Small intimate place. We loved the food and the lady helping us was very kind. They had generous food portions with a good variety on the menu. Just note it is towards the left side of the large glass building and at the back when you enter the estate and not the first restaurant.

We enjoyed the ambiance, and the setting of the restaurant. However we felt the waiter was having an off day. The kitchen had run out of a few things, which wasnt communicated with us properly , so we ended up with a very mismatched meal. I just think attention to detail would go a long way. But will definitely be back to give them another try.

This is one of our favorites. We love the friendly service, the food is delicious, and the setting is beautiful. We enjoy the moule mariniere and bone marrow as starters. The menu has something for the whole family, but the steak and pizza are our go to meals. You can bring your own wine, and they have a selection from respectable farms.

A small restaurant with lots of heart. Staff are amazing! Friendly, welcoming and very professional with just the right amount of attention given, even when they are super busy. View and surroundings seem like theyre taken right out of a fairly-tale with the mountain loaming close by. Food is next level good with portions that are well generously sized and cooked to perfection.

The fish and meat were well prepared and enjoyable, but the chips tasted like fish. We suspected they were fried in the same oil as for seafood. The waiter went to check, came back and confirmed the chips are fried in oil used for deep-frying calamari. Two of our party are allergic to seafood, like calamari.After the meal I went to speak to the chef, Tony. He was reluctant to chat. When I asked him about the oil, he seemed to confirm it, and very impolitely asked whats my issue. When I mentioned the allergy, he immediately said the waiter wasnt speaking the truth; it was his kitchen. In any case, he said, if I had a dietary problem I should let them know. Now any good restaurant doesnt use the same oil for chips and seafood. I believe the waiter because Tony doesnt fry the chips; the ordinary chefs do, AND they tasted like fish!Its really the attitude of Tony that stinks; dismissive, defensive and arrogant, and that after I first complimented him on the food - bar the fishy chips of course. I see others have complained about the owners bad attitude - I presume its Tony. Shame on you!!

Unfortunately the have no vegetarian starters on their menu. I was told they are unable to do their pastas as a starter portion for vegetarians. That would have been a simple solution and could make the restaurant more money. They world is changing - keep up. The food we had was very good. Service was average. Tables are quite close together.

Quite possibly the best baby squid I have ever had. One of our kids also tried it and loved it. Pizzas were also great which is what the boys had.Great vibe, friendly service and located at Uitsig, Constantia.

Relaxed atmosphere with great service and delicious pizzas. We never felt rushed and yet the service was quick and attentive.A thoughtful detail was the knee rug provided in case the weather was a bit chilly. There is plenty of fresh air.

Ive dined at La Grotto 3 times, with great experiences each time!The pizza was amazing with crispy thin bases and a surplus of toppings! the muscle pot was a personal winner for me and a fellow diner raved about the steak he had. Staff were friendly and very accommodating, overall a great experience, highly recommendable and I will be back!

Excellent meal.Good prices . Delicious kob , veal and awesome cheesecake. Our waiter wasnt great . Not focussed , long waits between service.Unfortunately ventilation very bad . Came out with our clothes smelling very strongly of food. Bit of a worry with covid, and bad air filtration .

Very disappointing meal last night after looking forward to trying out a new restaurant. Lovely venue and great service but our group of four all had pizzas. Two seafood ones, which sounded great arrived and had a very fishy smell. We immediately had flies buzzing around and the pizzas were not good at all. The other two pizzas were okay but very bland. Sadly we will not be back.

Fantastic food, personalized service, exceptional setting

This was our second visit to La Grotto, the previous occasion was earlier this year in February. On that occasion we were a smaller group of 4 seated at an open window on a beautiful Cape summer evening. We all ordered pizza, mine had their seafood topping, which I drizzled with their delicious olive oil and a sprinkling of chopped chili.The evening with long standing friends and a glass of really good Constantia Uitsig Sauvignon Blanc coupled with what was on that occasion probably the best pizza I have ever had was superb.Raving about that experience we convinced a larger group of 8 old friends to join us there. The evening was a lot cooler but the buzz inside still warm and friendly. Obviously I ordered their seafood pizza again and so did another in the group and it just never met with my expectations. Maybe it was due to the colder weather, but our pizzas cooled off quickly and became difficult to cut through and the seafood toppings including sizable strips of squid a few prawns and mussels in the shell also very quickly cooled down and became quite unsavory. Another in the group mentioned that the caramelized onions on her pizza was rather excessive and sweetened the taste somewhat and another mentioned that her toppings of have and mushrooms was rather sparse.Still the ambiance was warm and friendly the Uitsig wine is great and perhaps if we return well order pasta.

The setting is absolutely stunning. Couldnt wish for a better view. Parking is secure.The mussels with white wine, garlic and cream or Napoletana sauce, chilli and garlic is just mouth watering.The pizzas give any place in the Constantia Basin a run for their money - great toppings, delicious and hot.The veal mushrooms with 5 or 6 chips (fries) should probably be left in the Bambini section - its tiny!Service is great - thanks.All the best!

Good food at affordable prices

I ordered the Spaghetti Pescatore, a seafood pasta with a creamy, garlic, white wine sauce. Except it wasnt, the sauce was just tinned tomatoes, with no white wine or garlic to be found anywhere, the seafood was quite clearly the frozen PnP kind and was then overcooked and the spaghetti was not fresh either, it came out a packet. I am genuinely perplexed as to how they thought it was acceptable to serve that as a meal. I was raised with the attitude that you dont leave food on your plate but I was unable to manage more than 3 bites. I left hungry but unable to eat any more because I genuinely think that Im going to vomit the food made me so sick. There are so many nice restaurants in Constantia Uitsig, please dont go to this one! The worst part is that I wouldnt have left a bad review if the waiters, manager or chef actually gave a hoot but I didnt even get an apology.

I had a lovely eve here. Food was delicious all round, and staff were friendly and attentive. I will definitely be back!

An overall good experience

One star is too many. If there was a way to give a negative mark they deserve it. They misrepresent themselves as a family style restaurant. Our party of 6 adults and 5 young children had to endure the most diabolical treatment at the hands and mouths of the owners and another woman, possibly his wife. The owners and staff were inhospitable from the outset. Our children were playing outside on the small patch of grass while waiting for their food. When it came to the table we signaled them inside. As they were about to sit and eat the owner came flying out of the kitchen and bellowed at us that our kids were causing a disturbance and that it was now enough. It was also implied that playing on lawns is forbidden in the Uitsig precinct? This was the second time that he had approached out table with negative attitude. It was enough for us and as group we stood and made it quite clear that we would tolerate this no longer. On the way to the door he persisted with me and his wife came hurtling out of the kitchen threatening to call security and saying that they could tell us to go if they felt like it. At this stage the owner was right in my face, near the door, and even poked me in the chest (another less than favorable review indicates that verbal abuse is his norm anyway). All of this in front of 5 children under 7. We dine as group in the burbs regularly and have never been chastised for either our or our childrens behavior, because are not badly behaved It was totally unbelievable and unacceptable.So if you want to spend your money on bad attitude, zero atmosphere and all that is wrong with restauranting, then this is your place. But get there fast because I foresee a CLOSED sign in their very near future. It is not a question of when did they open but rather, when are they going to CLOSE. La GROTTY, It cannot be soon enough.

We ordered dishes that were written on the board, assuming theyd be specials and of fresh ingredients. One of us had the hake, which was at least a week old and terribly unpleasant. Other two had the penne prawns, which the server told us was served in a white wine and cream sauce. Alas, the sauce that arrived was a simple tomato one - the waiter still maintained the chef had said it would be cream. Restaurant was also very hot and the servers were too scared to ask the chef if tables could be moved around, windows opened, etc. Underwhelming experience.

Its a pity about this place. I went soon after it opened and had the marrow bone starter. It was delicious. Well roasted marrow bones and lovely fresh bread. I returned recently and ordered the same and, on my recommendation, so did one of my fellow diners.However this time, the marrow was very undercooked - so much so that it was pink and inedible - and the ciabatta bread was substituted with some slightly toasted baguette (which was obviously yesterdays bread). We pointed this out to the waiter. As he took our plates away - with no apology - we asked for a doggy bag for the bones so that at least our dogs could enjoy them as some sort of consolation.When we were presented with the bill, we were surprised to see that we had been charged for the marrow bones and told the waiter so. The waiter took the bill away and came back with the marrow bones duly deducted. Again no apology for either the bad food or the error on the bill from him or the owner. He then picked up the doggy bag saying the owner had told him to take it back as he would give the bones to his dogs. We saw the owner scuttling off to his car in the carpark. At no point did he approach our table to make amends.The message we got from him was stuff you, if youre not going to pay (for a bad meal), youre not going to have the bones either. The four of us agreed that we would not be going back.And, by the way, it still doesnt have a liquor licence and my fellow disappointed marrow eater said the lasagna was the worst he had ever experienced and left most of it.

Appalling attitude from senior staff/owner. Definitely not kid friendly. One of my worst restaurant experiences and left after being there for 20 minutes.

If zero stars was an option, thats the one I would have selected. Worst dining out experience of my life. I feel so sorry for the staff who work there, they seemed petrified of the (I presume) owner. While he was there, it certainly was NOT kid/family friendly as advertised. It was so bad, we left before ordering. I will never go there again.

I could eat here everyday

Absolutely terrible. I never complain and the way in which my friends but more importantly our kids were treated is absolutley appalling. I will never set foot there again and my kids being told they not welcome as it was blowing a gale and the wind slammed the door as they were trying to go out was the last straw. The owner was then shouting at us to control them . I have never been more upset in my life. The best was his wife running out the kitchen to say her husbands overaction was because of kids bad reaction. Imagine Turning atable of 10away. I also would not even give them a one star.i actually am so shocked by the shouting and reaction I actually cant even explain

The Kingklip terrific. Make sure to try their garlic focaccia, also brutal. Good price-quality, good portions, reserve before going, it is very small and they are almost always full. Very good attention from the staff. One of the first times that I see a 3.9 as a note in google about this restaurant and I am amazed, this restaurant is if more not a minimum 4.5.
