The Hike up to West Peak is moderate. There is a section just before you go over the top that is not clearly marked and one could go up and over two ways. One way calls for scrambling up a thin crevice which I dont recommend at all as it is crumbling and very dangerous. I think people have used it too many times as it is more direct. However, the other way requires going around which appears to be leading in the opposite direction, but it does zigzag back and over the top. It is not much longer and is much safer.Plenty of water is needed. You can do this hike there and back within 5-6 hours. The walk once youre ontop continues up until you get to the summit.Reward yourself with lunch and gaze at the amazing 360° views all around. Its spectacular. There are a few hairy points and one does need to be cautious. Wear proper hiking shoes and take it slowly when youre on the side going up as there are a few drops. There are a few sections you may need to do some climbing with arms and legs and if you have a fear of heights - some bum sliding, but otherwise its fine.
It was my first time summiting the peak. Went up very light with half a bottle of water and two oranges. Shouldve taken more water and more fruit. Total journey is about 14.5km from start to finish, took me 2hrs to peak summit and another 2.5hrs to descent. I used mostly my hands on the rocks and boulders going up. I struggled a lot going down as my legs started to give in. I will take a walking stick next time for the descent. Overall fantastic experience.
Takes about 2h30mins to the top for an average person, 1h30mins back to the car park.Good variety of vegetation, many indigenous plants. Abundant bird life and the birds arent at all shy. The path to West Peak varies in difficulty level, from easy to moderate. Some places you have to use hands & feet to climb up.The 360 degrees view at the top isabsolutely worth the effort.
Ok, I love West Peak. Ive been up West Peak countless times and Ive never been disappointed. It is a very accessible mountain - easiest way up is from Helderberg Nature Reserve via Disakloof and Porcupine buttress or from Helderberg Farm. Scrambles are not too exposed and the trails have a good combination of jeep track and single tracks. From the top you have an amazing 360 view of the Hottentotsholland Mountain range, The Dome (the peak next to West Peak), the Cape Winelands towards Stellenbosch, Helderberg basin/Lourensford, False Bay all the way to Hangklip, Table Mountain, etc The view comes at cost and you will be climbing from the start. Well, if it does not kill you it will only make you stronger. ;)
2h30 up for the reasonably fit, but theres no rush. Its absolutely outstanding to see the whole of Cape town from the summit, and the immersion in nature on the way up is hypnotising.Arrive as early as possible, wear sunscreen and a hat especially in summer. 1 litre of water was not enough for me to be honest. Take care.
Not for the faint hearted.. lovely views
Beautiful place,I love the fynbos.
Lovely hike with breathtaking views of false bay
Cannot say I have been here, but look forward to reach it.
A challenging yet doable hike that does not take ALL day.Give yourself 5 hours - the climb is steep but not treacherous, a relaxing break at the summit and then gorgeous views over false bay on the descent.
Spectacular variety of proteas, good trails, some leading to access to the Dome and west peak. Those mountain trails not so good, need maintaining, resulting in short cuts being taken and the start of erosion. Still a stunning walk and views. Some scrambling.
Any one thats brave enough to take on downhill cycling, this is the place for you. There are shuttle days more ore less every month or second month. Great group of people and the organisers and trail builders are rad people. Great trails. Big jumps. Flow trails for those who arent that daring. Something for every one.
Amazing view
Always a great hike / trail run. And the views are spectacular with a 360 degree view. Climb either clockwise or anticlockwise. Anti clockwise has the sunrise and has beautiful vistas in the early morning sun. Safer than Table Mountain National Park.
Great peak to summit. Easy to get lost on the way down in the dark. Be out of there way before sunset.
Stunning hike up to the peak that gives you 270deg views across Vals bay and the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.
