Yesterdays outing to the Market was a first time for me. We hosted a bridal brunch.The venue is beautiful, different and unique... I really liked it! Definitely a must to host a party 🥳The food was great but the service needs a bit of attention. Its not bad but its not great!It would be amazing if the waiters were trained just little bit more to give it that extra special something... and then it would be wonderful. Im not nit picking, Im just being honest.Id definitely go for another visit though.

Food is good,second time eating there.Son says best burger ever however the vegetarian options was a rating of 3.Great atmosphere and burgers options gains a 4 star!

Nice and intimate vibe, very inviting. Lovely for a quiet afternoon catching up with friends and family. The food is also great, slightly pricier than some similar restaurants but quite worth it.

This place has great atmosphere. It is set in a perfect location which is easy to locate. The staff is friendly and professional while providing great customer service. The food is great, however it takes time to get to the table and the portions are a bit small. I enjoyed lamb chops and vegetables they were really good and juicy. Ill definitely go back there again and will recommend the place to others.

A memorable and unique dinner for two under the sky. Amazing staff, delicious food and intimate atmosphere. I wish the menu had more options though😅 but the overall experience was close to perfection. A very welcoming environment.

Worst experience ever. We go all over Durban to different restaurant every week for breakfast. The eggs benedict is big enough to feed a 3 year old but priced as a main meal at R135 then we got no sauce with it at all. Then we waited for a hour for our food. Please check your prices this is shocking and would not recommend it to anyone for a excellent breakfast.

This restaurant was unbelievably disappointing! Compared to how this little piece of heaven used to be! Toilets were dirty, menu terrible, prices ridiculous, venue scruffy and uncared for! Was so embarrassed to have asked visitors to meet us there!

The outdoor area is very chic & delivers a great vibe. The food was not great & the bathrooms are highly questionable in terms of cleanliness and functionality. The service levels of the server was impeccable. I would highly recommend the venue for drinks with friends or coffee with your partner. It is not a meal option for me personally.

Food menu was excellent but the food did not match the expectations and the hype of the menu. The cappuccino bean was burnt and you could taste the bitterness in it. We were disappointed with the stale ciabatta bread. Overall the service was average and was disappointed that the chef only apologized to one table about the stale bread but neglected to come to our table to apologize. The setting was beautiful and very rustic.

Disappointing to say the leastI booked a table for 8 on Mothers Day. I was not informed that there would be a set menu on the day and that the regular menu would not be available. We were a table of 5 vegetarians which the set menu did not cater for as it had only on veg option (eggplant), that most of us do not eat. We asked that they make an exception and offer us the regular menu as noone notified us about the set menu restrictions beforehand. The staff were not accommodating, we had to practically beg for them to at least accommodate one more veg option. All they could offer was pasta. We eventually had to call around trying to find another restaurant that could accommodate us for lunch at the last minute, which is near impossible on Mothers Day. Although the food is of a high standard, I would not return to this restaurant for the poor flexibility, hospitality and lack of accurate information. Certainly almost ruined the day for our family, thankfully we found somewhere else to eat, that had both a set menu and regular menu to offer us

Market Cafe is absolutely amazing!We booked out the venue for our year end function and all I can say is we had an all round GREAT experience.Avril is the absolute best person to deal with when planning an event, she is so helpful, accommodating and always friendly!The staff on the night were unbelievable - such great personalities and made sure that we were very well taken care of.The food was an absolute hit amongst all our guests!Highly highly recommend.

Excellent service and everyone was polite, friendly and helpful! Good selection of vegetarian options, some could be made vegan by removing the cheese. Lovely atmosphere and thankfully we had good weather so we could sit on the verandah which was lovely. There was a good selection of beer, wine and cocktails. We all ordered coffee which was delicious, but Im not sure what the rest of their hot drink selection is like.

Its great for those cute pictures, but the spinach pasta I ordered was bland. Theres also only one bathroom that everyone shares, plus there was load shedding when we arrived so said bathroom was pitch black.

I dont think I would have sat down, drafted this message and waste my time sending it if what Im saying or wrote isnt true. I booked the market place restaurant on on the 29th of August n my bookings went well, I gave out all the information that was needed. I received no calls or emails from anyone so I assumed all is well. On the day of the celebration I came earlier than everyone to make sure that everything is in order. When I got to your restaurant some gentleman (not quite sure if he is a manager or what) assisted me and told me that there were some issues regarding my booking but that will be sorted out as he can see on the booking list that I was the first person to book compared to everyone that made bookings on that day, he apologized again n promised to sort everything out. He came back to me while I waited n told me that everything is sorted now n they are setting up a table. They set the table in front of me and I had to wait. When they were finished setting up a table, he gave us an authority (clear indication) that should sit at this table. We wouldnt have set without being told to sit there. Your attitude when you approached us was uncalled for. Im not throwing in any race card but it sure looked you undermined us. Ive been at your restaurant before and your workers have always gave me the best service I could ever ask for, but when it comes to you (THE OWNER) it a different story. Thats not how you treat customers dear.

My sister and I visited the famous Market Cafe for lunch. The restaurant is beautiful with stripped wooden flooring, matte charcoal black walls and tasteful yellow seating. The aesthetics of the restaurant aside, the food was appalling and I was shocked that such a celebrated restaurant could serve up such terrible offerings. Ive looked at pictures posted by other reviewers and some of what we ordered did not even look the same, such as the baked camembert with thyme and honey starter. The baked camembert was runny and looked like the cheese had separated, with a spoonful of raspberry compote in the centre. It was not appetizing. The arrabiata pasta with prawn and chorizo tasted bitter, as if the tomato sauce was not cooked long enough to get rid of the harsh, acidic tomato flavour. For R130, dont expect more than 4 tiny prawns and a few slices of chorizo. The sage roasted butternut and bacon pasta was atleast palatable, except that the butternut tasted steamed, not roasted with none of the caramelization or sweetness expected from roasted butternut. The bacon was not rendered at all and had an unappetizing layer of cold fat that killed the flavour of the cream sauce. We declined dessert.Response to the ownerAfter having the chef come and explain the flavour of the baked Camembert and raspberry, an appetizer that I have eaten and enjoyed many times, I was put off. I do not need the flavours of food explained to me. There was obviously something wrong with the dish and it was an insult to my intelligence for the chef to assume that I needed an explanation. There is a problem with consistency in your restaurant. I have attached pictures from another reviewer who ordered the same starter. Please compare for yourself and answer if those would have tasted the same. Our R89 starter was discounted to R44.After such an off putting experience with your chef and the starter, we just wanted to pay the bill and leave, regardless of the subpar standard of the rest of our meal.

Lovely atmosphere especially at night with the string lights and fountain. Food was delicious too, however it did take a while to arrive and part of our order was forgotten only to be put through much later when we brought it up.

Everything was absolutely amazing!!! Id really give it 6 starts if I could. This establishment is so scenic and cosy, I absolutely love the rustic garden feel of it.So I ordered the apple, carrot, and ginger juice which I shall be returning for, however I must admit, the alcoholic menu really did tempt me but I had to hold myself as it was only 10am in the morning.My meal consisted of a hearty full breakfast which was fit for a King, and my friends meal had french toast made from croissants, bacon, pomegranates, banana and some drizzle of honey. I was so tempted to share in that meal as well as it looked so good, but my allergies won this battle.As we left (just before 11h30am), a guitarist entered, so I missed out on a pretty good set from what I was told.

Two weeks ago l visited the market restaurant for a surprise birthday celebration for my sister. I’ve never been so disappointed.I wish to express my dissatisfaction about the service at your established and well-known restaurant. Avril* the boss treated us rudely and inconsiderately. I bacame so embarrassed and confused by the way I and my friends were treated, I didnt even know how to handle the whole situation in a calm way.We were sitting there enjoying our selves and there was also some group of people on the side (mixed races), she then came to our table shouting, asking us to move to another table (rudely and unprovoked), she never asked us nicely, she basically gave us an ultimate that we must move from this table and be squashed somewhere in a corner or we sit outside by the rain. Im not quite sure whether she was undermining us since we were all black people and assumed that we might not be able to afford the restaurant so we must at least be squashed somewhere and open up space for those that will afford. We were 14 and sitting in a table that only accommodates 4 people.. Im highly disappointed and couldnt believe.

Amazing service, great food and music.

I was so disappointed and embarrassed, on the 31/10/2020 it was my friends birthday and there was a confusion regarding that the person who made a booking did not confirm that we still coming, and also the restaurant did not call to confirm that we still coming on the day of our booking. Regarding this matter so called OWNER did not handle this situation very well, instead she was shouting at us as if we people with no brains and people at the restaurant were staring at us. The owner said that she will set the table for us outside,and bare in mind it was raining in Durban, how can we sit out side while it raining. We ended up deciding that we can longer stay at this place with such treatment. While we were waiting for Bolt to arrive she chased us out and she told us that it her restuarant and we must go. Confusions do happen but I think the way the owner of the restaurant treated us was not right at all,this was so disappointing and embarrassing.

The owner of this rastorant needs to learn more skills of Being a good owner rather than behaving like a school girl shouting customers, I never felt so small on my birthday when we there she was shouting us instead of applying a skill of problem solving she actually make a problem, she doesnt know how to communicate I dont know maybe it becouse were black that why u decided to shout us like dogs and kick us out. If were were clever enough u were supposed to know how to solve that issue instead of shouting us in front of other dusromers and your stuff even today Im still angry about what u did to us.

Great experience today at Market. Food was delicious and service excellent. As they were out of stock of the Chenin we requested, we were given a superb substitute at an equivalent price. Greatly appreciated. Will be back soon. Thanks.

We waited 2 hours for canapes ordered a week previously. In addition to this, not everything we ordered arrived. The waiters would bring out a few canapes, disappear for an hour, bring out a few, disappear for an hour. A gin and tonic took half an hour to prepare. After a couple of hours, it was getting late, so I asked if I could settle my part of the bill so I could leave. I was told I couldnt. The waiter kindly offered to ask the manager about it, but I told him not to bother, as I dared not imagine how long that would take. Also, the bathrooms ought to be equipped with a biohazard sign. I will definitely not be back.

Nice vegan options on the menu.

Lovely venue and the food is great. My friend had her wedding there last minute and they were very accommodating. They allowed us to decorate and our guests loved it. The food Lal came out at the same time and was hot. I am very impressed and would love to return for a casual lunch.

What an absolute treat. Food, cocktails, service and atmosphere were all amazing. Special mention of the Tropical Stinger cocktail... the fresh chili was such an interesting (and delicious) twist, definitely a must try.

Good food and ambience

For years this restaurant was always my favorite hidden gem for its beautiful setting, excellent service and amazing food. On Friday night I was still amazed by the beautiful setting and excellent service but very disappointed with the meals from starters to mains to desert. We spoke to our waiter about the starter and to give the restaurant credit the chef apologized and the item was removed from our bill. My disappointment returned with my butternut pasta which lacked any taste of butternut or flavor and some of the pasta was not cooked. After a few bits I could not continue eating. I hoped desert would salvage my opinion but again it was sadly very disappointing. I ordered the brownie which I have tasted in the past and this version tasted nothing like previous occasions. Yet another unfinished meal. After paying for our bill we spoke to the manager on duty and relayed our disappointment and concerns. Sadly I highly doubt I will return to this restaurant. I write this review in the hope that the new management can sort the poor quality of the food as they have a beautiful spot with amazing staff working for them ... the food really needs serious attention.

Had a friends wedding reception there, beautiful venue with great service. Got to speak to the owners and they were good people. Would go there for a meal and perhaps to relax with friends. Not too public and not too loud.

Ambience is everything. Picture fairy lights, trickling water beneath tall trees...let yourself be transported far out of the city. A most creative space. Delicious food. Perfect for a romantic getaway

Best restaurant in town. The service is worth 10 stars. The meals are absolutely delicious. I regret that I let a friend convince me to try their Portuguese duck but she absolutely loved it, duck is just not my thing.The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting yet not too casual. Definitely worth a visit or two.

Ultimate Durban date night spot. The restaurant is looking a little tired and could do with a little revamp. But otherwise the ambiance is always very quaint and the food delicious.
