We went to Milkwood for breakfast. Upon arriving, there was no-one at the entrance taking Covid precautions. We found a table and sat down. Eventually the waiter came, didnt bother to wipe down the table for us either. Extremely grumpy and unwelcoming. We received our drinks order and placed our food order. For the next 40 minutes, we waited for food and the waiter didnt even come to the table to explain there were delays or ask if we wanted to order more drinks. I got up to look for the owner or manager to address the poor service, to find there was no owner or manager available, the head waiter (1 of 2) available was in charge. I explained to him that we were disappointed in the service and went back to the table to wait. The waiter came out again and I ordered a cold drink. About 5 minutes later the food finally arrived, but no cold drink. After 10 minutes it had still not arrived, so I got up to go and fetch one myself. Even after complaining about the bad service, we were still being treated poorly. We had to go inside to ask the waiter for our bill and while I was trying to pay the owner arrived. I tried to explain the issues to her, but she lashed out at me from the onset. Told me I was rude. She has gone on to call me obnoxious and a bully. Why were we upset? Simply because of bad service, instead of addressing the issues, the owner rather decides to address this by insisting it is her patrons fault. I strongly recommend you do not visit this place, it will end in disappointed. Bad service, poor value for money on portions. Owner with a very bad attitude
We were forced to pay for off wine! After being presented with a bottle of wine (this wine had turned yellow and I said to him I’m worried about it) the waiter opened the bottle to let us taste. The wine tasted off and we asked for it to be returned, he refused and said that the bottle was open now? After some discussion he agreed to bring us another bottle of wine to enjoy with our lunch but refused to take the first from the table, this wine stood on our table for the entire luncheon, we asked him several times to remove the wine as we now had two bottles of wine at the table, awkward. When he presented the bill first was on the bill, I objected to which he commented aggressively that he would pay for it, at the till he told the owner who proceeded to make a seen at volume. I approached her to as what she was shouting about and explain my experience, she Cleary did not care about the situation or to resolve the situation as she tried to explain that French wine was also yellow.I ended up paying for a glass form the first as she said she could then sell the rest of the bottle to some other patrons. Nice! This bottle had stood on my table in the son for at least two hours.Pity it’s a lovely spot with but bad service.
Eat all you can of the view, because that’s all you’ll be having. You have to go to lengths to flag down waiters, aren’t kept up to date on your order, their all day breakfast isn’t actually all day and your order never arrives. We eventually left to go to a different restaurant. The view is great though! For adventurous folk keen to give it a try, perhaps bring a camping tent, trail mix and a sleeping bag. That way you can overnight and perhaps be lucky enough to get some food.
Beautiful view. Good seating inside and oudside on two covered wooden decks.Good spot for a quick coffee & cake, lunch or an afternoon drink with friends...Menu well priced.
Tranquil setting, good service, excellent food! We arrived after 2.15 and waitron informed us kitchen closed at 2.30. We placed our order and the food was well prepared despite lateness of the day.
What a disappointing experience. The Indian inspired menu should never have happened - whole overpowering spices, terrible dry chicken thighs, underseasoned everything. The roti was an uncooked, oily disaster.
Friendly staff. Efficient service. Beautifull spot on beach
I always wanted to try this hidden restaurant in Onrus. The welcome was very friendly and the staff went out of their way to make it comfortable and hospitable. The menu has something for everyone and I choose the Soup of the Day. It was hearty and homemade. The flavours blended well. The freshly baked bread was a pleasant surprise in quality, taste and presentation. The butter served with a butter paper cover was 5 star. My main meal was Battered Hake with chops and salad. The presentation was once again excellent. The salad had a very tasty creamy sauce which worked well with the fresh greens. The chips was well cooked as well as the fish. I noticed that most people enjoyed their dishes as they were telling their partners quite loudly so. The wine list is well balanced with some of the best local wines and beer featuring. The dessert menu was extremely tempting offering a wide selection of freshly baked cakes, slices, and desserts. The Red Cappuccino was excellent at the end of the meal. Art lovers can buy some art work on display all in the range of R1000+. They also serve the best local beer - a lager The Old Harbour Beer.
Fresh food, great coffees, beers and also something for the kids! We kind of took over the place for about an hour (5 kids went with us), but we all had a great time. The waffles and the double gold Old Harbour Lager were absolutely on point. Keep it up, Milkwood!
The worst experience EVER!! Not even worth 1 star. Atrocious service to say the least. 3 waiters over a long weekend with a full restaurant = seriously BAD management. Coffee arrived cold after waiting approximately 40 minutes and breakfast took over an hour to arrive thereafter (arrived in drips and drabs, no condiments, no cutlery) and toast only appearing after breakfast was just about finished! What a pity that such a gem of restaurant position on the sea front would deliver such shoddy service. I will never recommend or revisit the Milkwood until there is either a new owner or new management who would TAKE PRIDE in what they offer to the public (who actually keep their doors open during these difficult and trying times).
Beautiful setting, excellent service, good food... What more can one ask for 😉?
Was terribly disappointed with the quality of our seafood platter! Celebrated my sisters 50th birthday but food was so dry and overcook and when we called in the manager she just listened and walked off. Driving from Cape Town for this? Not visiting The Milkwood Restaurant again, sadly😏
Great food with a great view. Right next to the lagoon. If you’re a parent it’s a great spot to keep an eye over your kids in the lagoon. Cocktails lacks a bit in presentation, but still manages to do the trick. Nice and comfy indoor next to the fireplace when it’s cold or during winter months. The staff are in general quite friendly and the food of constant quality. Their deep-fried seafood platter is not too bad...
Great food, great viee, slightly slow service but understandable due to popularity.
The setting is beautiful but UNFORTUNATELY that was all. Even the manager was non responsive
Such a disappointment. Owner does not deserve to have this business, she is doing all her patrons and staff and injustice. She simply has no pride in this establishment.
What a hidden gem. Fantastic views. Delicious food-- yummy. Superb helpful staff
Absolutely the best lemon meringue in Hermanus plus a lovely hide out in a quiet garden far away from the touristy appearance- good personal attendance and service
Beautiful sea view. Portion sizes far too big. Special Sunday lunch very reasonably priced but arrived luke warm. Burger patty was in halves?? Very basic menu.
Great place in an unbelievable setting, between sea view, river and mountains
Lovely place to have breakfast overlooking the river and the see
Terrible experience!Poor service.Extremely poor quality of food.Fish and chips: Thick Thick dough small piece of fish fried burned in old oil. R120Calamari and rice:Extremely small portion of calamari. Rice - did not have any spices. Not even salt!!! R130.It was a total waste of money. So disappointed...Complete rip off...
Lovely place with awesome view!
Delectable food, fast and friendly service and an amazing view. We ordered the Fish and Chips and Calamari and Chips - it was very tasty. We felt quite lucky to be served by Lucky, our server ;) and then we ended this amazing experience with the best Lemon & Poppy-seed muffin weve ever tasted. All the reviews that say they waited long for service is most likely during peak season and those people are entitled/impatient who cant wait for more than 10 minutes for their food to arrive. Give this place a try - even if you wait a bit longer, just enjoy the views and know that your food will be worth the wait :)
Was totally surprised at the poor quality cappuccino served in a white hospital coffee cup...
Not so positive. Sloww service, wierd food.
Wonderful view of the beach and ocean. Good selection on the menu. We had the Calamari and Hake; it was good, but a little oily to my liking. Thick batter. Great vibe.
Excellent food & good service at a very reasonable price. Will be back.
Lovely situated, good food, good vibes. Friendly people
The food is always delicious just slow service sometimesBut they say good things take time
Amazing location but only had coffee there. Good coffee.
Such a pity that our experience was negative because this restaurant has one of the best settings & views in the whole of Hermanus.... where else can one get a sea view and such direct access to the beach for a stroll after a good meal? The service was unfortunately dismal. We made a booking for 11:30am & arrived on time. No one greeted us at the door upon arrival, despite numerous wait staff walking past us & promptly ignoring us, even after trying to get their attention. Eventually the manager said we would have to wait a while for a table, despite having booked. Once seated our waiter (who was wearing a mask as per COVID regulations) proceeded to remove his mask every time he talked to us, which entirely defeats the purpose of the mask at all. Took ages to get access to a menu and was almost impossible to flag down any waiter, and no smiles to be seen. Two of us ordered Eggs Benedict, which was very tasty, had ample helpings of delicious Hollandaise sauce - a real winner. Unfortunately others ordered the Chicken, Bacon & Brie sandwich which was bone dry and had hardly any brie at all. Orange juices and coffee were good, however served in tiny glasses/ mugs. Good service would have really turned this experience around as the setting of this restaurant is such a gem and the prices are reasonable on the whole. Would like to come back for the Eggs Benedict & hopefully have a better service experience next time...
Beautiful and peaceful. GREAT SERVICE!
I was very disappointed with the service. Very limited menu. We were told they didnt have chicken and when I wanted to order a plate of chips I was told I can only order chips with a dish they do not just serve chips on its own
The walk and liveliness of the real world with lots of holiday makers. Seems like we were living life again! Great location!
A little hidden gem
Awesome view on the beach. Very good food.
Beautiful view and delicious food
So nice to sit on the deck and watch the waves. Food is great and service is very good.
Fast service and food portions were very good.Fantastic views. Love the outside seating area.
The best bacon buttie ever. Great coffee and really good service.
Seafood platters for 2 was delicious and children enjoyed the burgers and service was good i definitly will go again
Went to Milkwood for breakfast Saturday morning 17 July 2021 and had thé worst service ever !!! Waited for an hour for a food and no hygiene protocols in place !! Stay away !!!
Waited for a very long time to be served, at one point asked a waiter passing by to please take our order, to which he agreed to return promptly. He never did, and we waited some more, thus resulting in us leaving as we were becoming increasingly frustrated. There was a group of people that arrived after we did, who was then promptly served almost just as they arrived. We were sitting in full view on the top deck, and actually saw waiters passing glances at us. I understand if the waiters were busy, yet they did not disclose that fact with us
Went for breakfast for my girlfriends birthday and had a totally forgettable experience. Bad service and absolutely terrible value for money. Had a R50 toasted sandwich that looked like a 2 year old made and a R30 250ml orange juice.
Beautiful view with good food.
Great food and great staff!
Love the milkwood well done Carol Joe and all staff
Great spot for Summer months
Great spot friendly waiters nice plate of food
Bit run down, but pleasantly good food.
Excellent service, great food, wonderful view
Very good food, helpful waiter, amazing views.
Good value for money. Their desserts seems quite popular
Awesome place, awesome setting!! But the service or rather lack thereof is pathetic!!! And it doesn’t seem to get better....☹️
After being disappointed by the service a couple of years ago, we decided to give it another go for afternoon coffee. Unfortunately we were more disappointed than before. Poor, unprofessional and slow service. From what I gather from previous complaints here, the owner will probably pass the buck back to the customer, and thats exactly what we experienced today. Such a pity as there are so few options in this town.
Unfortunately for the 3rd time weve learned our lesson, to not go this restaurant again. The one star is purely for its beautiful setting. The isues thet we had was taken up with the staff(a young guy that was so arrogant with me, that I actually didnt know how to react to) and manager (who was not any better than the waiter, and was just ready to defend themselves? ) We where absolutely appalled and shocked on how they handled it.....It could have been done in such a different and much better way!Milkwood, please dont comment and again with all the other bad ratings, try and defend yourself.... I want to say learn from it, but it seems that wont happen either..
Waiters was awesome great service all a round food was great aswell
Had lunch their yesterday. No one bothered to welcome or seat us and the fish was a piece of rubber. Come on people. You don’t deserve that contract whoever rents it to you. Give it to someone who cares about client service and who can prepare a simple dish like fish and chips
