I never thought Id be eating curry in South Africa but this was AMAZING!! The food was well prepared and did not take long to cook. Another thing I found pleasing was how light the food was after being consumed. I didnt feel sluggish at all. Id recommend this place to anyone traveling in the area, or any locals who have not yet given it a try.

Really great food. The famous Dosas are as good as advertised. And the coriander chutney is amazing. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options too if that floats your boat. With the Thali you get to try everything but the chicken curry is the star.

Had been craving a good dosa for a while and Masala Dosa did not disappoint. The dosas themselves were expertly made, curries and accompaniments were well seasoned and made for a delicious and surprisingly filling dinner. Would also recommend the sev puri starter; a great rendition of a popular Indian starter which is somewhat hard to find in Cape Town.

I am eating based on ketogenic lifestyle and thus don’t eat rice or bread. Hence, I asked the the waiter named Riyaz whether he has anything to eat for me. His answer was plain and simple: Just pick something and I’ll come up with a solution. And he did: He prepared a curry dish and instead of rice he cooked up a cauliflower-based rice substitute, which tasted excellent. Hence, 5 stars each for the food as well as the customer friendliness. Highly recommended if you like a unique Indian food experience.

I want to give Masala Dosa a 5 star rating because the food was phenomenal! I honestly thought the entire meal was delicious and I would certainly go back because I found the flavours were complex and delightful. BUT the service was disappointing - during most of our meal the waitress was watching series on full volume on her phone and the music that was playing (there was a dub-step song at one stage) often did not suit the atmosphere. I think with a little more care towards service and music, Masala Dosa has the potential to be a true gem!

We arrived in cape Town with high hopes however left very underwhelmed. For a place named masala dosa one would expect at least the masala dosa to be half decent. Our food arrived an hour later after ordering, cold, and with disturbingly awful plating. This establishment needs to reevaluate its identity

The atmosphere is great - not like all the crazy fancy places in town. Down to earth & lovely. Waiter was incredibly nice and explained how they make all ingredients from scratch. Almost everything is vegan and gluten free, or they have a separate vegan menu. Tea was amazing and the food was out of this world, spices incredible.

We flew into Cape Town at night and went to this restaurant, prior to their closing to pick up food for to go (takeaway). We ordered Masala Dosa and some rice with plain Yogurt. The food was definitely good and tasty, and the service was also good. The reason for 4 star, instead of 5, is because:1. The condiments (Chutney and Sambhar) was too little. A slightly larger serving would be better.2. We asked for Yogurt, but we got them in small cups like Raita. Didnt realized that until we reached home. Would have been better if they had told us.But for this, if someone has any craving for south Indian food at Cape Town, please visit here without hesitation. (May be the issues that I mentioned above may not exist if one dines there itself!).

Aloha... having experienced this delightful boutique restaurant before its takeover and now owned by Riaz Mir, I am heartily enthralled. Hes kept the charm and enhanced the floor table space intelligently. The food is an absolute treat on the palette and senses considering the fact that hes from Kashmir and a gift to Cape Town bringing a greater authenticity of the Indian diaspora with its picturesque plating and all. The aromas intoxicates and the flavours titillates the senses. Masala Dosa is unique and most enjoyable. Highly recommended to indulge oneself and enjoy the colourful flavours.

I was there last night and was served by the owner himself (although I did not know this at the time). He bent over backwards to accommodate my very specific dietary requirements, something I have not seen in many other restaurants in SA before. If you want to eat good Indian food at an establishment that I feel is on par with what you would find in NYC - this is it.

I was there at 12:00 to findout the restaurent is still closed and waited for the door to be open. I had to call in to get someone to open the door after 12:07PM.I felt sorry for the guy who was running around and helping the customers out as he was the only one to attend the customers.I ordered mango lassi which was lassi and had slight flavour of mango but not really cold. But it was good. For starters I had VADA. I am from South India and this vada was no where near what I had it in INDIA. The vada didnt had any ginger flavour in it. It had coriander seeds in it which was over powering. Sambar was ok but coconut chutney was missing a lot of flavours like curry leave, mustard seeds etc... In total starters was just OKAs recommended, I had masala dosa and it was also just ok.I came to this place with lots of expectation but I was disappointed. The food served is fresh and smells a lot of spices but spices need to be in place.I want to give you 5 stars after picking this restaurant but I am sorry man. The guy who serves around the tables is really doing his best to keep table running. 5 stars to that man.Good Luck. I hope in future I will make a turn around and see what changed.

Disclaimer: didnt eat here but walked out when making a food enquiry and being met with a lukewarm response (Im being polite). Theres tons of other Indian options in the city and few that can compete with the quality/taste/price/speed ratio of Eastern Food Bazaar. any shop owner should be highly competitive and inject a little enthusiasm (albeit fake) into their seating and serving experience to differentiate themselves. I was dubious about mostly white people rating this highly and Indians scoring it one star. Thats quite a spread! Unfortunately white folk dont know much about curry so in my 45 years in Durban Ive relied on recommendations from Indians which have been spot on when it comes to good curry and service.By all means give it a shot, but evaluate the clientele at the tables and consider why its not as varied as another curry house.

Sorry Riyaz but really disappointed. I used to eat here all the time when I first lived in Cape Town, 6 years ago. Got a take away lamb dosa yesterday and couldn’t be more dissimilar from the food they used to serve. Not even sure it was lamb. It was minced, not deboned and had some flavour but nothing like what used to be served at Masala Dosa. Also the restaurant itself lack all the wonderful ambiance and vibe it used to have. Plain walls and terrible lighting now. Quite sad is it was one of my old favourites.

I was left alone as other guests were attended to and explained the menu and options available in detail and introducing the cuisine.I understand I did not need any explanation and introduction to the cuisine as I am from India, but atleast a Hello..how are you? would have sufficed from someone who searched for this place and came to eat despite of having other Indian options.1 star only for the non Indian cashier who chose to smile and ask for my order and 1 star for the Masala Chai.Worth a miss the next time Im in Cape Town!

This restaurant does not look like the photos at all. The previously time we ate here the service was good, food delicious. This time the staff seemed almost put out that we came in and they had to vacate the tables they were sitting eating at in order to serve us. The aloo tikki was mushy and flavourless, the lamb curry not as tender as before and portion size minute. The menu is not nearly as varied as before. We will not be back; a real pity as it used to be really good.

Then I ordered mini masala dosa but not satisfied with it , the aloo they gave us is a spoiled one to and only sambar was good , green chutney was bitter with extreme spicy and coconut chutney doesnt taste how it should be. Dinner, December 17. Sadly, things had turned south since Ive been to Masala Dosa some time ago.Hygiene:There were several cockroaches on the floor in the kitchen and toilet area. Someone poured dirty kitchen water into the hand basin, but didnt rinse it. The kitchen walls and working surfaces looked grimy. Our Order:We ordered drinks, starters, and mains. Our drinks arrived, and a while later, our mains arrived; they forgot the starters (!), which we then cancelled. We ordered Chai tea and waited over 20 minutes for it to come; someone had to run to the shop to buy milk. The Food:The Masalad was sent back; it had no roasted nuts and seeds as per the menu, and also came with the wrong salad dressing. It was sent back. When it returned, the nuts and seeds werent roasted. It was sent back again. The vegetable curry and rice was very tasty and of good quality, but we found the portions too small. We ended the meal with Chai tea, which tasted great. Dont know if we will go back again though.Owners response to negative reviews:These are disturbingly arrogant.
