The Police Museum in Muizenberg otherwise known as the SAPS Museum, consists of the Police station as well as the adjoining old magistrate’s court. There are various examples and visual arrangements that portray criminal cases in a courtroom with the actual cells below. There are depictions of notorious criminal cases in the old court building as well as the old charge office. A courtroom, with cells below, gives school groups the opportunity to act out the court procedures. The exhibits include old charge sheets, notorious gang history as well as homemade weapons. The rest of the museum is filled with antique furniture, uniforms and police items and accessories that make out part of the exhibition. The museum was initially opened in June 1990 and had to be closed down a few years ago due to structural damage, but was re-opened earlier this year. by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko who said the artefacts stored in the museum, which include police uniforms, handcuffs and weapons, were proof of the transformation within SAPS. The apartheid system was an extremely expensive one to run, because your police in Transkei had their own uniform, and police in Venda had theirs, and Kwazulu-Natal and so on, he said. He said the museum clearly showed where the institution was now, and where it had been in history.Het Post Huis is also part of the museum complex. It was originally used as a lookout post for enemy ships entering False Bay. Two coins dated 1680 and 1736 as well as the side plate of a VOC muzzleloader are also on display. The battle of Muizenberg is also depicted.Opening Hours:Mondays to Fridays:08h00 to 15h30Saturdays: 09h00 to 13h00Sundays: 14h00 to 17h00.No entry fee – free to all.
