The Outeniqua Power Van Ride was Very enjoyable and truly spectacular!Very interesting information given about the history, fauna and flora, etc. by our guide Lorain.Just Very Disappointed that the Transport Museum was closed… on a Saturday! And we were not told when we booked our tickets. (Not everyone can go back during the week to visit) So make sure to ask when booking your ride.

Amazing experience. Super friendly conductor and tour guide. Very affordable. The driver also stopped at an unscheduled stop so that we could drink some fresh water from the mountain stream. He was super accommodating, funny and patient with our group which had so many kids. This is definitely an experience to go for. The kids truly enjoyed it, as well as the adultsHighly recommended. The views are simply stunning, words can not do justice.

Views are spectacular, we even got to see the waterfalls as we went after a good rain. The van however is rather old and noisy. This meant it was very difficult to hear what the conductor was saying or explaining. It is quite a long trip, about 2 and a half hours in total including the 30min stop for a picnic. Kids can get restless and pay almost full price as well. Price is a little high in my opinion for a trip with the family. Something to do once though.

If ever you come to George you have to take this train ride...it takes you high up in the mountains with breathtaking views while you get educated about the old routes that people use to take to get around. Amazing experience which end with a picnic spot to eat your food and stretch your legs

Two 50 year old vans rattle and shake you up the mountain on rails built over one hundred years ago. At times you cross Montagu Pass the first constructed route across the range. Nostalgic with some stunning views.

A wonderful experience. We treated ourselves by booking out the coach. the history of the place is fascinating and the views are spectacular. A great gift for someone if you are looking for something, unique and special. You are taking up the mountain pass and stop along the way you take in breathtaking views to George below you.

Absolutely beautiful! A fantastic experience to do as a family. Gorgeous picnic spot with views for ever all around. You go through more than 5 tunnels! You see the most spectacular views as you go higher and higher. Takes about 2 1/2 hrs and its well worth every minute.

The power van is ineptly run, there is no staff to answer queries, no one answers thier phone, the office is closed, despite having a sign out front stating they are open (and all museum staff stating there was a person there earlier) this is the second time I have come to this museum, and the second time I wanted to ride the van, the first time was a Sunday, and the van does not run on a Sunday, today is a Tuesday... with no one to take a booking, or even sell me a ticket. I have no idea how this business keeps going!!!Edit: the next day, we managed to get a booking and went for a ride, earning them an extra star (from 1) the ride was better than expected (and my expectations were pretty low) nice sites to see and interesting little tidbits of information. It is suggested to call ahead to the pub (oppi spoor) at the end of the line for a pub lunch (dont expect much more).

Have yet to actually take a trip on the Outeniqua Power Van, but I intend on booking a seat soon! It was out of service for quite a while due to the recent fores fires that caused some damage to the tracks, but it is back up and running now.Phone the museum to check for services before hand as weather does play a role.

The trip up the mountain pass in the Powervan is the only excursion on Steel Wheels in the Southern Cape. The view is stunning, and the seven tunnels traversed are unique on this line. This is an experience not to be missed. Well done to the operator.

I really enjoyed the train ride with my folks, however the train does screech when travelling on the tracks. The conductor also hoots the horn each time the train crosses the road and that is also loud. The noise is however bearable. The trip on the power van is around 2 hours and takes you to scenic spots on the mountainside with a stop for a picnic in the mountains. It is quite beautiful. Good for a slow days activity in George.

We have cycled Montagu pass, so going by power can was a unique experience. This was our 6th wedding anniversay, and we both had a lovely experience. Brought back many memories of when I worked on the railways in the early 80s. Sad to see rail infrastructure in such a bad shape, though.

I didnt enjoy the experience today due to the way were treated. We had 3 carriages and 2 carriages were filled with whites only and 1 carriage was filled with non whites. There was a white family in front of us and the lady conductor said to them you not in this carriage and only after take off I noticed the discrimination. (I also have photos and videos to prove this). Really after 25 years of democracy we still have this situation in our Country. Very disappointing.

Review №54

Its false advertising. Power Van is diesel powered not electricity, beach route is only 1/4 on the beach, the rest is via fields next to the highway so if you are going for scenic route better drive your car next to the beach. Train stops by old train station and we are being told to go to old and smelly bar not to a clean restaurant next to the station seemingly just because do organizers have some insensitive? Half tour is in English half is in Afrikaans so if you are foreigners you will miss out on half of the information. Speakers in second wagon were faulty so also you wont be able to hear some information if you sit there. Overall not worth the price

The Outeniqa Power Van provides a scenic trip by rail into the mountains passing through several tunnels. Spectacular views of the mountains and scenery gives plenty opportunities for great photos. Stopping for a picnic on the way back this outing will always be one to embark on if visiting the George area. The OPV operates from the Transport Museum even on rainy days. Due to the popularity of this trip it is advised to book in advance.

Worst experience ever. We were only informed after the train departed that due to the recent fires in the Outeniqua Pass that we will be travelling to Groot Brak Rivier instead. Nothing to see on this route. At the turn around point we (including my 3 year old grandchild) had to go into a pub to buy some water to drink. The pub smelled like cigarette smoke so badly that we had to sit under a tree on someone elss property. After an hour we were called back to the train just to find out that there is a problem with the train and we had to stand in the sun waiting for the train to be fixed. Will not recommend this to anybody. Very disappointed. Total waste of my holiday money.

It is a large hall in which they display old classic cars, trains, the history of trains in South Africa and the chronological development to our current era .. even buses and wagons and the trailer itself from utensils and so on old photos ... and then there is a trip to the mountains of George, a single-person ticket for 160 rand Equivalent to 40 riyals, which is a small trailer that takes you to the mountain for an hour and a text in which they explain the history of the railway roads and the types of plants that grow in these areas and about the animals and the history of road construction in the mountains and you pass the tunnels and the beautiful views from the mountain at a height of approximately 2000 feet and the train stops A 15-minute break, it is preferable to bring a snack during the trip.
