Great food and service. I was recommended to taste the Oxtail, and I enjoyed it! We were sitting probably at the best table inside, just in front of that fireplace. Atmosphere was relaxed, not too crowded, but we visited it in the middle of the week. There is a spacious parking space outside which can be used.

Everything in this restaurant is of the highest standard. The food, the service and the decor. Very warm hospitality and ambience. Great wine list and cellar. Very professional watering and hosting. One of the best in the Cape.

Amazing over the top food! Made my fiancé’s birthday dinner such a great night with delicious Afrikaans classics. The tomahawk steak is a must but maybe skip the huge portioned appetizer unless you’re ready to eat. Very friendly servers and delicious Wines. Homey interior design.

I attended a work function at De Volkskombuis last night and it was sublime. The atmosphere was relaxed with subtle elegance. Emily, our waitron for the evening was very knowledgeable about the menu and all the daily specialties. She was extremely professional and friendly. The food was mouth watering delicious and beautifully presented.

De Volkskombuis is a unique Modern Farmstyle restaurant - set in al old house with a fire hearth and large wooden beams overhead , renovated to an elegant equivalent to any high end restaurant while still retaining the farmhouse feel. The result is a warm and comforting atmosphere with natural woods, classic farmhouse white walls. The decor, though uniquely farmstyle, is subtle an complements the dining experience.De Volkskombuis offers their modernised take on classical South African dishes without losing authenticity. Steak and Pizzas are also available for the picky eater, and vegetarian options are available although limited.The wine selection is truly remarkable, with a wide selection of local wines of the Stellenbosch and surrounding areas at low prices I have not seen matched in other restaurant.Service was friendly and prompt.I was here on a Friday night, though a bit quiet, I heard the peak times are on Sundays at lunchtime for family meals - quite fitting for the image of the restaurant.Would highly recommend visiting, and will go again.

The unassuming entrance belies the size, atmosphere and hospitality that awaits you at De Volkskombuis.The waiters were courteous, knowledgeable and quick to respond.The menu is diverse enough, but not overwhelming. Ive had the pork on mash and it was perfectly prepared.Theres not a single thing I could criticise. Will most definitely come back for more.

I had such a great time with my colleagues. This place is the perfect setting for year end lunches. I enjoyed the food and the presentation. TC our waiter was amazing and explained everything to me. I give him this 5 star review. I would definitely recommend the MCC and the Sirloin steak with chips and salad, mushroom sauce and onion rings in the side (you cant see it, but I had it 😅) ! The atmosphere and service at the place is great and this made my time there way more enjoyable.

The renovations to Volkskombuis was really worth the wait. A fantastic setting inside and outside next to the river. The menu has some traditional local favorites and the selection of wines are also very good. I always feel good when I walk out the front door.

Finally! It has been a while since I have dined at an establishment deserving a 5 star rating and Im glad I have stumbled upon De Volkskombuis. The venue is absolutely beautiful. Outside there are beautiful trees and a large lawn. I had the Kalahari Springbok Loin and I had it like the chef recommended: medium-rare. Fantastic! I wish I could fit the Bobotie, because that also looked very tasty. For dessert I tried their signature Crème Brulé and it is unique and excellent. Thanks Piniel and William for hosting us. I am looking forward to another opportunity to visit!

Splended, delicious and good value for money

DE Volkskombuis is situated in Aan-de-Wagenweg, in Stellenbosch Central and is perfectly situated for business lunches, especially as there are quite a few businesses nearby. The restaurant is beautiful and was fully restored to its formal glory in 2017. The restaurant is spacious, with private dining areas for those who require it. There are also fireplaces, yellowwood furniture and beautiful floors. On a sunny day, you can also sit outside and enjoy your food with a glass of wine. We had pizza, steak and salad, and according to my children, they have the best pizza in town. The steak was tender and the salad was fresh and crisp. We were welcomed in the parking area by a friendly Volkskombuis representative and the service at the table was professional and fast. We shall definitely go back for a second time.

What a lovely experience! From the tranquil outdoor space to the delectable cuisine, I have only good things to say. I would recommend De Volkskombuis for anyones fine dining option. It was recommended to myself by a local foodie, which already says a lot. The wine selection is also varied and delicious. The experience can be quite pricey, but well worth the value.

The toilets were great, I loved the tiles (except one, which was a bit disturbing); the view was interesting. The waitress was very happy and friendly on the three occasions that we actually saw her. We waited at least half an hour to order and receive water. The wine by the glass was great and well priced. Lamb rack superb (though maybe order it medium if you’re sensitive to red).So all in all a mixed bag of good and annoying, but enough yumminess that we might be back.

I asked the waitress what the most popular dish was for mains, and she replied with the 800g T bone steak (R350)I ordered it medium to rare along with a blue cheese sauce. When my food arrived, my steak was medium to well and no sauce and thought that it will still come. I then waited for my waitress to walk past to catch her eye and eventually after 10 minutes she came and when I asked her about the sauce, she replied that she will get it right away and I also asked her to warm my steak up as it was cold. She brought back the steak warm but more well done and the sauce was in the tiniest cup ever and very watery. I then left it and stared eating only to realize that the sauce doesnt even cover half of my steak. I called the manager with the name Lindon. I asked him if I could get a bit more sauce and that it was very watery, he then replied that thats the way the sauce comes and if I want more I have to pay. I then left it again and as I finished my dry piece of meat (20 min later) he brought another cup of sauce and said this is complimentary, however I said that Ive finished my steak already and that it was too late and that he can return it. He then told me that I can pour it over my onion rings and I said to him that my sauce was for meat not onion rings. Rest of the day the Manager just looked at me everytime. Terrible service and not impressed with a place of that caliber.

Unfortunately a new chef was appointed the traditional dishes that this top notch eatery are famous for were taken off the menu. No more boboti or chicken pie, and the usual bountiful pizzas were replaced with a n utterly disappointing shadow of their former selves.

Was very happy to see the re-opening and new look but definately disappointed with the main courses, pork belly and bobotie. Small changes can make the difference. Risotto and creme brule was fantastic.

What an amazing experience!! Whilst in Stellenbosch, this is a must! Here on business and went to De Volkskombuis two nights in a row! We opted for the more Traditional dishes for main course, including Koekie se kerrie, Boland Bototie and Meraai se Hoender Pie. I don’t know who Meraai is, but hats off one of the best Chicken pies ever! For those with a sweet tooth the Honey and Rooibos Sago pudding, Crème Brûlée or Baked Cheesecake are divine! My favourite part of the dessert was the lemon curd the chef used as part of the presentation of the Sago pudding! Commendable service from start to finish, maître d, waitrons, managers and even the chef was open to a conversation. Beautiful setting and relaxing ambience with a touch of Dutch heritage. Do not miss the opportunity to visit De Volkskombuis when in Stellenbosch!

We sat outside under the trees for lunch. Walked there from our friends home. Meals and wine delicious. Bobby our waiter was excellent. Went the extra mile for us. Definitely worth a visit and we will return.

Great food (traditional and modern dishes, similarly to the blended historic & modern decor. The private room was great for a large group. Get a spot near the fireplace on a chilly evening. Excellent wine selection. Will go back again.
