Went there for hiking, for some reasons I went against the traffic π there were markings on trails, but I wasnt the only who got lost π I helped some ladies to take a correct path...Yeah they give the map at the gate, I just didnt have time to study it. I will go back and use the map this time around πππ₯°
When one visits any public place, one never has control over the number of people there. My friends and I entered the reserve around 2pm and expected it to be full. We were lucky to see not too many people and cars. It cost us R39.40 per person and you pay by card. Its open from 7am to 7pm. It was our first time there so we drove around the braai and picnic areas first before we picked a spot in the picnic area. The grounds and one ablution block were clean. There are single benches scattered around, so if you decide to visit, you will need picnic chairs and tables. There are so many trees providing shade which made our time there very pleasant. There are hiking trails π£which we are saving for next time we visit. The Wonderboom Junction shopping mall is opposite so one could get extra supplies. It is a blessing to have this beautiful place in nature so close to my home. We had a wonderful time and felt so refreshed. Until next time.
Hiking trails are long, dont Hike with kids below age of 10 years. There is a very spacious area where you can braai and relax after the hike, maybe there you can relax with kids under the age of 10 years. Overall we had a great experience.
It would be great to email them first for info, they dont accept cash at the gate only card payment, and not enough signage.....But none the less what an amazing view, rocky but balance trails. Theres 1 particular tree (roots) that caught my eyes, love it see pic....im definitely coming back again.....just for that & the fresh breeze air π»πΏ
It is a nice place for hiking. I had so much fun here
Challenging hike but worth it. Amazing views and peaceful scenery. I just wish there could br clearer directions to the waterful cause I couldnt find it.
Really enjoyed the walking and hiking. Friendly helpful staff. Clean picnic/braai area. A map of the trail at the entrance would be a big help. The trail are steep and difficult at some places. Love the plaques with historical data. Dont attempt to do everything in one hike. The climb up to the fort are quite a challenge. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Take lots of water. Trail markers needs a lot of attention. The view from the top are magnificent.
Very nice place to buy building materials and at your own pace.
Beautiful calm nature reserve with rich history
Amazing. A wonderful experience.
First time there recently. What a surprise this was. Really worth a visit and a walk through. Take your time and you will see much.
Theres a hiking trail leading to a very beautiful view. Its amazing β¨
Hidden gem for hikers and history lovers. About 5km of hiking trials but heavy elevation gain to reach the fort. Beautiful views from the Wonderboom fort. Theres also a 1000 year old tree complex and information on the landscape, history and nature of the place. Picnics are allowed. A must see for nature and history enthusiasts. FYI the fort is abandoned so makes for some good pictures.
Wow wow wow is was awesome we had fun as we brought 60 kids from our church nd is safe for everyone...thank you nature reserve
Good hike trails, trail markers could use some refurbishment. In this reserve you can expect to see Impala, Zebra, Black Backed Jackals and Vervet Monkeys. Excellent spot for birding.
This was a pretty cool trail, gets the heart pumping. Itβs less than 5km. Wish we were provided with maps though, itβs pretty easy to get lost. Nice views overlooking Pretoria.
Fresh air on to of the mountains. Perfect view up there.
Love it. A great place to go with family and friends, or even by yourself. You get to learn about the history of the place
What a interesting morning. The entrance looks great and staff are friendly. But that idea of a modern reserve soon disperses as u head on the trail of rock paved walking trails up the hill. Routes could definitively be marked better and I and others have found our self thoroughly lost. Sometimes even deep in the bush with no trail anywhere. It was part of the fun but .... As for my recommendations the park is a lot dilapidated apart from the entrance and i did not even make it to the waterfall or the pick-nick area. it is not a park for runners as there are to many hills and unmarked trails is not worth it. Hiking and photos was a definitive workout and highly recommended. i did not have a problem finding the deer and missed my shots of the dassies and meercat but they are there. Due to season i will return better equipped as this was my first time.
Amazing hike trails, awesome view from uptop
Was only at the gate but it looks nice
A lot of restrictions due to covid19 but great atmosphere good price
This place needs better marketing and management...
Best feeling on hiking. Uphill climb
Nice place if you want to chill out with your friends in private, great climb to get to the fort.
Its a steep but great walk. I wish pick up the litter every now and then, and that the hooligans would stop littering.
We were the only ones there, we did however feel safe because of the staff that was present. The Nature reserves includes the Wonderboom tree and Fort Wonderboom up the Hill. The trail up to the fort takes about half an hour. It is not very well marked but the trail up to the fort is pretty straightforward. For the reserve you have to pay an entrance fee.
This is by far the best hiking experience Ive ever had... I absolutely underestimated the short distance. The hike was very tough I must say, I was challenged physically & mentally. The place is very beautiful & at the top of the mountain you get aerial view to some parts of Wonderboom & Gezina. The route is mostly rocky, narrow & either very steep/aggressive downward sloping. Unfortunately I was wearing my running shoes so I slipped & fell a lot because I was pacing & running where the route would let me but no serious injury. Id recommend tough hiking boots or sneakers with strong grip instead of running shoes to avoid slipping on the rocks. Id also recommend hiking as a pair or a group as opposed to hiking alone as the map isnt easy to understand (or maybe I shouldve just listened more in geography class)... I went off course many times & even reached a dead end & had to retrace my steps to get back on course.
Swimming pools are being repaired its going to be a nice place
I found the map not easy to follow especially where it indicates waterfall and the cave, could not find the two points of interest as the one route leading to the waterfall leads to a dead end. Very rocky but actually lovely, most of the paths clearly marked and easy to follow.
Friendly people animals and nature to observe
Great break away to nature in the middle of town.
Awesome adventure on a weekend to get out the house, day hikes! Waterfall on the map doesnt exist. The cave on the hike is closed with burglar proofing. Otherwise the hike to the fort is pretty good, need to be fit! And you need proper hiking shoes. My wife and 3 year old and I did it in our slops, didnt know what to expect and we hurt our ankles. Theres a little bit of climbing to do, pathways are wide. But your on a mountain climbing. Need to take plenty of water and good hiking shoes to protect your ankles. Wonderboom history is actually pretty cool!!
The wonderboom nature reserve is a beautiful hocking spot. Clear and visible signage is critical for hicking routes. We were lost on top and its stoney.
A bit more tlc is needed on their trails. Markings arent clear and the reserve looks forgotten as compared to other City of Tshwane parks and nature reserves.
They are supposed to open at 7am. When I arrived at 7:23 they had still not opened and I could not pay for entrance. The guard had to take down my details so I can pay when I leave. The hike itself is very steep. There are monkeys and I saw what looked like a warthog. The views are absolutely spectacular
Good trail but clear enough
So I challenging
Amazing, dont go there when you are unfit, much stamina is needed, too much step hillsGood work out though
Its a beautiful place to chill
Awsome place to go hiking
The view from the top is truly worth it. Beautiful landscape of Pretoria.
Great hiking, with easy to follow trails. Very tranquil and quite cheap to get in.
Exploring nature
Was my first time hiking. Loved it.
The scenery is lovely, the only downfall is that the reserve is surrounded by a very busy highway so you dont hike in peace and quiet because the constant buzzing of the trucks and traffic on the highway is so loud that it really takes away from the beauty of the reserve. It doesnt feel like youre out in nature.
I assumed that you could have a self drive in this reserve. This place is actually more for hiking. The hiking trails are beautiful and give you a good exercise.
If you like hiking, Im sure you will like the hiking trails they have at woonderboom nature park. There are plenty of places to take photos, if you are obsessed with photos. Its location is perfect (its opposite a mall).
Nice mountain walk to the old Fort. Beautiful views of the city and surrounds. Also good for a picnic or braai under the trees.
Stunning place serene and peaceful
Nice walk up to the fort
We took the trail to the fort. Beautiful view and interesting to see the fort. Overall good experience.
Awesome hike to the top! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great for a quick hike up the mountain with an awesome view of Pretoria and interesting fort.
Great place for quick braai and nature walk.
Nice place for outdoor braai
Nice hike and good braai and picnic spot.Hike up to the fort and back can be done in 1.5 hours. A lot of steep steps on the way but beautiful views from the top.
It was amazing. I enjoyed myself but hiking wasnt as easy as I thought. Im definitely going back again!
It was ok, even though some of the directions or signs got us lost, we didnt get to see the cave or waterfall. Other than that it was nice.
At first, the map makes no sense! Very much out of scale, it is though accurate.Pretty intense hike to the actual fort if you only hike as a hobby on weekends, well worth it in the end.I think the waterfall is only existant when it pours down with rain, more of a river flowing down the mountain.
Excellent place. Well preserved. A must for hiking lovers, families with growing kids and family picnics.... Braai facilities.....
The walk and the view is awesome. I would suggest a few more rubbish bins around so that people do not litter.
Stand in awe of a thousand year old tree and then hike up the mountain on a path of hewn rock to the ruin of a 125 year old fort. Take in a birdseye view of Pretoria. A most enjoyable day outing!
Great for a quick hike up the mountain with great views of PTA. Safe to take the family and have a picnic under the trees afterwards.
Thee best. Its underrated and most people dont know about. Its best hiking place.
Lovley place to go for a walk and challenge yourself by climbing the mountain. I loved to see that they take good care of the environment and of course the tree and its daughter trees. But the information boards can be replaced with new ones.
100% for hiking
My neighbour, everyday I wake up to birds singing, horses, impala running around, planes, helicopters hovering around or passing to land at nearby Wonderboom Airport, Ill cry the day I leave this place soon, Ill miss this beautiful place, imagine opening your curtains to see nature, now its pitch black...
Breathe taking
Wonderful experience didnt feel we in the city still.
Read a review that said rated best mtb trail....True story...
Magnificent views and relatively safe.
Very good.
Safe space for 5km hike, the scenery is beautiful once you summit, Pretoria is beautiful. Great conversations from the book club with author Dudu Busani-Dube, venue staff was unprepared with overwhelming hikers and book lovers, entrance into the park took too long, park cashier arrived late, this delayed starting time for group hike
Great hiking,amazing view.
Though but nice hiking trails
Good for a weekend morning hiking...
Beautiful area
Love the walk up to the fort
A little hike and a great view in the middle of the city. A must when you need a break and what to spend some time in nature close to home.
