Really good service makes you feel special and taken care of from the moment you arrive. The carefully constructed set menu available at every meal provides an opportunity to try new foods, or enjoy a safer option cooked to perfection. The rooms are clean and modern with everything you may need. Because of the setting, the view is spectacular and daily walks allow you to appreciate different aspects of the Drakensberg mountains.

What a wonderful place. It was the 80 th BIRTHDAY of the Cavern. High-tea, champagne and birthday-dinner was highlights. Beautiful scenery and lots of activities for everyone. Want to go back and stay longer.

Mountains, clear crisp fresh air, amazingly supportive and caring hosts. Whats not to love. The added touches like writing, Congratulations in chocolate on our dinner plates because we got engaged while out on a hike are just those special touches demonstrating the care and hosts genuinely hold for their guests. What a Beautiful place to get away and relax. Food is out of this world. Staff all very friendly. The Cavern my be 80 years of age but it is still run by the Carte family for families. Mountains, adventure, rides and spa.

Excellent service couldnt ask for better

The most beautiful, old school family run, hotel resort. Situated in the northern burg, right at the base of the mountain range. Hotel facilities are well appointed and cater for every activity for all weather condition, indoor or outdoor, with a strong family orientation. One of the better options for a burg getaway. Not cheap but excellent value for your money. Will very definitely be back again soon, hopefully.

Love the Drakensberg and visited the area many times. However, only my first time at the Cavern. What a find for families, groups and company breakaways. Been many years since experiencing a venue with so much to do! Walking and running trails, mountain biking, tennis, bowls, table tennis, darts, spa, leisure at the pool, sight seeing, etc. Everything is well kept and service is good. Wine cellar is great! Food was a mixed bag between good and not so good. All in all a solid 4 star rating.

The cavern keeps getting better and better! Attentive and friendly staff, sumptuous food, eclectic activities- it caters for everyone! The scenery is breathtaking. It is the jewel of the berg.

Beautiful resort. Generally followed covid 19 protocols , except in the main dining room. The resort was full and so was the dining room and because it was cold the doors and windows were closed. Buffets were served for salads at lunch and dinner and fruit and cereal for breakfast. The staff tried to get everyone to sanitize their hand but not everyone did. The buffet is a potential covid spreader. As os the dining room.Other than that the rooms were great and the food good.

Super disappointed. The food was definitely not up to my standard, although the presentation was good. But whats the good if theres lack of flavor!The drive there and back was nerve wrecking... After getting off the freeway... Potholes galore.The Cavern as a whole, definitely a no no for me ever again.Managent was absent during our stay, or perhaps they chose who they wanted to chat to, cos they certainly didnt approach us.Of all my many trips to the berg, this was by far the most disappointing.

I used to go visit there during the school holidays years back 1998 to 2000, my principal had connection with the owner Peter Carter (sp). It was a way to help me to improve my English when it comes to speaking and understanding. It was hard at first because I was not used to it but it got better.I used to play with the children in playroom and take part in walks with the guests and tour guides Dumisani Ngccobo and Zakhe Mabaso the only 2 I can remember and go to the mountains. I enjoyed every moment of the journey, from making juice in the mountain and drinking tea and lovely crunchees😋.Those were the good days, and the guests were very friendly. Some used to offer me some clothes and shoes🤗 Hopefully 1 day I will get an opportunity to work there as a housekeeper or a tour guide as I did Tourism And Hospitality Management. Lol or maybe become 1 of the guests 😊

We are currently in the middle of our stay here. This is my third visit and my husbands 15th or so (he has lost count) and we completely understand why The Cavern is known as the place of many happy returns. Obviously, this being one of many stays we have had and one of hopefully many more to come, this time is different for many reasons.2020-2021 has not been easy for anyone but stuck in our tiny Johannesburg apartment, a postponed 2020 wedding and having to cancel our dream international honeymoon, among other things, we experienced sadness, loss and anxiety. Emotions many can relate to.In April we finally managed to get married, but we didnt take a honeymoon. Eventually in July, we longed for a somewhere to celebrate us. The Cavern was the only place we wanted to go. Not our original honeymoon destination, but our magical home away from homeAs soon as we arrived, we were overcome with emotion, in the best possible way.The past few days taking walks in the beautiful mountains, enjoying the company of gorgeous dogs and having the best cuddle naps with Tiger the cat, eating the most amazing food and being greeted and spoilt by the incredible staff, our spirits have been rejuvenated.The Cavern is a definitely a little piece of heaven here on Earth and we will be forever grateful for the peace and tranquility it has helped us and probably many, restore inside themselves.A big shout out to Mike, one of The Caverns guides for his wicked sense of humour and pure passion for what he does. Without him, I may have cried going up to Policemans Helmet (over a year of lockdown has made me unfit haha). Mandla, another guide for going above and beyond to make sure we could experience the full glory of this beautiful landscape. Samuel who greets us every meal time with a beaming smile and for always letting me know when the tasty Cavern coffee is ready.To the entire Cavern team, thank you for the most amazing week and for the healing you never knew you did within us. We hope to see you again very soon

Great place to relax and ideal if you are a family with young kids

This is my 3rd trip back since august last year as my husband comes up for work.Its an absolutely amazing family resort.The rooms are gorgeous, kids dining hall, entertainment and activities are awesome and the staff are fantastic.They also follow strict covid policies which is great too.

Amazing place, fond memories as a school kid. Glad to have had the opportunity to take my daughter there and hope to go back again soon.

There is clearly a big difference when the owners run a hotel. Cavern is high quality. They have maintained it brilliantly. Its nestled right in the mountains and is on the closer side to Johannesburg so more convenient. The restaurant offers an extremely fresh and crunchy salad bar and the menu selection is excellent. Very very kid and family friendly. For anyone with knee or hip issues watch out as lots of steep areas.

Such a beautiful getaway. The most professional and friendly staff you will, ever encounter. They go above and beyond. Rooms are spacious and tidy and coffee and tea tray is always filled up. We recently went back to the Cavern for our 10 year Anniversary and we were pleasantly surprised by a free upgrade to a family suite as well as a foot spa voucher and a pony ride voucher for the kids. The Cavern never fails to exceed our expectations. The staff is always on hand, the waiters are always fast on their feet and all the staff smile at you and greet you as you walk by. Lets not forget about the babysitters as their job is just as important, they are very good with the kids! The Cavern is a well oiled machine with pristine rooms and restaurant, plenty to do and the view is always breathtaking! The food is amazing, the staff is amazing, the hikes are amazing, everything is just amazing!!! Well done Cavern staff and managers. Well done and thank you for a brilliant, unforgettable holiday! 10 STARS for you!

This was my first visit. I went with my friend who first visited when she was 10rs old.some 74 yrs ago! She returned 4yrs ago &couldnt stop raving about it.so 2 weeks ago, we went back. It truly exceded my expectations. I had a wonderful time.comfy room.delicious food with lots of choices.helpful &friendly staff.i went on daily guided walks suitable for my age.i enjoyed the birding weekend, the views &the air of peace &tranquility.although loath to leave the immediate surrounds, we visited Royal Natal National Park (wow the Amphitheatre) & spionkop battle ground (sobering &informative). My only complaint - & not the Caverns fault- its a 2-day drive from Cape Town.

Our stay at The Cavern was fantastic from start to finish! The room was very clean and serviced every day. The service was great, the staff are all very friendly and have a can do attitude. The food was AMAZING! Initially the portions had us a bit sceptic but when they say eat as much as you want, they mean it. To top it all off you have the amazing views which get even better when you go on one of the guided walks. Well definitely be back ☺️

A very beautiful, upmarket resort that offers some spectacular hiking. The units are very neat and tidy but offer very little entertainment as you are encouraged to enjoy the facilities and outdoors.They offer tea twice daily and the food is all inclusive. They have an excellent wine selection.If you have kids, there is a wonderful play room with nannies to help out.

Great family destination in the Northern Drakensberg. Would highly recommend. The food was wonderful, staff friendly and stacks of activities do do.

Perfect from beginning to end! Everything we needed was available in our spacious room. The Cavern provides 3 meals a day which we enjoyed, with tea served twice a day between meals. There is plenty to do during your stay and the self guided walks we did were great fun. The spa was peaceful and most definitely a relaxing treat. Cant wait for our next visit!

5 star getaway experience

Booked and paid 9 months in advance. On arrival we were told that we were upgraded to a better suite.Our room now had a view of thick bushes. (Not the Drakensberg)We felt like we were pushed aside.We were with the Indians ,Coloureds and Afrikaans people at the bottom of the resort .I will never go there again. Nice place, though. Old English club. Would like to punch a few of those mf in the face.

Fantastic place. View out if this world. Food absolutely unbelievable. Compliments to the chefs and the staff. Staff extremely courteous and friendly. Room was always spotless. Reception had a very warm and welcoming effect. Feel that each room should have a internal phone so that guests were able to contact the front desk and room service. E.g. bar, laundry and Forest Retreat Spa. Definitely rate 100%. 5 star rating.

Excellent stay! Everything was wonderful, the food, staff, room and scenery was amazing. I would definitely go back. Only down for me was the spa experience; the room and massage bed was cold. The therapist seemed inexperienced.

Set in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful part of South Africa is There Cavern. Initially I was concerned about the accommodation and bed and food servings being too small. Thanks to very obliging and helpful staff members I was kindly upgraded to a room with a king size bed and advised that asking for second helpings of food was perfectly acceptable. A fantastic getaway for the family with loads to see and do and a place I would certainly recommend to friends and family.

Superb getaway in the mountains if you like outdoor activities bordering on strenuous, otherwise it may be too far to travel. Meals are included and you eat as much as you want. Meals are elegant and usually pretty nicely prepared ,although the chef is better at some dishes than others. There are games evenings laid on which were lovely and created a good spirit for the folk who took part. Plenty of amenities here including walking, hiking, riding, swimming, bowls and tennis. Prices are on the high side unless you really use a lot of their facilities. If you have small children or a large family you are more likely to prefer being closer to town with more choice, such as Mount Champagne.

Absolutely stunning...views and fresh mountain air

Very nice lodge. Beautiful rooms and bedrooms, and a lot of nice activities like a swimming pools, a pool and ping-pong table and walks ( I really recommend! ), even evening activities like a quiz or the staff whos singing! The food was delicious! Everyday the menu -amso in the morning- was different and very tasty. They also started a local school, so we visited them, it was quite nice, but it was schoolholiday so there were no kids 😉

Great place, great staff, great guide (the best is Micheal) great food (close to an Italian avarage restaurant). I really spent nice time with my family and I loved to visit 15 minutes before the dinner the wine cellar. The perfect place to choose the best wine for my wife. 😂

It was the most amazing experienceThe place is an old country resort set deep in the Drakensberg mountains. The food is amazing and included in the price. It has a pool, tennis court, dam for fishing and much much more.the rooms themselves are warm and comfortable with clean bathrooms and cosy beds. They have planned hikes every day and a kids dining hall with supervision. They also offer baby sitting if you want some time off. It is definitely worth its cost and is thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend this place.

Very nice hotel, the area they own is enormous, and beautiful to walk and explore. The staff are very polite and eager to help. The rooms are large and comfortable, with luxurious bathrooms. The food was delicious, and there is a large amount of guided trails and other activities provided by the hotel.

Rooms are nice, very cosy, however no phone so cant book anything unless going to reception. The food is great, breakfast very limited no sausages for 3 days, isnt that a standard breakfast item, dinner was great. Thokozo is very good at his job as a waiter. Night Activities for adults a bit disappointing, they have two pool tables only one set of cues and white ball available. The spa is exceptional and the staff are very professional, the entertainment desk need some training. No help at all. All and all a good experience.

Wonderful in every respect except the falling opportunities for the 18 month to 2 to 2 1/2 year olds. Family stayed in room 301 which had a an unprotected drop for a few metres where the outdoor seating is. In fact barriers are rather scary for little ones. The childrens play area and care there is fantastic but outside those specific areas you need to be ever watchful.

What a wonderful place. Like being in the Shire in the Lord of the rings.Our room wasnt very private with the path by our patio, so we will choose a more private room next time. We are already planning our next trip here.

Our stay was amazing. Accommodation was comfortable, clean with comfy beds. Food was superb and the staff friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile. The views and walks through nature were beautiful, they have been good stewards of the land they look after. Our waitron Neh was a ray of sunshine and we enjoyed her company and lovely smile. Themba our guide on walks and bar tender was always ready for our jokes. We will remember our stay with fond memories and hope to be back.
