A serene, beautiful and picturesque area that this establishment is situated in. The road is gravel and sand, during heavy rain it does become a slight challenge to drive through - that being said, we made it through with a Tiguan, Fortuner and an Audi A4.We stayed at the Barnhouse, for our Group of about 18 of us. It is quaint to say the least. The hospitality team are amazing though and ready to assist whenever they can. There is a Deep Freezer and Display fridge, Gas Stove, Ancient Microwave Oven (Analogue), Electric kettles, toasters, Number 2 Potjie Pot, Crockery and Cutlery, Braai Tongs - tons of hot water bottles for those chilly nights.A lady washes dishes twice a day, however, they do not make up the beds.Entertainment: The beautiful Drakensberg escarpment, hiking trails galore, amazing views, a water fall and lots of wild horses.Mobile signal is dismal, use your mobile device for emergencies only - and use the time at the retreat as a digital social detox. There is a 71cm TV and DSTV decoder, frayed pool table and indoor (not heated swimming pool) as alternate entertainment. The Barnhouse has a function room, lots of tables and benches for seating - a massive Fireplace/Indoor Braai and a charming Coal Stove (Falkirk Union 7), which we enjoyed cooking on.*The finishings are a bit rustic and outdated, it is in need of a refresh - a new lick of paint will be good, curtains are ancient and so is the furniture - suppose its part of that old world charm. Blankets are thin, if you need additional ask at the Lodge. The Lodge is kitted with a 40 inch TV and Massive Pool/Billiards Table - in great nick. You can also arrange with the lodge for meals, if required.Pleasant, relaxing, quiet, serene, beautiful, breathtaking views, nice walks...far from the crowd, if this is what you are after, then welcome to Drakensberg Mountain Retreat. *Pics to follow

A most wonderful place to visit. Beautiful view over the Drakensburg and the Midlands. Although we stayed for only one night, we afterwards felt that we should have stayed for a minimum of one week, just to relax and enjoy the scenery. The buffet in the evening and the typical english breakfast was a feast, with the warmth of the nice fireplace rounding it off.Management and staff extremely helpful and courteous.Long time since we experience such clear skies in the evening, to do star gazing.A must visit place

First class customer service in a very warm, homely atmosphere. We were left in the lurch by our prior accommodation and were saved at very short notice by Drakensburg Mountain Retreat who accommodated us late at night and a even provided a last minute lovely meal past kitchen closing time. Furthermore - the setting and views are spectacular, so restful. Wish we had stayed longer to explore more. Will return again.

A really awesome out-of-the way place. Stunning views. Good for trail running and hiking (they have marked paths there). Nice food, too. The many fireplaces (needed in winter) make for a great ambience.Go and visit the Kaalvoet Vrou Monument (a walk away) or Retief Rock Memorial at Kerkenberg (S 28°30’19.7E 29°06’34.7) while you are there. (Just have some clearance for your vehicle). We had some vehicle troubles there and Theo went well out of his way to assist us. Thanks, Theo.Ive been there a few times now. A great getaway, not too far from Johannesburg.

The mountain retreat was a well deserved refuge after my co-traveler and I got into a heavy thunderstorm while hiking. The beauty of this place with the horses grazing, cozy fire places and great books to read immediately calmed us down and the warm towels we were welcomed with added to the feeling of comfort. Wonderful detail! After a swim in the pool and the very well chosen combination of different tastes in the delicious three course meal we were spoiled even more: the staff packed some breakfast bags for us because we were planning to do an early hike the next morning. Luckily the hiking trails leave right from the resort. I am sure we will come back because the place became a special place for us not because of its great service but because at Drakensberg Mountain Retreat, I got to call my co-traveler my girlfriend. She said yes. And I would always say yes to staying there again. Thank you :)

Really beautiful and charming place with views to die for. Converted from an old farm house it truly gives you serinity and a sense of being away from it all. The wild horses that frequent the area further add to the mountain feel. This place is pet friendly and the staff are extremely helpful. Will definitely visit again. PS. If you dont have a SUV or 4x4 the 10 km gravel drive can shake a car up a bit.

The setting was beautiful. The dirt road to the retreat was not bad. View is spectacular. The toilets in Room 10 had a smell and there is another room next to Room 10 which has a chilly plant in it. This has a very bad smell due to no ventilation especially on a hot day.

The view was awesome... The road to Drakensberg mountain retreat is a 4X4 dream and a cars nightmare. The rooms need air-conditioning and DSTV, the pool needs steps to get in and out of the pool. The host Garry Anthony and Elna was superb 5 star...

We had a nice stay here. They knew we just got married the previous day so they spoilt us a bit. Very modest lodgings but it has a certain intimate charm to it. Incredibly peaceful. The gravel road getting to the place is quite a pain, very bumpy - 4x4 or 4x2 recommended!

The room was ok. I will not say this is a 4* hotel. Rather a 3*. When you book a 4* you expect certain amenities which were not there. Staff was friendly. Did not like the dinner set up. It was not what was expected and a bit in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do. Websites, like all other, va bit misleading

We spent two nights in the hotel and would have loved to stay forever! The place is so wonderful - quiet, peaceful, magnificent views! There are various hiking trails around the farm that have been lovingly created for the visitors of the property and are excellently designated. If you ask for a short introduction before the trip. There is nothing that I would like to change about the place - we loved it! Just the thing for everyone who is looking for peace and like to travel in nature or want to enjoy nature in the garden with a breathtaking view! Despite the rocky approach our absolute recommendation!
