A wonderful, spotlessly clean and interesting museum, with a great display of old South African Railway locomotives and coaches as well as old vintage vehicles and other railway memorabilia. It also houses the Power Van diesel coach train that goes up the Montagu Pass on the old railway track. This museum is an example of how museums in South Africa should be looked after and run.A definite must for any visitor to George, whether a railway enthusiast or not.
Definitely a “must see” in George! Lots to see and well maintained. The biggest disappointment for the kids was that we did not have a 1p coin for the ancient chocolate vending machine. If you are planning on taking the power van up the mountain, it might be a good idea to phone in advance. They were not running while we were there and nobody could tell us what their normal times are or why the operators were not there on the day.
Amazing railway history and quite a few old cars. A must for people who like trains and cars from the past. The power van ride is a lovely experience... taking you 25kms up the mountain where a short stop is allowed for a picnic... Amazing views and running commentary from the staff.
Wonderful walk through SA transport history from planes, trains to firetrucks. Need cash for the ticket only R20 per family. Kid friendly and the perfect activity on a rainy day. You will spend about 1hr here. You even get to a climb on one of the steam engines!
Well worth seeing and doing the train ride into the Berg. Very well organised and a good day out especially for the kids.
What a wonderful place. The trains are so beautiful and well maintained. The staff are kind too. They have a wonderful car collection with cars from all around the world. This is a must see in George, for sure. You arent allowed to get into most of the trains but they are great to look at. Amazing peices of history and so well kept. I had a great time.
Beautiful museum..we really enjoyed learning about our past transport system 👌👌👌
Fascinating look back at the history of transport, in particular railways, in South Africa ... well worth the R20 entrance donation and a couple of hours or more of anyones time. Theres also a bonus attraction in the form of a private collection vintage vehicles !!
Old Memories, history well looked after.
Beautiful experience takes you back to memory lane.
Extremely interesting, a lot of info of historical transportation. Awesome seeing all the different transport trains etcetera
A must to see and see good old days.
Lovely place to go. Lots of old trains and cars to see. The power van is amazing with spectacular views. Great family experience
It took me back in time...to when I was a little boy..we stayed close to a railway line..I always was fascinated by the big steam engines as they huffed and puffed smoke and steam in the air. Our house wasnt that far from the train station for me to hear how they started pulling out with some drivers just knew how to draw attention by giving the pistons just that little bit to much steam for the wheels to spin and make that quick few power puffs..and then start over again with slow deep louder puffs...but so silently fading away to make place for new technology... boring diesel electric engines...
Great place to see the steam locomotives, cars. Even horse drawn carts. Old train carriages and a beautifully set up model trains.Museum is spotless.
A wealth of history! Walking down the aisles with all those old steam trains and the vintage car collection is incredible. It just shows you how far weve come and how not much has changed to date regarding the modes of transport we use.The place is well kept and theres plenty to see. Its rather interesting and exciting -makes a good activity for both young and old.Safe parking is available and R20 gets you in. Information is displayed digitally next to some of the items on display.
This is a great place if you interested in the transport system in South Africa
My husband loves it and he was only there virtually via video call with me
Great value for money and a must for any car or train guys .
If youre visiting George and like history the transport museum is a worth a visit. There are many detailed train displays, model trains, classic cars and lots of railroad memorabilia. Best to go on Wednesday or Saturday as thats when the model train displays are open and you can pop a coin in and watch the model trains run. The model train guys are pretty knowledgeable
This is a very interesting place to visit in George. Whether you are interested in trains or not, you will find it very interesting. There is so much history and well preserved really old things to see. You wont be disappointed
So nice to see old trains, trucks and classic cars. Large model railroad.. Coin operated so take some R5 coins along.
A lovely journey, winding through tracks and tunnels, a blast from the past.
A well maintained museum! Lovely to relive the days of steam trains!A wonderful find was the Power Van trips up the Outeniqua Mountains that leave from the Museum. Spent a lovely 3hr journey with 30min for a picnic on the Power Van. Highly recommended!!
This is primarily a train museum and just on that alone it is impressive. By far the largest collection of engines Ive ever seen in one location with many displays set up inside of the carriages. A local train club appears to operate out of here too and runs a dining experience inside a carriage. The old platform has a train pulled in but was closed off during our visit.Where it becomes a transport museum is with the large collection of old cars. While not impressive by some dedicated car museums in other countries, the variety of cars on show is impressive for South Africa, with more than a few being truly rare for this part of the globe. There is also a large amount of train and transportation related reading material available. If you are a train enthusiast, you could likely spend a full day here.At 20R per person, it is great value.
This is a great experience, a journey into a different era of transport and elegance. If you love trains, old cars, history and read adventure books as a kid, this is the place to visit.Theres ample parking, and its just off the main road, so its easy to find. There are different exhibits that show different aspects of railway and transport history - from the engines that were used to build and maintain railway lines, to fine old luxury trains that show the elegance and style of yesteryear. Its a great way to step into the past for a while. Theres also a fantastic selection of old cars, and all sorts of unexpected, interesting exhibits and memorabilia to surprise you. Take your time, its a big place and bears exploring in depth.
Loved the old trains, wagons and many other vehicles on display. The warehouse which displays these relics is huge but spotless. Very friendly staff. Power Van trip was wonderful.
Brilliant! Always has your attention. Various trains & cars. Not to mention the miniature town created. Must see!
Very nice. Just take cash, no card facilities
Awesome experience a must do when in George!
What a walk down memory lane...so good for the mind and soul....
This museum is just classy. It has so much good collection that any novice and expert will equally be amused. It has a good class and assembly of old-model trains, how these worked, on what routes, and cars, planes ships, and public and private buses and vans too.. Mainly I would say its a Train/Rail museum. It highlights the beauty of British-led era. Simply wonderful! A must go place, esp for kids and families.
Beautiful displays. Old enough cars and trains. Very clean and tranquil. Interesting reads... Very affordable and safe. Take time and see all... Well done.
Absolutely mind blowing and the history is so interesting! Well kept and clean museum.
An amazing place to visit. It was great to walk back in time and look at the history of travel and trains in South Africa. Also a lot of beatyfull old cars. A must visit place if you are in the area.
Fascinating museum of a world of grand railway journeys that no longer exist in South Africa. Some of the highlights for me was the carriages from the white train used by the British Royal when traveling through the Union and Rhodesia in 1947, a drawn carriage from the 1952 Van Riebeeck Festival and extensive model train sets from the Railway Society. The only disappointment is that the restaurant seems to be closed. Definitely worth the visit and a cut above some of the other museums in the area.
A unique museum that captures the atmosphere of the giants of SAs great railway past. Beautifully preserved and a labour of love and pride.
This transport museum is really awesome in that you get to see how people in 1800 and early 1900s used to travel , without the luxury known to us today. Trains, trams, emergency vehicles, even vintage cars can be seen at this museum. Only reason 5 stars were not given is because its super hot inside , no aircon, no fans in museum and it is alot of walking involved. If its a hot day in George, prepare to have a sweaty walk through the museum. The train ride was fantastic.... regardless of the heat. You book at a seperate office inside the museum, r180 for adults and r160 for kids. 40 people fit into 3 seperate train carriages and travel from George to Grootbrakriveier station where you stop and have a picnic or grab a bite at the restaurant ( I recommend packing your own basket as service at restaurant at Grootbrakriveier station is pathetic)
Well kept exhibition of old railway equipment. Also vintage cars on display. Very interesting.
Dedicated staff. Really interesting. Then took the power an up the mountain
An interesting place for any train enthusiast, but its very sad that it is being so neglected. It requires urgent attention to maintain the historic value of the exhibitions.
Enjoyed the visit..make sure you go on summers day.
Its clean and neat. However, on arrival we learned that we need to pay in cash. So back to the bank to draw some money. Its mind boggling that in these (covid) times we still have to handle cash.
The museum itself is absolutely fantastic to see, but management is terrible. The museum is closed on weekends, when most people have a chance to come and see and are not working. Secondly when you go in to book for the power van trip, the security locks you inside and wont open again. People were extremely upset. The steam locomotives inside is a dream come true to see, the old cars and everything inside looks great, it is just unfortunately I dont have time during the week, and only have the weekend to visit the museum.
Great history of SA train, railway, transport. Enjoyable for children and adults. well maintained, huge museum. highly recommend for visiting.
Very interesting museum ..lots to see and learn
The good;Very affordable entrance feeAmazing relicsWell looked after displaysThe bad;Very dull and somewhat lifelessLimited labelling and story tellingNot arranged in chronological orderThe model train room opens twice a weekThe ugly;Extremely poor lightingNot interactiveNo air conditioning so its a hot warehouse
An interesting walk down memory lane. Thank you for an informative tour by the Railway association volunteers who were passionate about the history of the railroad in SA. Their model trains were lifelike and proof of their commitment to the heritage of SA Railroads
Very impressed! It was clean and HUGE.
Nice to see transport history being saved for the future. Always clean and well kept in this museum.
The car collection is amazing!!!Loved the place, a bit dark inside.
Excellent place. Brings back memories.
Awesome experience. Take at keadt 2 hours 2 walk through
Awesome museum, very nicely laid out..Power van was working again, up the mountain, broke down at the top but all ended well. An enjoyable day out!!
A great outing spent about an hour there. Feels like you travel back in time.
The place is amazing and a must see. However, the maintenance has been neglected over the years, the route guidance marks are confusing. But the little coffee shop im the train is awesome! You can even have a beer and sandwiches/pies -but bring cash! No card facilities.
Very interesting trip back in time.
Had lots of fun! Enjoyed the train ride
Great museum for automotive fanatics... The museum has several locomotives and informations about them and also several gorgeous cars.
If you love trains (or have a little one that does), this is the place for you. View different trains and other transporation, learn a bit of history and take a train ride on the Outeniqua Choo Choo. We took a mini choo choo ride up the old pass. It was an amazing experience with the most beautiful view. At the turning point around the top we had a picnic with a stunning view. Afterwards we returned to the museum where I was very impressed by the old vintage car collection. Great place to visit. This is well worth a stroll through if you are in the area.. Well worth a visit, for a nominal fee you can relive the grand old train travels, the beautiful crockery and cutlery on the white train which transported the king on his South African visit and the children can see the many model trains
Clean and beautiful! Trip down memory lane
It was a great experience and the scenery so beautiful! The driver and guide both go out of their way to make the tour memorable and comfortable.
Quite interesting to see steam locomotives and vintage cars. Talk about cutlery as well, enjoyed with my family 🥰🙏🙏
Shows history of railroads in South Africa. Very well kept.
Good variety. Sometimes few descriptions but all in all a good experience.
If you want to experience hospitality and professionalism this is the place to be! Well done and a thumbs up for the people keeping this museum top quality 👏 . One amazing experience, well done.
Great selection of Old Trains and cars. A worthy place to visit in George
Nice trip down memory lane our kids enjoyed it as well
A fantastic museum with as absolute highlight the 2.5 hours train ride into the mountains.
Historic exhibition with well looked after trains, cars and far more.....a definate must is the power van trip!!!
Very great place for Automobile enthusiasts, very wide range of cars, trains, busses etc. Do take the power van ride
Very interisting and facenating, well worth a visit- Well preserved and kept. Trip on the Outeniqua power van is a must. Good collection of classic cars on display aswell.
Great to see a glimpse at the history of transport in SA
Very interesting exhibits but---. Phone not answered, pers say R5 wil operate all model trains but it did not and lights needed to read some info and also in dining car.
Beautiful trains and cars on display. A bit short on guides.
Problem with the lighting but I loved the museum.
