I was very disappointed.The venue is very beautiful and stylish but the pizza isnt good. The pizza base is unremarkable and the tomato based sauce is missing. At least the cheese is good. I wouldnt eat it again. Perhaps the pasta is better but I can only remark on what I ordered.The lava cake was good but not the best around.

Nice chilled place... loved the breeze. Ordered a medium rare sirloin and it was more medium well, but hey, what restaurant gets it right, right!

We had a wonderful evening dining out at Sotto Sopra. The manager was so welcoming and saw to our every need. They have an extensive wine list and the staff are on hand to suggest pairings. My partner had the steak for his main - it was succulent and perfectly seasoned. I had the kingklip which was simply divine. We would like to go back soon to try out the winter menu.

As an Italian , I can really say these guys are doing it properly , every place that serves Italian food in joburg smothers pasta in sauce and that is not the way we do it.Sophisticated flavors and great service.Bravo

This restaurant has a lot of things going for them, nice vibe, location superb and the food is great, tasty and fresh. Dining outing for me is about experience and the team did a great job in delivering a lovely experience.

Took two of the most fussiest people in my family to Sotto Sopra. And all I can say is WOW! From the friendly and very helpful waiters, to the management, the ambience and not forgetting the INCREDIBLE food! Modern Italian! Now our favorite spot! A MUST for any foodie in Johannesburg. I would even go there from anywhere else in South Africa. Needless to say - fussy eaters were VERY happy and they want to go again. Well done Sotto Sopra Team!

Nothing short of perfect , the amount of flavor and care that goes into every dish is very impressive.pasta was perfection , prawns perfect .desserts were impeccable we ordered all the desserts on the menu.never knew this place existed , but now that i do , i wont be going to modena anymore.this is true Italian and out the box thinking when it comes to food

Great experience at SottoSopra !!!Excellent service, the food was delicious, lovely presented, it was much more than a typical Italian restaurant.The decor is lovely, a little bit of pop art on the wall and quality decorations made the experience greater.We arrived as a group of 10 and got good advises on wines and dishes to suit everyone taste. Cocktails were also wonderful !Definitely, one of the best meal this city has to offer with a ++ for the stunning desserts !

Had an absolutely fabulous dining experience here. Service was superb, but even better was the food. The fillet was to die for, a beautiful mix of flavours. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing pasta! Ive ordered a few pastas off their summer menu and enjoyed every single one of them! Props to the team at Sotto for a great experience every time.

The service was excellent and the decor and atmosphere were great, however the food didnt taste anything special especially for the price - my lasagne was literally not much bigger than my Samsung S8 cellphone, and for the R165 it cost I could have gotten far better value at an alternative restaurant. Ill not be using this restaurant again. Sotto Sopra did later confirm that the lasagna portion size is 250g - whether or not that is reasonable for the price is upto you.

Absolutely shocking service. Not at all surprised that the place was deserted, given the level of service, poor quality of the food and absolute lack of leadership. If you are looking for a decent meal with a reasonable degree of service, Id certainly visit any of the other establishments in the immediate vicinity of this restaurant.

Friendly staff and good decor but overpriced..water costing 90 bucks a bottle is unusual for a place that isnt a fine dining establishment or hotel and for an italian place I expected better pizza, the one I had was uber dry..lacked proper tomato base... Toilets are very nice.

We had a lovely wine tasting on the 7th of June, Covid protocols followed to the t. Great service, great food. Owner, waiter were accommodating went beyond my expectations in terms of service. Pizzas were phenomenal. Very impressive well done Sotto Sopra.

Terrible experience overall! Pathetic service and management. An Italian restaurant that couldn’t make a pizza because “the base was sticking”. Would never recommend this place to anyone especially with so many other wonderful Italian restaurants in jhb.

Absolutely one of the best fine dinning experiences ive had in Johannesburg, the food is amazing the service is on point and the cocktails are phenomenal ,i would recommend this dinning experience to absolutely to everyone but specially for those Italian foodies out there !. Hands down

WONDERFUL place !SottoSopra is added to my list of restaurants to go and go again !Love the food ! Waiters were super pro and helpful.The scenery is magical with a lovely terrace.The selection of wines is great. My pizza was delicious and my husband dishes from starters to desserts were delectable.Nice to know we can have this quality of food and service in Joburg.Fancy and not too pricy, they will see me again !

Sotto Sopra is a beautiful restaurant. The dishes are beautifully presented and show much love and creativity. We had the vegetarian Lasagna and Cannelloni and for dessert the Tonka Bean Panna cotta and the Tiramisu which is presented in the most unexpectedly beautiful way. Everything was amazing, the dining experience, the ambience and the staff are absolutely exceptional. Its a must visit and well definitely be back soon!

Sotto Sopra has delicious cocktails. I love the Hugo, Dando and Kir Royale. Service is aways attentive.

1.Considering we were a table of 16, we were given 1 waiter. This was one of the contributing factors for the chaos. We ordered bottles of water but didnt get glasses, then would ask for glasses but it would take another 5-10 minutes. Then we would ask for ice and wait another 5-10min.  Then we would ask for cutlery, which would again take 5-10 min. We would ask for side plates, but this would take 5-10 min. We would ask for cocktails and then they would forget something. We would ask to order something from the menu but would have to go to the main part of the restaurant and call a waiter because we were so frequently left unattended to. It was an absolute mess and we were constantly left unattended to and waiting for something from the wait staff. We did not rock up at your restaurant unannounced, we had made this booking well in advance, why were we not given adequate wait staff to support such a large table?2. The waiter took the order from our table in piecemeal, which meant half the table got their order at a different time to the other table and we ended up eating separately. Does this sound like something you would do if you all came together to a party?3. Half the table finished their orders and the other 8 people still had not received their food, the waiter told us they were just plating up and it will be there there shortly, 20 minutes later, another 4 meals were provided. 20 minutes to plate 4 pasta meals? How gullible does your staff think we are, obviously there was some issue in the kitchen - be honest and just say that! None-the-less given the wait time, we started to eat despite the fact that all the meals were not yet at the table despite placing all these orders together.4. At this point we were still 2 meals short, the manager comes out and announces that there was a problem with the banting pizza bases which were sticking to the oven and the 2 outstanding meals could not be made unless we were prepared to wait another 20 min. This was honestly unacceptable! We had been waiting so long for our food, we were lied to about the 20 minutes to plate and now we were told we would not get any further meals for the 2 people remaining? The irony was the other half of our table had ordered these banting bases and those were prepared and delivered without issue, why the sudden issue now? Why lie and tell us that you were plating when you actually had a problem in your kitchen? If the banting bases were such an issue, offer to make another normal base pizza so 2 people dont leave there hungry instead of just saying it cant be done! Are you not an Italian restaurant, is pizza not part of your basic service offering, how can you call yourself an italian establishment that cannot make pizza? I am absolutely flabbergasted!At this point we vocalised our extreme dissatisfaction and the manager and the waitron staff then elected to retreat and to not return to our table until the time we got up looking for them to ask for the bill.Your team ruined our night and then they were too embarrassed to come back to apologise or see if they could salvage the experience, offer us a dessert, or coffees - nothing. they literally disappeared and only appeared again when we looked for them when it was time to pay the bill.The owner contacted me after I sent the email with the details above and offered for our party to return with the other 15 guests for Sotto sopra to rectify our miserable experience, after much convincing, our family agreed to go back, the next day, the owner retracted the offer. Excellent customer service sotto sopra! Will never return and after how you as the owner handled this, I wish you luck because youre not going to stay in business very long with this approach.

We ordered the prawn risotto which was great! Starter was good too. But service was really slow and unattentive. We eventually decided to get the bill and go home as we waited to order dessert for 25 minutes. The restaurant could do better at following Covid protocols. The single seating tables are less that half a metre apart with no ventilation in the restaurant as the doors are closed. Wont go back unfortunately.

Sloppy battered whitebait, tasteless pizza, 750ml mineral water R90 only imported, no local bottled water because its an Italian restaurant we were told, service was too attentive but friendly nevertheless. Will definitely not return, this was my second visit the first was even worse, this chef/restaurateur is a pretender.

Honestly overpriced restaurant with average food.Risotto bolognese balls were average.Pizza not too bad. Have had better.Tasted a friends lasange, my homemade lasagne is better.Tiramisu, dreadful. Honestly an insult to true Italians if that dessert was served to them.Basically it was cream with finger biscuits (not even soaked in liquer) with chocolate shavings on top and a little dustinf of coffee.Friends also said the same when they tasted theirs.Much better Italian restaurants out there with better prices.They just charging because of the area and clientele.

What a wonderful experience, the restaurant just oozes a good feel . The food is simply amazing , the desserts are out of this world . The management and staff are on point. Simply a must visit. The restaurant was something that caught my eyes whilst travelling and it absolutely delivered. The spirit and passion of each dish encapsulates what you would expect from an authentic Italian dish. I personally selected the Tagliatelle Ragu as my main, this dish was bursting with flavours start to finish, which was complimented by a beautiful bottle of Laborie Chardonnay and completed by a Chocolate Fondant. The staff team was also incredibly welcoming and warming throughout the visit, especially the GM!

Thank our lucky stars we found this place through a friend who has already been here. It was the best meal we have had in joburg. I had the fillet, it was the most tender and mouth watering steak I’ve had in JHB. Even better than upstairs restaurant :). My fiancé had the Vongole pasta , tastes like Italy! The desserts are actually out of this world. What an experience. Thank you jared and Justin and the team.

I had dinner at Sotto and the food was just amazing, the setting is a modern twist on Italian design, music is chilled and relaxed. I found that if you add alcohol to the virgin cocktails, it turns into something magical. Mostly what made this restaurant special, was how they chose to deal with a mixed up order, it was handled exceptionally well. The true measure of success in a service based environment is how issues are handled, lets face it, its bound to happen at some stage. Well done guys, Ill be back without a doubt!

After seeing a 4.9 on google had to try it. Just been there with 9 family members for my wife’s birthday. What a disappointment 3.0 is more realistic. Service was slow. Drinks 30 minutes. Some dishes were unavailable. Coffee but no sweetener... half the deserts also out of stock due to Valentines..... two days after... wow maybe don’t open on a Sunday.

Just opened. Should appeal to young trendies with its great decor and casual modern Italian fare with a focus on fresh. The spaghetti seafood was outstanding and the poached pear with a caramel mouse and sesame seeds was fabulous! Noise levels are acceptable. Staff attentive. Looking forward to trying it again.Reasonable pricing for this calibre of food and location. Corkage for the Saxenburg Shiraz 2007 (soft and lovely) we brought along was a cheap R35.

What an unpleasant experience. Mediocre food & terrible service staff. Dirty glassware, unkempt furniture. I truly can’t get over how rude my waiter was. Oh, to be the patron fortunate enough to experience misdirected personal anger — a true delight.
