With the wine tasting center and restaurant being built high up against the hillside, The Newton Johnson Wine Estate arguably has one of the best views of the Hemel-and-Aarde valley. I have never been to their restaurant, but doing a tasting of their wines while you have such a great view is very special. I loved walking out onto their deck area after receiving each wine, but just be careful as the wind can sometimes be very strong, so hold onto your glass. The farm is however not all about the view, with their wines in my opinion being the main attraction. From their whites to their reds, you are sure to find something you like and the tasting room staff are generally very knowledgeable. Even though their tasting room is on the smaller side it is still worth a visit, even on a cold and rainy day - their Full Stop Rock will definitely warm you up. They keep to the standard of the other farms in the area and its a definite must-visit.
Amazing views and outstanding food. Top class service with a smile. Well worth the visit.
A truly excellent meal enjoyed by our party of four. Stunning views over the Hemel en Aarde Valley from the restaurant 👍😊
Excellent view. Wine-tasting offered on site. Friendly hostess. Food a bit disappointing.
It would be extremely hard to beat the view and the fantastic food from The Restaurant at Newton Johnson. Chef Ricky and his team strives to only present you with fresh, locally sourced produce and so much of it is foraged by the team on their doorstep. Best duck breast Ive ever eaten and so the list can go on.....
I have read the previous negative reviews and exactly the same thing happened to us. Walked into the restaurant at 2:45 (more than an hour before closing) and was told that the kitchen was closed already and no food could be prepared. I know the two businesses are individuals but I would like to include the tasting room as well. The tasting room manageress was extremely unwelcoming, which resulted in us walking out, vowing never to return
Just wow, the view here is amazing, stay as long as you can.
Every where you go to in the Cape. People are friendly and helpful. I cant say I liked one place more than another. Here you made to feel so welcome you just want to stay for ever 💕
Fantastic wines, best view and great facilities
Only did wine tasting but wines were better than Creation. Great situation and views down to Walker Bay. Only doing breakfast and lunch on Sat and Sun. Well worth visit.
Had a lovely birthday lunch for my boyfriends mom on her 60th. Food and wine was amazing! The Walkerbay Pinot Noir was the highlight of the day. Would highly recommend this restaurant for great food, wine, service and astonishing views.
Finally there good and affordable food is back to this place. What a great change!New team indulge visitors with nice, very tasty variety of dishes and wines. The Sundown Dinner on every Friday is unforgettable experience. Do not miss that!
Great wine tasting with amazing view of the valley. R40pp
Wide variety of well priced, healthy succulents and cacti and others. Difficult to choose!
View was great, food OK. The breads were terrible
Beautiful view, great food
It was a very disappointing experience for a pricey restaurant. We arrived, and it almost felt like we were imposing as we tried to establish our reservation. Luckily I had made a note of the person I booked with on the day and what time. Beautiful view, although was disappointed that from all the tables only 3 tables had access to the view. The service was certainly not in keeping with the food prices. Would not recommend this restaurant unfortunately.
Great food, great atmosphere, great staff
Setting is superb. The view down the valley to the ocean is just too stunning
Great breakfast with breathtaking view
My absolute favourite lunch spot in Hermanus. Fresh, seasonal, foraged menu. Menu changes according to fresh produce brought in. Lovely open kitchen and professional team. Best views of the valley. Superb wine list to boot.
The food is fantastic, my favorite is the duck.
Spectacular! We’ve been eating our way across Southeast Africa, tasting menus, top chefs and this was a big surprise. Can’t believe we just walked into it for lunch. The beef was perfect, looked over sauced but he pulled off a perfect sauce on a great cut of meat. The fries were just excellent, crunchy with fat and salt. Great salads and wines too.
World class food served in wonderfully relaxed and understated surroundings with incredible views. Very much the same attention paid to the food as to their amazing wines. The staff are always fantastic and accommodating. Do yourself a favour and make sure you sample their vegetarian options (Im a confirmed carnivore, btw) - they are some of the best Ive eaten anywhere. Highly recommended.
Absolutely exquisite... The kitchen is out in the open and everyone seems happy to be there. The food combinations were insanely wonderful. The chef, Rickey Broekhoven, was brilliant. He even gave me a loaf of his perfect bread.
Amazing place - we bought some Sauvignon Blanc. Unfortunately haven’t had the opportunity to eat here but we‘ll definitely come back for lunch!
We had high expectations based on other reviews but unfortunately they were not met. Let me start with the positives. The starters were 5 star! We had the aubergine and the porcini gnocchi, both were great! After that the food was a less exciting. However, the service all just felt a bit rookie which is driving this rating. We had asked earlier in the day if we could change our reservation to 30 minutes later, and were told NO, which is fair enough. However, when we then showed up on time we had to sit at our table for 45 minutes before we were allowed to order as the kitchen wasnt ready for our order. Taking our order should be irrelevant with the busyness of the kitchen. And 5 minutes after finally being allowed to order they brought out some bread. Which again, could have been brought out a lot earlier whilst we were sat there waiting to place our order. Some of the waiters/waitresses were clearly trying to be nice, but it felt like it was their first shift with a lack of know-how and smoothness, but I put that down to management and training. And the front of house staff seemed a little flustered and stressed, which isnt really the vibe youre looking for in a place like this. So no, we wont be going back.
Amazing burgers at their burger night! I could barely finish it. Wine and atmosphere to match. Will definitely come back
Had a fantastic 6 course dinner in their restaurant. The portions are just big enough to satisfy but small enough for six courses.. Great cook and very good service. You can also choose a 4 course dinner. Although theres no wine pairing, the staff gives excellent advice on the best wine to accompany each course.
Breakfast was delicious
Excellent food! Friendly & patient staff. It was an awesome experience.
Rickey, the chef, just gets better and better. Just like the food, the front of house team are also the perfect mix of both extremely competent and relaxed. Christmas lunch this year was a triumph. The strongest recommendation; just go there.
Good kitchen, nice food and good wines
Wine and location, incredible! Food and service just lacked a bit, felt rushed, lots of tough competition in the area but you need to be on your A game.
Wonderful fresh food. Efficient and warm waiters. Super cool chef.
Beautiful views and just as good food. We had the 3 course lunch.
Lovely food, great views and fab staff 😀👍
Well priced family restaurant with the most amazing views of the Hemel en Aarde valley.
Fabulous view, wine and food! The chicken liver creme caramel and head-to-toe pork risotto was the firm favourite. Will definitely recommend a drive up the valley for lunch.
The 3 course menu was delicious and creative, the service was attentive and the wine is above average. Will go back again.
Food, wine and service was perfect. Unique fresh flavours. Highly recommended.
Nice view, nice wine awesome chefs
Food outstanding, great atmosphere and good service
Astounding taste adventure. Chef Rickey Broekhoven and his team are culinary wizards and the view is unforgettable.
Spectacular food - sirloin (and fries with aoli) to die for! Good portion size. Superb pinot noir! Great views and good service. Highly recommended.
A great experience in a great venue. Food was bang in and enjoyed with the Estates Pinot Noir. A view to die for.
Lovely pinots, helpful service, outstanding views, and great food.
Great place for food but the wines are to die for
High quality menu and wine
The food was fantastic, and the views from the restaurant breath taking
Superb. Honesty one of the best dining experiences Ive ever had. The food was simply sublime.
Dont know, was 1 hour there before closing time and did want to serve us. The menu looked good
Delicious lunch with amazing views, we stopped by chance on route to hermanus and its ended up being one of the nicest meals of our trip to South Africa.
Fantastic view, great food, nice wine, loved the visit
Didnt try the food, but family say the white wines are incredible
Spectacular views of the Valley and tasty food with thoughtful attention to textures make for unforgettable meals at this upmarket venue
The tuna tartare is very delicious. Such a great starter.
Absolutely divine food and very good service.
E excellent
Gorgeous place, with astonishing view of wine valley, and great place for a dinner. It was a pleasure to spend there evening with glass of great wine.
Best meal I have had in a long time
Beautiful
Great restaurant! The deconstructed lasagne to start is an absolute winner!
Wow what a beautiful view and awesome wines...
The food is very tasty and the wine compliments it.
Newton Johnson was my favorite restaurant. However the I was a little dissapointed with my last visit. The waitres did explain that they are no longer offer fine dining. The first course was amazing however I was extremely dissapointed in the second course. My mother and sister had the fish corse. It was wonderful and looked great. I ordered the steak. I compared my food with the previous times I visited and honestly was so dissapointed I didnt even finish my meal. It was literally n piece of streak on a plate with chips and salad. I can go to any restaurant if I wanted that. It just looked like there was no effort put into it. The steak was dry event though I asked for medium rare. It is horrible for a restaurant that was in the top 10 restaurants in South-Africa not to long ago to be serving such dissapointing food
Newton Johnson Vineyards is owned and managed by the Newton Johnson family. The farm is based in the upper Hemel en Aarde Valley near Hermanus. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley has seen an explosion of quality Pinot Noir over the last decade, and the Newton Johnson Pinots are world class. We love their wine almost as much as a we love going for meetings in their tasting room and restaurant.
Good food coupled with local wines
Lovely environment and enjoy good wine.
Im working there is a good place to be
Fantastic wines and a great restaurant. I can definitely recommend this place to anyone.
Amazing views, delicious food and great wines!
