Highly recommended. We were thrilled to find this delightful spot on a pass going into the Drakensberg. We made sure we stopped again on the way home. Delightful service and brilliant food both times. Also loved the country shop. Cant wait to visit again. No visit to the Drakensberg should be without a stop here !

This was our third visit to this lovely establishment. When we are in the area we always plan a stop for a breakfast or lunch. This time we were driving past and had a quick stop for an early morning scone and cappuccino it is definitely worth a visit. If your are in the area stop for a freshly baked scone or a hearty breakfast.

We booked a little cottage last minute due to amended travel plans. What a delight :) Siti booked us in quickly and efficiently before showing us our little cottage. It was clean and comfy with DSTV, a mini-fridge and a coffee/tea station. The stunning view stretches for miles! Also onsite was an awesome shop with basics, freshly baked home produce and delicious coffee. Unfortunately we didnt get to try the menu as we were rushing :/Nearby is the Sterkfontein Dam, and many historical and natural walks and hikes. We will certainly be back to explore the area and to stay here again :)

We had delicious coffee here this morning seated on an immaculate lawn under an umbrella. We did not have anything to eat by choice but from what we saw the breakfast served to the table nearby was well presented. The staff too were quietly positioned and ready to serve. The toilets were not up to standard. Broken seats and no means of drying hands. A disappointment considering the beauty of the grounds and buildings. The access road from the R74 is dangerously situated on a bend of the road - ripe for an accident to happen at any moment. I’d urge the owners to get the roads authority to install rumble strips before the bend to slow down traffic.

After reading the comments below I also share the same sentiment of poor service, average food and a arrogant manager/owner who retaliates with go to Wimpy for every negitive comment. I dont understand how in Covid times such places have support... It is shocking that your comments to all the clients complaining is... we were busy... Or rather go to Wimpy... These statements blow my mind... Either you have shares in Wimpy that you keep wanting customers to go there instead of fix the issues at hand... Or you have a vendetta against a well established frachise...either way we are all humans, so instead of using all your energy to bad mouth another franchise rather use it to fix the issues in your service. I hope you can learn from your negitive feedback and respond positively instead of go to Wimpy.

If tou find yoirself in this part of the world a stop for breakfast or lunch here is a must. This was the border post between Natal and the Orange Free State during the late 1890s (Anglo Boer War time) and is rich in history of the time. They also cater for sleepovers with rooms to rent or just a stop to quench your thirst during your travels or to stem the hunger pains with a nice menu.

Lets discuss the owners response to my review...Firstly for a padstal, whose focus is on food and service, has made a miserable attempt to remedy the situation once again. An unpleasant experience by a group of 9 customers and a bill of R600 later we can break down the experience into the following:1. The definition of busy, is when all your tables are fully booked and all the tables and chairs are occupied. Unfortunately this was not the case.2. As per your menu a milkshake includes icecream. The milkshake recieved was that of only milk, maybe think of changing your menu to read milk with some flavour added.3. To wait for an hour after placing an order for food is by any means unacceptable. No matter how busy you claim to be.4. It is advisable as an owner and or manager to attend to the table that has indicated that theyre waiting for their food for an hour, to apologise for the inconvenience and there after attend to the kitchen to get those orders out timeously and still maintain the quality that you strive for.5. There after, once the food has been served to that table, to once again attend to that table and ensure that the food is of quality.6. The food was rushed and as a result thereof, the food was simply put... Average.7. To take on another company, by using Wimpy to show how low my standards are, as a customer is not acceptable or applicable in any sense. I would rather say that you should learn something from a nation wide franchise like Wimpy.8. From my experience in the hospitality industry, a customer is your bread and butter and to retaliate with an uncceptable response to a complaint is not the best solution to your problem.9. Take the advise and do some damage control and sometimes the consequences to your response might in return warrent even further issues and complaints.I truly hope that everyone looking at reviews of your place will read this response.Have a wonderful year ahead and I will be sure to stop by Wimpy.

Having just got back from a very nice 2 night stay at Windmill Farm cottages I feel its only right to comment on the food we had for breakfast at the Phatt Chef:The omelettes served at this establishment are hands down the best Ive ever had. Driving up the Oliviershoek Pass we stumbled upon a very interesting looking establishment and we decided to visit. And we are so glad we did! A uniquely interesting pub/restaurant/diner with the most captivating interior. Take some time to wander around and take in the decor. The friendly hostesses welcome you warmly. A very diverse menu with very well prepared food, priced right. I was adopted by their dog Mungo, which made my day! This will go on our places-to-loose-track-of-time list. Stop here when you are in the vicinity, you will not be disappointed.

Nice little Roadside stop. The restaurant has very friendly service (from the local dog as well) and the food is nice. Id recommend it for anyone in need of a food stop on the go.

This review concerns only the restaurant. The setting is spectacular. A great place to stop, relax and refresh.Unfortunately the full menu is not available at all times. Breakfast is only up until 10AM, and lunch starts after 12PM, and in between the options are limited. No problem with the food though, the scones and the flapjacks are very good. Service was a bit slow though.I would recommend stopping there.

Well I cannot say I dislike the place - it just needs Jacking Up !The food was ok ( smoked chicken salad ) but my wifes Pork sandwich was awful (meat was off ). We did complain ( to the waitress) but management did not bother. ..? So no communication between waitress and management.Flies were a huge problem so waitresses sprayed poison. .? While we ate. ...Noisy from the road noise but great view. Be careful when exiting as ZA drivers dont give way !The building does need qualified maintenance.

We had a lovely 4 night stay. Great restaurant. All the food was amazing and well presented. The room was spacious and clean. Had a tea and coffee station. We travelled with our little dog. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Great breakfast made to order was included. We also had dinner and bought snacks, biltong, succulents from the shop. We enjoyed lovely walks to the damn and around the area. Great views. Easy drive to Clarens or Winterton for a day trip. Wifi worked. No TV. No hairdryer. We brought a laptop and watched things we brought with. Bring a book or crossword book. Or hang out in the bar. Board games were available. Fantastic way to unwind from Joburg. The fact that the stay included breakfast, made it really good value for money.
