized and chips all factory cut where they were proper chips before,there was no atmosphere like previously and just felt average,feel a bit stupid as I work across the road and refer everyone there.

Worst experience in a restaurant in a long time. Were told 30 mins for food due to power outage, waited over an hour for food, which we never got. Had to keep asking what was going on. Continuously had to get someones attention for service. Eventually complained about this and their lack of interest and concern walked out without paying for drinks and non-exist food. Poor service. Stay away

A genuine Mozambican atmosphere in the middle of Joburg is hard to find. This place pulls it off. The piri piri is genuine, beers cold, and the service subtle but omnipresent.

Was at this restaurant on Thursday 9th January 2020. We were all so disappointed by the standard of the food. Although tasty the baby chickens were dry. The chips stale and the salad terrible! The hake and mash were substandard. I will never visit this restaurant again.

The chicken (from a Portuguese perspective) is simply awesome. It is a pity that they did not carry the beer that the restaurant is named after.

Sadly, the Laurentina I previously reviewed is a thing of the past, having a captive audience ( the city lodge hotel next door) has led to incompetent service, stale bread rolls (1/2 a roll per seving), microwaved and overcooked food, and mismanagement has brought this once fine establishment into disrepute. So much so that I will not be returning there ever again.I would be extremely worried about how this 1 restaurant in the financial hub district of South Africas image and reputation affects the rest of the restaurants as far as a franchise is concerned...

After a 5 star experience my first visit, the second was disappointing in terms of the food - the prawns were significantly smaller and nowhere near as flavoursome. Lukass service was outstanding regardless.

Yea i dunno what happened there hey.... trinchado is more like thai curry ( at least the way the slivers are cut ), milho frito bland , and no spinach as far as i can tell ( so just deep fried pap ). Prawns tiny and overcooked. And i am pretty sure i ordered the half chicken, but got a full pigeon instead. ( i think it was the baby chicken ?! ). Tough, dry. Went there when they just opened , pretty good, dont know what happened now, but however seems to be a franchise prob. Went to northcliff one as well , complained about the timy shrimp called prawns on menu, with the manager trying to explain that its just semantics and prawns and shrimp are actully the same thing. * rolly eyes *. Nah thanks... will take my wallet elsewhere. ( service was pretty good though !)

The chicken was great the prawns tasteless and overcooked. Service was not great. A HUGE issue ...most of the people around us were smoking. Its a partially covered patio and smoking is prohibited. The owner should adhere to the laws in place. I found it difficult to eat my meal . This has to stop ! Laurentina will NEVER see us again.

To begin the restaurant is very nice and cosy, it was a cold night and the heaters were on and it was pleasant to be in there.The waiting staff was very friendly and I cannot complain about the service we got from them.Where ive had to cut on stars is the fact that we sat down and it took well over an hour for the food to arrive, I go out to eat because Im hungry. Having to wait over an hour doesnt make for a great experience.I ordered a Chicken Curry, the presentation of the food was bad. My curry was in a small bowl and my rice was on the side of the plate, some rice was touching the underside of the curry bowl (I dont know where that bowl has been) and I was given a steak knife to eat with that.The portion size for a R100 meal was very small. Truthfully the curry was not bad, but there was nothing memorable about it either, and I left not feeling content like I ate a decent portion size.Cant say Ill go back any time soon unfortunately.
