A must do if you want to see where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his jail sentence on Robben Island.Robben Island is fairly large and you start with a bus tour with an on board guide giving you information about different buildings and landmarks as you drive around. Youll then head on foot into the maximum security prison. We had a guided tour with an ex convict that gave us a deeper understanding about how the prison system functioned. Youll walk through the administration room, the armoury and various courtyard sections and jail cells with written stories on the walls of the jail cells as well as seeing Mandelas cell. Its insightful and quite the experience to walk where political activists and other prisoners lived and even died during their stay on the island.

They ask for passport then buy ticket. It is nonsense. Also bad organization. Everywhere was lines. We saw only some rooms, and half hour just talk, without any foto, video, or writen information

1. They require passports to enter the ferry.2. Logistic organisation is super poor, we waited our bus for 30 min to one direction, and 40 min back.3. The program is boring, no artifacts, no show, no interaction, just talking about history.4. Groups are owercrouded, abot 60-70 people.

Such arrogant and horrible people. They are super lazy. Because of them couldnt get tickets in time. And had to miss the boat. Really dont know how these people are hired. Even a monkey would have done a better job.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to South Africa. The tours are led by previous prisoners. We were lucky to have Ntando Mbana lead us on our tour. He was a political prisoner who was on the prison at the same time as Nelson Mandela. He was very informative and taught us a lot about forgiveness and reconciliation. He has no bitterness towards this institution that had caused him so much pain. Be sure to take the time to visit the individual cells which have cards explaining who the previous occupier was.Tip: Buy your tickets well in advance as space is limited and give yourself time to make it to the waterfront (especially considering Cape Town traffic).

It was very moving to hear the story directly from an ex-prisoner. Also depressing, of course. Wish it wasnt so crowded so I would have more time to let the impressions sink in.

We took a boat and went there in one hour. We had the chance to be guided by an ex prisonner who explained us everything and specially the details about Mandela. If you go there, there is 2 boats, one is taking 1 hour and the other 30 minutes.

A visit to Robben Island was high on my wish list. The boat trip was a first one - I really enjoyed the wind and waves. The history video was fruitful as preparation. The bus trip and guide was a welcome surprise. The jail visit itself, however, was terrible: I would like letters, reports, perhaps a copy of Nelson Mandelas manuscript LONG WALK TO FREEDOM, taking pictures to see anything. With one of the worlds most visited museums, I expect something more visible. Perhaps someone at Klerksdorps jail museum is going to develop this powerful symbol against apartheid to full potential.

Cape Town must-see! Book in advance, regardless of the season you are visiting!

A wonderful experience. If you visit Cape Town this is a must! Please note: reservation in advance is necessary (approx. 3 weeks in advance). Nb. The weather can change per minute, which can prevent boats from sailing. The visit to the museum consists of two parts: an interactive part where you get a tour of an ex prisoner, who can tell very nice stories and is open to all questions. The second part consists of a (bus) tour of the island where the highlights are shown. It is not allowed to walk around the island independently.Nb. The weather can change during your visit to the island as well, which shortens the tour and quickly takes you back to the mainland. The speed can be quite rough.
