Butcher Block never disappoints. Theyve got the best ribs ever, Good music and great service.

A relaxed atmosphere to just chill with family and friends. Situated in the Umhlanga Plaza. Only managed to get a pic of my meal. Enjoyed a delicious grilled fish and prawns with chips and tartare sauce. Definitely looking forward to eating there again. Covid protocols followed. Kid friendly. You can easily stroll down to the pier and catch a glimpse of the waves crashing against the rocks.

Very disappointed with this restaurant. The waiter was very friendly and welcoming and they are Covid 19 compliant, but that’s about it for these guys. The Greek salad did not look good and it had lettuce with brown edges with ordinary feta, unlike the Greek salad at Butcher Boy’s, which is the same price but looks better and has Danish feta. I ordered my steak medium rare to medium, but my first steak was well done. Not good for a steakhouse or for my date who ate alone while I watched. The second steak was rare, but I had to eat it, because I couldn’t wait for another one to be cooked. Both our steaks were tasteless and required lots of salt and sauce to make it taste better. Disappointing, since they only serve the premium steaks on their menu. I will definitely not recommend this restaurant.

Great atmosphere, absolutely friendly waitress ( Rose). Made our anniversary special with a complimentary dessert. Food prepared to perfection. Definitely my favorite restaurant.

Despite the unbelievably slow service in a restaurant that wasnt even at half capacity, I decided 4 stars are appropriate. My favourite thing about the decor was the lighting, it was warm and calming. It seems like theres sorcery at play; theres more light than would be expected from the visible lamps. The food was splendid, the steak was done appropriately (medium), my friends mushroom and spinach thingy was good too. Ill be going to this joint again, but not if Im feeling impatient

Sadly wont return. Most of the items were out of stock and on fathers day it was a sad experience. They only had wet aged steak which is far more expensive and tasted terrible. Asked for medium steak and got well done and by the time my new steak arrived, the rest of the table had finished eating. The bill arrived and for 6 people I would have preferred to eat at Spur for half the price and for far tastier meals.

The balcony area could use some lighting at night but overall experience was not so bad.

What a Gem of a restaurant Butcher Block at Gateway was today.Elton our waiter what a character he sure knows his game.World class service and what top class food.The Oxtail with Mash was mouth watering.Chicken fillet and veggies tops.My daughter had a veg dish also top class.The Melva pudding with Custard and Ice cream that Sweetie made was the best we have ever eaten.So people if you have not eaten there book now you will love it.

I had just come from their restaurant. When entering I had noticed the R89.00 lunch special. The advertisement states one selected meal and the choice of a red or white wine. The fine text also stated that if you would not like the wine you could exchange it for a soft drink or juice no extra cost. If you wanted another side besides chips you would need to pay an extra R10.00.The waiter insisted that wine was only allowed as per the managers order. We proceeded to then ask for the manager. We explained to him that it clearly states the wine my be substituted for a soft drink or fruit juice in the poster. His reply was that he had not yet replaced the advertising as the new one was still being printed ( to note is was a basic piece of paper ). We had brought up the false advertising and CPA,however, he did not care at all and still presented us with the wine. Absolutely disregarding everything we said. We were absolutely shocked by the managers disregard. The was little to no apology or any sign of way he could make it up to us.We were very disappointed in the manager and he should be looked at by the owners! He clearly does not know how to manage or understand what the impact of false advertising is. If anyone bothers to get back to me I have proof of the advert and I know who the manager is.This can not be taken out on the waiters as they are simply going what they are told.Due to this I will not be eating at that branch again.

Fantastic steak. The signature dishes are more than substantial and the combinations were over the top but lovely. My green beans were a tad stringy but other than that, our dinner was lovely.

Staff extremely friendly and helpful, particularly given there was a large party of diners celebrating a birthday at the same time as I arrived. Nice setting. Extensive wine list and menu focused around grill but with plenty of options. Ordered chicken livers to start and steak/calamari combo to follow. Chicken livers were tasty and very spicy, served with good bread, but the flavour was a bit too focused on spice without other dimensions to my taste. Steak was asked for rare but seemed more medium rare, and unfortunately came covered in a red wine jus that hid the flavour of the meat (which seemed really decent) - Id have preferred this on the side. Squid was nice (I went for grilled) and seemed fresh. Chips were a bit soft (not crispy) and while the dusting of chilli powder was nice could have done with a bit more crunch. Overall quite average but could be much better with a couple of changes.

Overcooked steak. Sauce dripping in booze. Charged an extra R65 for sauce that is advertised as part of the dish, food recommended that I wouldnt serve to a dog. Mocktail thats tastes like a watered downed moothie no flavour no syrup no mint. Just gross. Brownies that have no flavour, no. Choc sauce and smells rancid Calmari that would have been great if it was served with tartar sauce, salt and pepper. Or utensils, lousy for a restaurant that is supposed to support the dinner service at the Holiday Inn. Had to follow up as our order took forever. Very expensive for less than average Bland awful food.Tiny lamb Shank the worst I ever tasted zero flavour rubbery so tough it would not come off the bone and packet sauce that tasted burnt. You will Never see us. Tried twice and spent over R1500. Gross cheers.

Booked for dinner for my dads birthday. Our waitress Zama was so attentive although the restaurant was packed to capacity. She was sweet and friendly and made sure that everything we ordered was brought to use in a timely manner. All the staff we interacted with were pleasant. For starters we orders garlic and herb snails and stickey chicken wings. My dad enjoyed the snails which were served with crispy bread to mop up the garlic and herb butter. The chicken wings were so tender and flavourful. For mains we had a chicken flattie with BBQ sauce, a fillet steak with added mushroom sauce and a T-bone all served with delicious veggies (buttery mash, butternut and green beans). The steaks were done perfectly. Super soft, tender and juicy. The portions are very generous as you can see from the caccompanying photos. They were also kept the cake that I brought in the fridge until we were ready for it. Zama brought it out on anoyhrt platter with spoons and plates for us and they had even placed the numbers and candles and lit them for us as well. We will definitely be back! Thank you for the fantastic service!!

Great service. Meat and busting sauce was delicious but I asked for medium rare but it was medium to well. That was the only problem. otherwise I loved the place and food!

The food is like exactly how you imagine your TV show cooking stars to make their food. Its beautiful and tastes exactly how you want it to. Lol noticed all the art is cows which is interesting considering thats statistically what youre likely to be eating. There is also this twistie bread looking abstract piece which is nice. Music was good for the vibe. Will definitely swing by here again! 10/10 to the waitron too!

Food was amazing, service was amazing. We ended up going there three nights in a row due to the quality of the restuarant and its staff. Our waiter Raegan did an excellent job despite it being busy. Definitely would visit it again.

Great setting. Very romantic and classy. Waiters are friendly and efficient.Food was OK. Steak wasnt treated with enough love and the seasoning was lacking. Veggies were OK, nothing to rave about. Its an all around average evening for an above average price.I move to a 4 star rating based on the response from the owner. Thank you for that. We will definitely be back and will post from a fresh perspective.

Ive been wanting to go here for ages and since it was my birthday yesterday my fiance surprised me with dinner here. My G&T was great and our waitress Phumi was the absolute best, shes a star. However our steaks were very bland and the hot plate wasnt hot by the time it got to us. I really enjoyed the mash it was sublime but I did expect more. Maybe because it was busy thats why but I do wish to have a better experience in the future and I wouldnt rule them out. Still better most places.

Shisanyama platter, pork ribs, lamb shank you will not regret it. The dishes came with pap, chips and chakalaka. It was worth the wait. Had time to do some reading with my daughter. Highly recommended.

Overall good dining,with very attentive waiters/waitresses,steaks done to perfection,definitely one of my favorite restaurants,very tranquil with ambient setting.

I know that its a difficult time with the lockdown and riots experienced recently, but there is no excuse for a bad steak.

Ate there for lunch but after placing our order we were forgotten about. An hour later and still no food. Waitress didn’t even apologise nor did the manager.

Great food and atmosphere, although got very loud towards the end, probably due to a few large tables. Both my girlfriend and I had the lambshank which was tender and well made and not overly fatty or full of gristle, when youre paying for a lambshank you want the best cuts. Our waitress was attentive and friendly and it was a great evening all round. Would definitely go back.

Butcher block umhlanga is neat and tidy with a good variety of meats, tasty chips and mash. Salads looked really good. Desert served well with the Malva pudding being the choice of my day, went down well. Sadly the view that seemed to be once of the best things will soon be no more as the newest development project will put the restaurant into darkness and block most of the view. What a pity..

I would recommend the oxtail as well as the lamb shank both absolutely flavoursome meat was perfectly done for both dishes. The service was brilliant, very professional. Not the most child friendly but they did a very good job to accommodate my son and they have a lovely kiddies menu over all experience was that it was very enjoyable.

Best steak in South Africa. They do know how to cook a steak to the right temperature. Their sauces are also amazing . My wife had the srimp and they were just beautifully cooked. Highly recommended. I just wanted to have had more meals in this restaurant.

One of the best experiences. Food was excellent. Service was great. I personally recommend the red eye steak or the ribs.The only downfall was that their lanterns dont work which made sitting outside a bit of a schlep.

I have so many regrets about this place. The waiter convinced me to order a large meal only to realize later that I was resold a rejected meal.The wings were burnt and the waiter convinced me to spend more money on so much food that I didnt need, and told me the cheaper meal only came with 3 chicken wings. Imagine.When my plate arrived there was so much. I was exhausted. I only realized later what had happened. I wondered why my food came so quick, only to realize it had been reheated and served to me.ReplyOkay.So number 1. Why were they burnt?2. Why did your waiter misinform me when he told me theyd be less than what they actually were.3. How long does it take to prepare an order? Because mine literally took less than 2 minutes.

Went for the Sunday lunch buffet. Was an excellent choice of mains. The lamb curry was very tasty even though I like it hotter. The lamb and chicken roasts were very good and there was a good choice of salads.No deserts were on offer with the buffet which was a bit sad(would probably be worth their while to offer a small selection of cheap deserts as a lot of people would not eat as much meat to save space for desert with the meat being far more costly than desert)Would recommend as was a good meal and good value for money.

Excellent value for money, wonderful customer service and the food was superb. The only negative factor is finding the actual restaurant. There is a lack of clear, bold signage which is a shame as this particular branch of Butchers Block is worth the visit.

By far the best steak I have had from the 10 countries I have traveled too. The 600 g primerib steak was full of flavour and cooked to perfection. The manager was very friendly only disappointment was the waiter who showed his disapproval of me tipping him 7percent . I wouldve tipped ten percent but his service wasnt that great . Nevertheless I highly recommend this steak house and cant wait to visit again.
