Was here 25 years ago.Has not lost any of its charm.Still the same splendid old-fashioned atmosphere.Add to this the nice people,who work here,the excellent food and the luxurious rooms and one has plenty of reasons to come back.Thank You.

Why go to a chain restaurant when you can go to this grand old lady? Very reasonable menu. Wine starting at R45 per glass or enjoy coffee and a slice of decadent cake (R50 for a slice). Lovely patio area or sit inside the elegant restaurant. Not a place for small kids, unless you take something to keep them occupied. Very friendly staff who ensure you are well taken care of. A beautiful and charming venue that has so much history.

My wife and I stayed here about 1 1/2 years ago, a late and well deserved review! ALL the staff were excellent. Emmanuel Manda is the only name I have and his great attitude and service exemplified that which we experienced through out the hotel. We’ll stay there again.

Reception was great and the check in was seemless,especially when you made a prior reservation. Otherwise, Im impressed with the level of professionalism displayed on my reception.

The staff and service was absolutely amazing the manager, GM, kitchen staff and cleaning staff were absolutely amazing wonderful and so accommodating, books were clean and tidy…. Definitely a 5 - Star stay

We went here on a whim after seeing their specials for lunch posted outside the hotel. Was sceptical as some hotels are very pricey. After looking at the menu my son and husband had the fillet steak and my future daughter inlaw and i had the tandoori chicken. My daughter had the wing and rib special and my grandson the pizza special. Wow. Compliments to the chef. A steak so perfectly done(we only do medium done steak) perfect inside and out. It literally melted in your mouth. The chicken and the rest of the dishes were just as good. Will definitely come back.

I love this hotel. The staff is efficient and very friendly. I had breakfast and dinner there and the food was delicious, they had a lot of options. My room wasnt sea facing but it was clean and neat. I enjoyed my stay.

Christmas Day 2019 lunch ... absolutely fantastic. The chef came to our table which was wonderful. Told him I had one problem and that was that I was unfortunately getting full!Hats off to the chef and his team. We will be there next year. Thank you!

Stayed for a week, yummy breakfast & delicious meals served every evening. My room was super clean until the last day. Loved swimming pool & gym area, keep up the good work!

Excellent staff very responsive and accommodating when problems are reported. The hotel is a work in progress and work is going on to improve it making it worth supporting. I would stay there again if I go to Durban. Comfortable, central and clean. Pics attached are views from the hotel room. I did not take pics of the room.

Covid regulations are compromising yhe guest interests

I booked in the hotel i got at the hotel at 8 pm at 10 pm the power went of i was told by the hotel it was load shedding and by 12.30 the power will return so without air conditioning and any plug points work in our both rooms i waited. Until that time the power was still off so i told the guys i would like to check out they must refund my money back but the still said me to wait until 2 am it will definitely come back on so i waited in this hotel room with the heat at 4 am the power still didnt return so i checked out. But they didnt even give me my refund. I was told i cant get back my money.

Protea hotels has always kept their great standards. I have enjoyed my stayed there. The service was excellent. Staffs were friendly and professional. The food was delicious. Great view of the ocean in the front. The front of the hotel is too busy and may not be advisable to walk alone, but there are security around. Ill recommend it

The hotel looks nice on the outside and the lobby area. However they need to do upgrades to the rooms. But we had a beautiful view of the Indian Ocean. The food was good and the front desk staff.

My mom was very happy with the stay. Breakfast too expensive. I loved the table setup for Christmas at the lobby. We really enjoyed the Christmas Cake.

Warm and helpful staff. Great location overlooking the great Indian Ocean. One just has to extra vigilant when you step outside the hotel.

Excellent service and friendliness of staff. Little details not becoming of 4 star status were things such as grubby tile grouting in the bathroom, tap mixer covers missing. Would be nice to see a change of artwork more inclusive of all SA taste. Decolonise the decor to be more welcoming to all guests.

I had a good time at Durban Protea Hotel. Breakfast was nice and what I like the most is the view of the beach by the window at the Hotel and it only took me 5 minutes walk to the beach. Staff so friendly and the hotel is clean. Good hospitality indeed.

This overlooking the sea hotel will have you enjoy your Durban experience and prompt you to come back with your family and friends for the fun of Durban. Everything is on a walking distance and if you are situated on the sea view room than you will enjoy the Durban life by the beach whether in the early hours of morning or the night amazingness of the beach and it activities. Come down for your special occasion or in summer to dine and wined it this auspicious establishment and ask for them to recommend place to go to for fun and they will be happy to tell you where to go and book you a transport service to take you and return you to your destination. Very Clean, Friendly Staff👌

Stayed as part of a team for a sports event. Room sizes were good with a great range of television channels. We ate at the resturant for buffet breakfast and dinner, couldnt reccomend this highly enough, the food was amazing! The desserts each night were definitely the highlight. Staff were very welcoming and always wanting to help where they can.

The hotel room was fantastic with a great view. I wish I could say the same with the food. The buffet was terrible it was just full of rice and less meat. The ice cream was not even frozen for the dessert. I would definitely not come back for the food. This was not value for money.Please note that i was in Protea Fire and Ice Cape Town with a very nice buffet. The buffet was balanced and had different meat to choose from.This guys really need to learn a lot from Fire & Ice when it comes to food.Slept at fire and ice for 2 nightsAnd at Protea Edward for one night

We spent our Valentines weekend at The Edward. Once again their service was excellent. Rooms were clean. I requested a balcony room and got it.Balcony view was the best.Staff are friendly and helpful. Such a beautiful hotel in Durban.

The hotel is definitely dated and has not been updated in a very long time.The location is great, but the rooms are not properly insulated so you hear noise from the street and beach even on the top floor.The air conditioner made a racket that made a good night sleep difficult.Breakfast was ok but way expensive and not worth the price.Minimal recognition to Gold Elite members of Marriott Bonvoy.No response to feedback.Best to avoid.I asked to get the email of the Manager of the hotel as their response on Trip Advisor was pure pablum. No response. I asked again and was told that the person responding had forwarded my email to their manager. Again no response from the Manager.

The staff is absolutely amazing and so attentive especially in the restaurant and the porters. The front desk folks were so sweet and fun. However, Jean from the front desk was kind of rude, so I am deducting a star (in case there is more than 1 lady named Jean, she was the middle aged Indian lady, maybe a manager). The hotel has great views of the beach, is conveniently located and is maintained very well.

Very friendly staff. Their treatment say come back anytime, from the guys at the reception to the chefs at the restaurant, even the cleaners. The staff really care about the visitors, I just wish the rooms were the same. If they can just give the rooms a facelift. The wall to wall carpets dont really serve the visitors any good, especially some of us who have a sinus problem. A fridge in the room will also be nice

I wasn’t there for staying, rather, the breakfast. It sure was fresh. But one turn off, the pastry they served for the meat was a bit sour, perhaps tomatoes..? IDK.

Reception staff was friendly and efficient. Valet service and porter was helpful. Security at drop off was friendly. Room service food wat good, except my wifes patty was raw on her burger. We signed for the bill to be added to our room, so we can pay on check out. This was around 7pm. 23:18 We get a call waking us and our babies up saying that something isnt right with the signature on the bill and they want to come to the room now to sort it out. I think this is highly unprofessional and irregular for a hotel of this standard to have employees doing stupid things like calling a patron at 23:18 to enquire about a bill. Seriously.

Mandisa at reception was the warmest lady who ensured i am moved to a suitable room and eve called me later to ask if i was still happy with the room i was changed to.Sli Zuma was an amazing chef i met during my stay at this hotel.The overall service from the staff is 10/10.

This seaside hotel is a home away from home and I have had five star treatment from the staff who really deserve six stars all the time I have been here. Class, elegance and highly responsive to your needs. Plus the food here never fails to impress. I love you guys at the Edward Protea Hotel.

Would definitely recommend if you are staying in Durban. Request a room looking over the beachfront and enjoy the lovely bar at night time. A real classic experience.

Please beware of this Hotel. They stole my credit card details and charged me for additional days as well as other costs when I had already left the Hotel. My telephonic conversations to resolve the issue with the Hotel were not fruitful as they kept on passing my problem from one person to the next. Thankfully my bank managed to recover my money. I would not recommend this hotel. There are plenty of other hotels around the area that wont steal from its patrons.
