Using Calvinia as a base, this hotel is ideally situated. Great interactions with staff and management/owner. Daniel was very helpful, sharing must visit and interesting sites in the area. Room spacious, clean with all necessary amenities. Thank you for great Karoo hospitality.

Cigarette smoke smell quite strong in non smoking room. Door not locking from outside. Water supply to shower not reliable. No wifi. Property needs some TLC.

Friendly, local, unique staff and good rooms/service. I am enjoying the unique “privately owned feel” that the Country Hotels have. I take my hat off to the owner of Country Hotels for not making cardboard cutout hotels in the usual franchise manner. Thank you for maintaining their authenticity.

Stopped here for a meal while waiting for the Ok Bazaar supermarket to open at 4pm on a Sunday in Calvinia.Clean looking interiors, but seriously dated furniture and decor.Restaurant meal was however delicious and reasonably priced.

Very quite town on a Saturday afternoon at about 2pm. It was the only place open for lunch and the food was good. The friendly waitress was the chef as well which truly gave it that small town homey feel. The decor is rustic and makes you feel like you are walking back in time - I truly loved it and the vibe that it created.

No value for money, not even remotely; wont see me again. I could not believe my eyes, when I saw the room & bathroom; if that was not bad enough, the breakfast sealed it.

Staff went out of their way to help. A little stark in decor.

I use to love to stay there, but had more problems with hot water. If it is not cold then there is no hot water that come out of the tap. I hope they sort it out.

Very friendly & accommodating staff. We rented 3 rooms. All 3 rooms were clean but very tired. Bathrooms have been refurbished but none of 3 baths were refurbished - black stained water marks & dried paint inside our bath from untidy refurbishment efforts.A complementary small bottle of water & mosquito pads/sprays would be welcome.

Spartan but adequate accommodation in a genuine olden days hotel. The plumbing in our room needs attention but the room was spacious, clean and the beds were comfortable. we could park 3 meters from our door. Had the nicest fish and chips supper Ive had in years.

Three of us stayed at the Calvinia Hotel for three nights. Our rooms were perfectly comfortable and clean with air conditioning, wifi, fridge, coffee making facilities etc. They even supplied us with anti-mosquito cream for the gazillions of mozzies that decend on you like a biblical plague! Also remember to bring your mosquito spray.The restaurant had a small choice of mostly red meats with either chips or salad. All were well prepared and tasty. Desert was ice-cream with chocolate sauce.Staff members were very friendly and charges were very reasonable. I can recommend a visit.

We had a lovely stay at the Calvinia Hotel. The rooms were super clean and the bed and bedding excellent quality. We had dinner at the hotel which was great. Daniel is a brilliant host.

Reception warm, tranquility, owner went out his way to accommodate us. Comfort, appreciate the hospitality. No fear of attracting Covid 19 as all rules and regulations are strictly being adhered to.

Like a ice cold fridge no heater have cold coming in fro windows and doors, door handles are broken look like Hanover Park Flats with a a merchant living in the cupboards

The room were very big and neat.

Not all rooms have bar fridges and the TV channels are very few only 7 channels on the DStv package. No SABC 1, 2 & 3. Sports channels limited to 3.

We always stop here for a light lunch, on our way to Cape Town, Gansbaai etc. Old world charm. The breakfast, lunch and sandwiches is delicious. It would be nice if the coffee could be freshly made and hot.

The Hotel has change a bit since my last visit in 2014, they used to have a pool above the entrance but due to the devastating drought they continue to experience it has been emptied.The rooms are good with comfortable beds and good aircon units to keep it at a comfortable temperature at the height of summer which can get into the 50 degree, be sure to pack mosquito repellent as you might be up in the middle of the night hunting them after a few flybys next to your ear.The food is great and I never had any issues with anything I ordered. They have a great T-bone steak and the ribs arent to shabby either but the highlight of their menu is the Karoo lamb.

I can only comment on the restaurant, and it wasnt great maybe okay but for the price I expected more. We did not have any choice, because it was a group booking I think , lasagna and salad, R 95 for a starter size portion. The normal pub or restaurant menu maybe a better bet.

The bed and linen was clean...staff friendly.That was the positive....now the negativerooms need revamp....carpet...cupboards...bathroom...I dont like it at all and will never stay here again. Toiletpaper is cheapest one-ply you can get.

Its unfortuantly not a very good expierence.The staff was very helpful and friendly, but entering our room it looked much like entering a waiting room.The sheets were clean, the TV however had some reception problems, but we werent plagued by mozzies as many others seemed to complain about.The biggest concern was the bathroom which had a shower bath setup, testing the water will ensure you get soaked so get undressed before you do, the roof is also growing some bad black mould, so maybe wear a mask too.I would also suggest buying a non slip Matt, we sacrificed a towel as I almost dislocated a shoulder slipping in a very slippery bath.I would also recommend eating out, the food portions although decent it wasnt particularly good, food poisoning isnt ideal while on holiday, the chips atleast was very very good.There is also secure parking on the hotel grounds.Edit: Appreciate the management getting hold of us and adressing the issues we had and promise to have it rectified.

The place is so bad. The very first day I checked in this hotel I was welcomed by mosquitoes, flies and a stuffy smell in their room. I would not recommend this to anyone yoh.

Calvinia Hotel has become my halfway house enroute to Cape town and back. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Quick responses on requests. Food at restaurant is well prepared and true to the Karoo

Worst stay of my life! Advert shows a Crystal blue pool, big clean rooms. Everything is run down, pool empty, smells of cigarettes. Rooms feel like a high school dormitory.

Great pub to have a couple of toots when in the lovely town of Calvinia

I stayed there on a Saturday night. Watched the rugby in the pub,great atmosphere . The staff are very friendly and helpful. The accommodation is clean but the lighting is poor the air con didnt work . The hotel is old . Had breakfast, pretty poor.

Slept here during my tour. Staff friendly, dinner and breakfast were well prepared. Room was clean with aircon.

Terrible disappointment. COUNTRY HOTELS who are marketing this place is deceptive in the pictures they post. This place in my estimate is a 1 star overnight room at best. Dirty industrial type carpets in the rooms. No lampshades in the bathroom is in fact illegal. Bedside lamps do not work. Items on menu are out of stock. Dining room chairs are downright dirty.

Has become my home away from home, staff are family by now and the service just keeps getting better.thank u for all that u guys do for me when I am there and the kitchen staff for the lovely breakfast and not forgetting the staff at the bar....awesome service all round....

The room was small but bed comfy and shower hot. The restaurant was closed as we arrived after 9pm but the manager (?) organised dinner for us.

Clean rooms, good food especially the lamb steaks with the mint sauce Carol managed to find! Staff were exceedingly helpful & went out of their way to help an injured friend.

This hotel is full of nostalgia from the yester years and the small town life, however the room we stayed in was dated and a lot of the small details were over looked, such as no bed side lights next to the bed. We were there on a Sunday and the hotel is the only place open for dinner. The food is simple bordering on mundane food with a price tag. The biggest dissapointment was that the pool was out of order, this was the reason why we choose to stay there and we weren’t informed about it. Otherwise the overall impression we got was that it was sufficient.

Paid R490 for a huge room including a tastefull breakfast.Next to the OK Supermaket that stays open to late as well as take aways if you dont want to eat at hotel.Hotel has a bar, restaurant and braai area which seems very cosy and welcoming.Remember to shower at night in the winter. It gets cold here and pipes freeze!Will definitely stay here again.
