A visit to Constitution Hill will definitely make you appreciate the sacrifices of those that fought for the freedom we are enjoying now. I couldnt believe some of the most inhumane things our freedom fighters went through at the hands of Apartheid. It was heartbreaking.💔😭 Salute to all those who fought for the freedom of this great nation. God Bless South Africa.
I took my daughter to Constitutional Hill as a birthday outing, she loved it! The day was filled with bitter sweet memories of how far people of colour have come. It is a lesson for the born frees to appreciate what they have and to know that they need to carry it forward and do better with what they have.In remembrance of those who fought , let their efforts not have been in vain!
Had an awesome experience, David the archist there gave me a tour and got to see their collection in the archive.
A very special place in terms of our country and its past. Important for as many South Africans of all races, young and old to experience it.I was a bit disappointed in the state of some of the facilities on site, but then with the way the countrys finances have been misused over the past 20 or so years, there is probably not much budget left to maintain such an important location. The Constitutional Court is a pillar of the countrys judiciary and should also be more well maintain. With that said, I still highly recommend a visit to Constitution Hill.
Thanks so much for everything you done for my family
The place is very neat, the staff offered us good assistance in what we required.
I have been staying close to Constitution Hill for the past 11 years but I was not aware of the history it holds... actually I was but I had not imagined the depth of what is in there.....I had the best tour guide however I forgot his name....The information behind those walls is emotional and powerful. The highest court of South Africa is there which is the Constitutional Court.... Listening to how the building was built, every piece has a meaning...let me not give too much info....please go there and you will come back full of knowledge of our history...
I drove all the way to Johannesburg arrived there at around 11/12 and I was told the museum was closed,AT 11AM????? I couldnt even believe it, I was already exhausted from driving. Update your website with times and the rest! Please man! Ag!
These pictures dont tell the story but a picture is worth a thousand words. Imagine being imprisoned because youre not in agreement with the political party, but being outspoken will put you here. 37 years ago this place closed 8 🚿 for over 2k prisoners of you werent the cell boss you werent showering. I would love if walls could speak... touching the same walls Ghandi and Mandela is something out of this world.
The Kidneys is just the right venue for the soulfood Expressive Movement we danced both Saturday and Sunday
Great place to visit and learn more about how arphathied prisoners were humiliated and stripped off the human dignity..u need to be strong when you visited this place..😭😭
If you are South African and have some time to see the spot where the Concourt was built, do go. A warning, the tour for 1 hour is brutal. You may discover facts that are upsetting. But the guides are amazing, and they present in a way that can help understand and reflect on just how far we have come as South Africans. The tour shows the former prison at the base of the building and ends with a view of the interior of the Constitutional Court. The highest court in the land for Constitutional matters.
A really worthwhile visit. Our tour guide was insightful and worked well with the group of gr 11 students I brought along. The court has a been thoughtfuly designed and the history of the hill is both humbling and stirring. It has been beautifully persevered. South Africans and visitors alike should make a stop here to grow a bit in their own humanity.
Loved this place as I also love history. For school groups they offer an experience whereby the learners can live the past as they can experience the cells and being locked up and also get to know the food that the prisoners ate etc. They have a tour through Constitution Hill and then also a bus tour if you want to experience that. You might be satisfied upon quenching the thirst for knowledge, but there is a small restaurant by the old fort where you can quench your actual thirst 😁. This place is really filled with history ranging from apartheid, freedom fighters, women in the struggle, military developments from Paul Krugers time etc. At least visit once to experience it.
I dont hate it, I just saw it in passing
This is such an important part of South African history and I definitely recommend that everyone visits this place. Its a bridge between the past and the future for the country. Having said that, the jails are also quite a sad place when you consider the atrocities that were committed there. Was quite surprised that there is also a Gandhi and Mandela exhibit. The Constitutional Court is magnificent. It is closed due to refurbishment until Feb 2019.
Its so rich in history, a beautiful place to be. Many history lessons to learn from this place. Getting a tour guide would prove best useful to take a tour around the surrounding buildings. The City Sight Seeing Bus services has one of its stops in this area. There is so much history to be learnt, a really great place to come with family for a booked tour. Otherwise, one is allowed to freely roam around the area to l view solely without a tour guide.
Must say this is one of the best museums that Ive been to. Do it with a tour guide, its worth it. Very interactive and is amazing to be able to SEE the history
It an educational space and tourism space. It is a safe place to be. Friendly staff and nice and interesting historic surroundings.
Very good place. But very chilly. Make sure you pack a nice sweater. Very proud be Indian. After seeing Mandela Gandhi memorial.
Its a walk in museum you walk and image what its was during a period of great trials and tribulations for all who were imprisoned there.
Loved the history I learned here
I had lots of fun here. The tours were very educational and our tour guide was well informed. We were allowed to take pictures with our phones but not cameras. This place is rich with South Africas prison history.
A LUTA CONTINUA! A humbling, heartening, and indescribably beautiful experience. We did a walking tour of the old prison complex and found it to be very educational, extremely well-designed with a well-constructed flow for visitors to follow. Viewing old prison cells and learning more about the day-to-day life of the former prisoners was a poignant and deeply emotional experience. Loved the beautiful art on display in the main building, and was a particularly big fan of the amazing text art by Garth Walker on the face of the main building. Walking along the rampart walls offered a unique view of Johannesburg. An incomparable experience. Highly recommended to anyone who calls themselves South African.
Beautiful place, need to come here with my kids, loved the history lesson through the sightings.
A great place ...Gandhiji was prisoned here for 7 months after his law education in South Africa
It was closed over the New Year but we could look at the Flame of Democracy and at the Courts Doors... with our Carved Rights of Humanity.Horrible to think of all the happenings in the Jail.Appreciative of the tight security in the area.It is an experience to ...
Its a nice and comfortable place to be
Vital and pivotal part of SA cultural social and political history. Emotional and equally inspiring visit to remind us all
Thank you so much Kgotlelelo for the tour you provided on 13 February 2021 at 2pm. You were so knowledgeable of what you were talking about. I will definitely come back for the full tour in the near future
Good tour to learn about history. Very engaging with a good guide and also very realistic depictions of past conditions of the prison.
There is a great wealth of information about the history of South Africa with regards to political freedom fighters in prison. Must spend at least 2 hours to explore
Awesome place to visit , a must if youre in Jozi
Good reminder that we are all humans, we must respect each other at all times.Combining yesterday with tomorrow was a good experience.
The best experience ever
Loved it. Very educational, i recommend walking around with a guide so that you don’t miss out on information and get an in depth history of the place.
Beautiful place to host events. Had a lovely time.
Such a beautiful place to being back to life the suffering of the apartheid regime in south africa. A beautiful place of ruins, heritage and culture
I was traumatized by the events of the past but Im glad I went there. I really do hope the South African flame of democracy never die.
Very well taken care of. The tour is extremely informative and good value for your money
Always a great time visiting Con Hill. Still very relevant and significant.
Interesting place... a little scary at night...Next time with proper planning and sunlight
Great place for history. Lots of fixtures on Gandhi, dont know why, and a parallel story of him and Mandela, why again I dont know. But great seeing the past and the future together
Very informative, you can walk around by yourself or take a guide. Guide tours can be lenghtly for younger children, but you can always wonder away from the tour and enjoy it in your own time.
Really cool tour to get some insight into the city of Joburg! Great little coffee shop here too. They also have art shows going on showcasing some of the best of SA’s talent!
Open to public...great tour guides
ConHill is part of our heritage, there is a lot to learn about our History...one can tour the Womens Jail section. Most importantly the place can be used for meetings & events...check them out!
Fantastically insightful museum! I’d suggest spending about 2h here if you want to read everything
A thought provoking and painful walk through history. Brings both sadness of the past and hope for the future
The tour was absolutely amazing! I come here so often but each time I go, the experience is new. Brenda did an incredible job of informing us and engaging with us. A tour Id recommend in a heartbeat
Important memories saved here.
Sometimes to really value where we are, we need to reflect back in time. Constitution Hill pays tribute to those who have helped to raise the collective consciousness of our Nation. Allocate about 2hrs for a full tour.
Its a good place to visit if you want to learn about the history of South Africa. Its sad to see what black women had to go through in the women prison and how it was for some of them having to give birth in prison.
Extremely powerful tour of the historic prison where Mandela, Ghandi, and many others were kept, ending with a visit to the current seat of judicial power. A guided tour is recommended.
Youll be able to learn more about political history of south africa. The prison is really shocking but youll be conscious about what was happening back then. Its really worth it the R80 lol
Learnt a lot and was family friendly accomodated everyone
Another valuable puzzle piece in South Africas history, and absolutely worth the visit for the history that has occurred here and the Constitutional Court. Second time that we have been unable to do the full tour (no available guide) but did the highlight tour instead. Guide was excellent, quirky and interesting. Museums themselves are a mixture of really well put together areas with great displays number 4 & 5, one section of Old Fort cells, ramparts and Mandela cell in old Fort, and then other areas needing some love, with random furniture stored in some cells or out in public spaces, Constitutional Court a great visit to stand in the countries highest court and see the attention to detail put into its design and artwork. Ran out of time for the womens prison.
Neat place with a very rich South African prison history
It was outright beautiful. Was there for the BaselineFest19. Got to watch 2 of my fave artists perform live (Asa&Mr. Eazi),listen, I had an out-of-body experience. Infact, all the artists were great. Not to mention the food, the people, the atmo... All beautiful man.
Was a very informative session and I enjoyed
Obviously a place so rich with history.
Good, although some displays have weathered and could do with a bit of a face lift.
Good historical palace, although a heavy atmosphere.
Love how the information has been displayed and how they didnt temper with the buildings and preserved them in the state they were in. Its very informative, if you keen on learning part of our history with actual landmarks of what happened, you need to go there youll feel like you in that era as you go and everything is being explained to you.
I enjoyed breakfast at Khujos hosted there .Beautiful experience, beautiful energy and amazing people
It reminds every South African of the history we had, and educates people from other countries how democracy was attained.
Very shocking reality! Good tour of the prision. Went there as part of the red bus sightseeing tour, and its one of the stops where you should get off. Our guode Brenda was very knowledgable and talked with loads of passion and inspiration. Dont miss out the film.
If youre looking at learning part of the South African history this place is a good visit
Beautiful judicial heritage. Worth visiting
Loved It, Very Educational and always good to know the history of your country.
We were guided through this harrowing exhibition of old prison precinct and the Constitutional Court by a knowledgeable and sensitive guide. The injustices of the past balanced by the transparency of the new.
I learnt a lot. I advise parents to take their kids there so they can know where we come from as a country
A little unsafe but great for a artist eyes
This place is worth a visit. You are guided by the local guide there who gives you the detailed view of the past. You are driven back in the history and after hearing the treatment given to the prisoners and feeling it around you get goosebumps.
Great place to learn about South African history
Site of tragedy now a place we can find our cultural roots
I went there for Basha Uhuru freedom festival, and food & craft. The event was well organized and security was visible.
Good place to visit and learn about the old prison and apartheid government cruelty. You also get to see the constitutional court.
Constitutional hill , JohannesburgI visited constitutional hill in March 2018.This place is impressive and I strongly suggest to visit if you are in either South Afrikas history, human rights or building constitution. It is a partly a museum of an old „famous“ prison, partly the new constitutional high court. From the top of the walls you can overlook the old center of JoBurg. While this is not the prison Mandela was jailed, Ghandi was - as well as many friends going along with Mandela. The museum has conserved parts of the old jail and offers interesting and informative video, picture and text guidance. It is not text-overloaded, very well made.Part of the prison was torn down and the new constitutional high court was build at the historic site. You can visit the court and listen to session in the lobby. It hosts exhibitions related to the sites history, as well. It was partly build from the old prison bricks. The region is a bit tricky. I wouldn‘t rate it unsafe during daytime, but poverty everywhere. So if you are not that expirienced, take the hop on hope of bus, uber or a cab in and out.
A place that gives you goosebumps. A celebration of victory of justice and humanity over oppression and inequality.
Great place to visit to get done of the history that makes us proudly South Africans
Free entrance today on Heritage Day. I cant really find words to adequately describe what to experience here. Its very well worth a visit. Do combine with Red City Bus Tour if you can. South Africas Highest Court being the Constitutional Court is situated here as well and it is a truly impressive design.
History runs deep here. Stories of Nelson Mandela, Ghandi and other opposition fighters. Good and knowledgeable tour guides
