Very calm surroundings..excellent food..even better company..10/10 Backsberg..will defs return

Wonderful experience! Attended a birthday picnic at this venue. Our picnic space was private and secluded on a well maintained lawn. Picnic platters were excellent with a good variety of food and snacks. Service received from the staff taking care of the group was great. The wine and Brandy tasting offered to us by Mildred was a pleasantly different experience. Well done Mildred, the whole group enjoyed her information sharing.

Had a lovely wine and brandy tasting (early December 2020) Also provides kosher tasting on request, but do not serve any kosher meals. Restaurant service needs attention though, maybe it was the holiday mood LOL

I was invited to a private family function in their restaurant. This was my first visit to the estate. It is owned by the Back family who understands quality. What I saw whilst driving through the estate after business hours, truly gave me the impressive invitation to return for wine tasting and a day time experience. Their food was very tasty....had whole lamb on the spit and carved when served. Staff were friendly, warm and present. I looked at the normal menu and their prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended.

A good wine estate to visit. The first great thing about this estate is it has a restaurant that serves lots of good dishes wether you are just pickish or need something more substantial. It great to wander around and look at all the vintage wine equipment.. The wines are decent and it is well worth a visit.

Beautiful settings, well worth the visit and reasonably priced wines. The wine tasting was professional and full of interesting information, as well. Tranquil settings and nice clean shopping area. Lovely farm vibe, as you travel through, to reach the wine tasting. Lots of activities as well, on offer

Backsberg has a beautiful venue along with the museum. The service is very friendly and knowledgeable. This was the perfect last stop on the wine tram. The wine and brandy tasting was fun as well.

A beautiful wine estate and worthy of being of visited.

Food, wine and atmosphere is lovely. Service not great.It was Saturday 12 Dec at a babys 1st birthday. We had to stand up and search for waiters to place orders 3 times.We arrived at 12 and got our main meal at 3. Had to leave for airport at 3.30.We will however be back again and give it another try.The wine tasting areas service was wonderful.

Under rated gem of a place with beautiful gardens and in winter a cosy fireplace.Staff friendly and portion size ample.Great kiddies menu!!

There really is no point in having a beautiful venue and employing a manager who has a bad attitude and who is unable to do his job efficiently and with integrity. There is an interesting factor that comes into play here (which I will not even dare to mention at this stage). Hopefully you are able to read between the lines since its a trending topic in SA at the moment. Seems like my fiance and I are not the first ones to fall victim of such terrible service. Weve visited Backsberg after emailing and indicating that we are interested in the venue for our wedding day. We were provided with your venue rates and informed that the prices stipulated in your package is not set in stone and that you are willing to work with our budget if necessary. We responded after visiting Backsberg and have been awaiting a response for over two weeks. Four emails and three phone calls later and yet, no response. On the day that we visited Backsberg, the reception was terrible and Sean made as if he had no idea who we were and he pretended that we did not even have an appointment with him... I wonder why... Only after he saw us.... and after he had confirmed the appointment a few days earlier. Not only was the reception pathetic, while showing us around, we may as well have been in our gym clothing since we were expected to pace through the premises in order to keep up with him. He rushed the site viewing and walked in front of us (with huge distances between us and him - clearly his intention was to get it over and done with and not allow us to have our wedding there)... I wonder why...After the speedy viewing we were told that we could look around on our own, which we did but the few minutes with him left a bad taste in our mouths and led us to read the reviews on Backsberg. Needless to say, there were bad reviews, which referred to Sean and his attitude specifically. Reviews from more than a year ago... Yet, he is still allowed (or maybe even condoned) to carry on with the same prejudice and bad attitude. What a country were living in at a moment, where certain individuals are allowed to treat others a certain way because of the factor I stated earlier, which technically, I am still not mentioning.To end off my somewhat lengthy message, Backsberg your service is pathetic! You need a different manager and people need to know about this and in due time, if things do not change, all will be revealed!My fiance and I are very disappointed, we had high hopes for your venue and the service, clearly way too high!

Backsberg was the 4th wine farm with a restaurant that I contacted and the only one that could accommodate 2 of us on the public holiday, 27/04/2021, with 40min notice, as the other 3 were fully booked. All the Covid checks were in place, sanitiser at all entrances, patrons details and temperature taken. The pricing is reasonable and the food and service good.

Our meals was very well (excellent) presented and delicious. Manager, Sean Louw, and his friendly staff delivers an excellent and professional service. Restuarant is always neat and clean, quick service, its always a pleasure to go there.Thank you for the excellent service and wonderful food.

The wine not great, however the brandy was superb. We were not advised that cheese platters were available, and we have the Entertainment App yet could not eat on it the restaurant ONLY had on offer a buffet for R295 with only 2 meats on offer, chicken and lamb, definitely a disappointment.

Place is very charming, regular wines are nice, black label line ones AMAZING! Although the Marks and Spencer line wines which are served in the testing complimentary with lunch were very mediocre. Lunch was also not that great.

When you drive through from Durbanville on a Friday for a nice pairing just to hear they are out of cheese.. really? Then after the disappointing news we decided to do a normal tasting just hear they are out of the wine we wanted to taste... no man.

In the 1980s i visited this vineyard and had a tour and sampling. For years after i ordered their wines, mainly the cabernet Sauvignon, pinotage and Sharaz with a good supply of the eminently drinkable dry red. A great olace to visit and duperb wines that i have not licated inthe UK yet.

This was one of the most amazing places I went to on my visit to cape town. It felt welcoming, the host had a sense of humour, the wine tasting room layout with the dim lighting and lit candles (okay it was loadshedding) was so exquisite! The chocolate pairing with each type of wines was lovely. The wine prices are reasonable as well. I only regret not buying more wine whilst i was there!

Highly recommend doing their wine and chocolate tasting. Delicious wines and chocolates, the estate is beautiful and staff are very friendly! I usually dont like white wine but their chardonnay is amazing!

We enjoyed cappuccinos on the restaurant veranda overlooking the patio dining area in, which is in dappled shade surrounded by trees and shrubs. The indoors part of the restaurant has an old worldly feel even though it appears to be of modern construction. Our waitress recommended booking a table during the busy summer months.The wine tasting room provides tasting at a counter standing, or seated indoors or outdoors. The staff member helping us is friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. Containers are provided to empty your glass into after tasting. Please do not drink and drive! Wines can be bought by the bottle or case and can be delivered.The small garden is beautifully kept and in a perfect condition. Visitors are allowed to explore the garden. Do not miss the water feature!

Backsberg is a family owned wine farm with a deep value of inclusivity and generosity. It is a beautiful place to relax, eat and enjoy the alfresco lifestyle. Their award-winning wines are incredibly good value for money. This is unpretentious, down-to-earth wine making for everyone to enjoy. The restaurant serves delicious, affordable cuisine right next to the tasting venue. My wife and I were treated incredibly graciously and even invited to see the incredible library stock of vintage wines! I highly recommend a visit.

Had amazing wine and a tasty meal here. I had the lamb salad and my boyfriend had the pasta. Big portion made with fresh ingredients.The service was great too. It was also wonderful sitting in the garden under the trees while sipping on great wine. A superb experience on a hot day:) I highly recommend this place for lunch and tastings.

Backsberg is my absolute favorite wine farm. I love sweet wine and in love with their Kiddush Sweet Red and Late Harvest wines. Hubby loves their Pinotage and Merlot. We visit their tasting room quite often and enjoy lunch in the beautiful garden under the trees. They also delivered wine during Level 3 of lockdown and kept me informed and updated of order constantly!

A friend chose it and told me the burgers were amazing. Unfortunately not the case ,my Lamb burger was 2.5 pieces of Roast lamb slices,the beef burger that another in our group ordered tasted like, as he put put it Frozen burger that you cook out the box . I skipped dessert . If youre looking for a place to drink - yes. Feeling hungry ? Eat before you come so you arent disappointed.

Worst experience ever! The staff were rude and made us feel as though they were doing us a favour! Schaune promised to speak to the supposedly new waitresses and revert back to me, guess what, 3 days later I have heard nothing from her! I was thinking of taking my family to the concert next week but will not, I am never going there again! Such a shame!! If there was a -1 Star rating I would give them!

The Sunday lamb on a spit carvery is amazing. Not cheap, but a really high quality meal. Without overeating we still left so full that we almost felt ill. Well worth the investment in time and money.

Wine tasting at Backsberg Wine Estate, I chose a sweeter wine for tasting. 5 different wines, was an experience. Brandy tasting with cheese is also available. Baught a few bottles for when Im back home.

Great platter (Winelands platter) and good wine to go with it. The staff however could be more professional and friendly as we had to struggle to get any sort of information out of them. Overall nice food and wine and average service

Horrible experience at the restaurant this morning. Nobody in sight when we arrived, eventually a man appeared. Did not greet us...i asked if they have a table available. He replied by asking if we have a booking. We did not. Where after he shook his head and said no. His name is Sean. He was so unfriendly! So rude! I understand we did not have a reservation, but really! We will not be back if this is how one is treated!!!

My friend and I had a wine tasting and while were were next door her husband went to the restuarant and your waitress (..... sorry I forgot her full name ..something ...Ann kindly placed him close to the fire. When we had done our tasting and came over to have lunch..she called the staff and had them move our table for four right by the fireside. Amazing girl. Amazing kind heart..she deserves a raise. The food was amazing and although we waited a short while because there were two large tour tables also being served..we did not mind because the staff are friendly and attentive and we were snug as bugs in a rug by the fireside. My Daughters wedding reception was held at Backsberg on Saturday.On behalf of the Smit and Botha families I would just like to thank Sean and everybody at Backsberg for presenting such a perfect function.The organisation was flawless Sean was hands on involved with his positive smiling personnel making our guest feel special and relaxed.Due to the inclement weather we had to fall back on Seans plan B opting to hold the function in the Cellar(Restaurant plan A).All our guest were seated at a long table a beautiful cellar seen for the candlelight dinner that followed.The dinner was amazing - matching the quality Backsberg wines , the food perfectly prepared and presented !I am just so pleased that my Wife Maggie and my daughter Naomi discovered this Hidden Gem of a restaurant.Nelius SmitStellenbosch.

Visiting from Germany and doing an informal tasting at the counter with Mildred. She told us everything about the wines, the winery and the business. Also she convinced us of 6 different wines, One of them was a lovely red blend with Zinfandel which was quite surprising to find since we havent seen Zinfandel here in Cape Winelands at all. They have such a large variety of wines available, all wines we tasted were lovely and and it was a great and really fun wine tasting experience with Mildred. Unfortunately my husband made the booking in person when we were there in January for my bday, so he had NO cooking clue what their website said... buffets only on Sundays. Horrible experience... had to get in our cars and find somewhere else to have lunch.

Nice wines and brandy for tasting, I forgot to try the cheese or chocolate pairings unfortunately! The food is great, I had their buffet lunch which had whole roasted lamb. Of their wines I liked most the pinneau which is a mix of their chenin and brandy, delicious. Atmosphere is very nice with a beautifully planted garden. The first time I came here was on horse back, from the full day ride at cape winelands riding.

As SA residents we are extremely shocked by the rude behavior of the staff at the restaurant - we were not aware that we should make bookings months in advance to enjoy a late afternoon for wine and lunch, at your restaurant. We were not greeted in the first place after we had greeted 3 waiters, and only told rudely by a very unprofessional female waitress that there is no space and we cant join for lunch at all, whereafter all 3 just turned their backs on us and walked away. We are really dissapointed that they did not even suggest any other possible options. Worst treatment.

Waiter added in R15 extra pobably for his tip. Then after buying R1000 worth of wine they still charged for the tasting. Since last year they really went backwards. They never used to do this.

Worst experience ever! Very disappointed by the service from Sean. Unable to give me a specific time slot to view the venue. Greeted in a very rude way and didnt assist us to view this as a wedding venue option. I emailed him to ask for a specific time to view and he just repeatedly told me the times they close. So assumed this meant anytime, but then unwilling to assist at all when we got there??

Lovely place, lovely people and the food is to dine for. Look out for the loviest waitress Huibrecct or as she is called Huibie. She is the most adorable person we have ever met in a restaurant.

We visited this estate on a Sunday, they offered an all you can eat buffet. It was devine, afterwards we attended the wine tasting. The wine was so good we bought 48 bottles.

After visiting your wine farm in March and enjoying your really fabulous starters (we had one of each) we decided to visit again last week. As we noticed your menu has changed and we decided to sit inside this time as the weather was a bit chilly. My husband ordered Yorkshire Duck and I the lamb shank. Also a bottle of wine. The wine was served in an ice bucket with out being opened and we were not offered a taste. The main course finally arrive and what a disappointment. The Yorkshire puddings were dry and stale. The duck which was served with the Yorkshire puddings didnt even look like duck and tasted terrible. My lamb shank was fine and the veggies were also very nice but the potatoes tasted as if they had been warmed up serveral times. Our waitress was un-attentive and we felt that we were keeping the staff from leaving even thought it was only 3.30 in the afternoon. Im sorry to say this had not been a good experience and we will consider very carefully before we return to you farm.
