This is a great downtown venue. From the serious-looking bouncer at the door, I presume it can get crowded. I quite like the atmosphere and the staff were quite friendly.Unfortunately, a small poster in the toilets informed me that all the drinks we ordered from the main bar were on a 2 for 1 special at the outside bar because it was 30 minutes into happy hour. Considering the place was virtually empty when we showed up, it would have been a very stylish move if the bartender informed us of that fact, and it would also have gotten the Village Idiot a five star review.

I got there early around 5pm, not busy at all. Cute place for sure. The service I got was great, but again it was early. Tasted some beers before deciding on one. I came there for the biltong plate. I asked if they could add some cheese to it and yes they could. Fantastic....just great! I had to take some back to my room, the waiter know that and gave me a togo box right away. I sat outside which is a smoking area but it was nice. For sure I must go.

Good place for a meal and evening drinks. The Manager was very accommodative of my food allergies. She helped me tweak their dishes so I could eat safely! Sadly didn’t get her name.Jethro was great as our waiter, conversational and made sure he got my order right.Luke was great at the bar with some entertaining information on how to mix drinks.

Wednesdays is bottomless wings and chips.. Delicious...They had a pop up gin stall for R40 where you could choose all the toppings you desired..The prawn curry was filling and tasted amazing.The vibe is quirky and uniqie with a fire place for the winter nights and many funny sayings all of their walls and artwork that will keep your eyes entertained .. A good night out with good food and great venue

INITIAL RATING 3*: Bar staff is friendly and helpful even when its super busy. Wait staff seemed overwhelmed. Food was average for the price. Over-promised and under-delivered a bit. Music was terrible..EDIT: Ive since been back to the Village Idiot and the second time around the service was much better. Our waitron was charming and very helpful. The food was much better than the first visit too. The place is busy and can get rowdy after a certain hour and as patrons become more and more lubricated.Again, if jock-bros and chardonnay poppies are your vibe then this is one for you.

You could easily say its another one of the cool kids spots in Cape Town, but pretty laid back. Situated on Loop Street off Strand Street. They do have burger specials running, def try the coleslaw salad, with its smoked apples, amazing.

We have been suggested about this place by friends that previously lived in Cape Town, obviously we wanted to try to live like locals soooo...from the outside you wont expect nothing special, but inside its amazing, wide, big, warm, cozy, comfortable, with a lot of funny items everywhere. We went here twice, first time for dinner, hamburgers were super good and beers too, yesterday we went back for drinks and we tried different beers and food as well! Staff particularly kind and efficient!

Thomas was really friendly, and kind. We had craft beer which is from local, and finally we could have famous dish, Braai and Bobotea.

Excellent fare, got the deluxe braai board and a dessert and both were amazingly tasty. Coupled with a great local cider, it made for a great early dinner after a couple of long flights in. Planning on coming back here in a couple of nights to try some other local dishes and their spicy ginger beer.

It’s a cool place to drink and eat some local dishes. One of the few places where you can eat after midnight. Loud music can make you dance. Try the wines and finger foods

The food was definitely up to par and was very well priced with decent sized portions. The service was excellent from our waiter Mornez and so was the ambience. Definitely a good choice for a Friday evening

Beautifully interesting bar and restaurant, loved the Burgers and Bobotie the marshmallows next to the fireplace is a great unique touch and dont miss the malva pudding if you have a sweet tooth!

We arrived, the atmosphere was very welcoming and warm and quite hipster in my opinion but I thought it was a lekker spot. Lots of young people having drinks with their friends but creates a lively vibe for sure.Service was absolutely fantastic!Quite surprisingly it was busy for a tuesday evening mid-month.We decided to try their twodays special which consists of 2x pulled pork burgers with coleslaw and a jug of beer for R130 and we decided on a side salad to share but it was smaller than expected.The drinks arrived quickly and food shortly after.The burgers were average, I thought it could have done with more coleslaw, and I liked the salad but he didnt so much.We really enjoyed our first time visiting but will probably only return for drinks as the service and atmosphere is what we enjoyed most.

The vibe is brilliant, service is fast and efficient, building layout is well arranged, food and drinks are significant to the area while be priced in the medium bracket. Overall this is a great place to sit down, have a few drinks and some food with your friends and family. Music isnt overbearing, but is noticeable, thankfully their taste is many years back and suits the age group that flocks to this place. It is a must for not only the tourists but the locals as well.

I haven’t been here since lockdown started - but I’ve been here a few times. It’s got an incredible vibe. I don’t know if it’s the decor, the staff or the clientele that make it great but it just works. Love it here.

Friendly staff and amazing food

The food was okay. The vibe was good, however, the attitude and treatment we received from the waiter was appalling. I had called to make a reservation before my friend and I came to the restaurant. The waiter who served us was rude and very impatient. He took his time before he came to take our order. He would roll his eyes when we asked for more time to look at the menu. When the food arrived, he basically threw the plates on the table. He made us really uncomfortable. I do not want to allude to the fact that this was a racial incident, but it pretty much felt like it. It’s disgusting to say the least, that we as customers should tolerate dealing with mistreatment from a waiter especially when we pay for a service and still paid gratuity of 10% each.

This place has a special place in my ❤️ - beyond the awesome selection of beer and outstanding food, it was the spot where I took my first interview with my current company (in the back staircase connected to the WiFi pretending I was in a conference room...until I got kicked out by the manager and had to go back in next to the drunk dudes yelling profanity at the pool table 😳). It’s a long story how I ended up there for an interview, but it happened.It’s okay... round one was an adventure and four rounds later I GOT THE JOB! I was afraid to leave this review til I officially signed the contract 👏🏼But back to the review... OMG THE CHICKEN WINGS 🐥 I asked for them spicy and they were fantastic.🍻 As far as beer goes, I’m an IPA lover and I was a big fan of the Jack Black IPA.I came a different time and got the curry since I was craving it...not my favorite. The chicken was on the bone so it was a little hard to eat. I’d go for the braii board or some other meat instead of their version of Thai.Really cool interior with fantastic decorations and chill vibe. There’s a fireside to relax by and a pool table in back. Great for dinner with friends or drinks with the crew.Come here! You wont be disappointed 😉

Cool bar on long street. Really nice outdoor are on the first floor that goes around the building. Worth a stop for a few drinks.The food and service was a little slow but it was late on a Friday night so understandable. We had various bits of the braai and seafood which were good, and the bunny chow which was very good and massive!We also didnt quite get what we ordered, but they sorted it out quickly.

Great atmosphere and good selection of music from a wide variety of genres. There is plenty to choose from to eat and the bar is both smart and comprehensively stocked. Entry is free unless there is an event on. Crowds are usually decent and dancing is the name of the game. Stop in a for a drink or grab a table and party the night away via a group of friends. Look out for the ostrich at the bar....

Great selection of beers and drinks. Very cool interior and vibe. Good music and balcony. Tends to be very busy but I you don’t mind waiting a few minutes it’s worth it.

The place is great for social hangouts over a couple of beers and complementary snacking (potato fries, chicken wings etc). They do have meals until late (kitchen normally closes before 10pm). However their food is not too bad and not the best either. They do also have great waiters too.

Very wide and spacious restaurant. Inside and outside seating arrangement aswell as bar seating. At night turns into a club vibe, free entry, good vibes and decent size dance floor. Drinks are quite pricey but place is always buzzing on the weekend and closes around 04:00 in the morning. Havent tried the food as normally only go there for a little dance

Popular social venue, with a great atmosphere and service. Perfect for a fun night out, Tinder date or group social.

To be honest my evening was a complete blur, with brief flashbacks of tequilas and beer. Someone with a flamingos scarf to. We were ushered to the front of the queue as we had booked for that evening and was greeted by a lovely hostess, the evening was a hell of a lot of fun though, music was good and the vibe was great.

Really enjoyed dining out at The Village Idiot - Great food and a wide variety of drinks on offer! The interior is unique and tasteful. Various specials daily - On this particular Saturday, it was half price ribs (2 - 6 pm), which I highly recommended! Half price cocktails available during this time as well! Awesome place to have a birthday celebration or catch a bite and drinks with friends. I would recommend making a table booking on a Saturday to avoid not getting a table upon arrival. I will definitely be back here! 👌

The Village Idiot for me is an odd kinda place. It offers a warm environment which has a bit of personality. We went here for some work drinks, and it was fun and comfortable. The patronage was varied, and it seemed that the clique of Cape Town didnt really apply to this place.It is worth a visit for the decor and vibe.

It was my first time at The village Idiot. We had dinner with friends. The food is amazing as well as the service and best of all they have a Dj on the decks after 10pm. We had a blast.... Loved everything about the place casual and cozy with a fire place for those cold winter evenings. 👍👍👍👍

Super cool ostrich behind the bar. Even though it was a quiet evening, the waiter went out of his way to make it interesting. Nice ambiance with the fireplace and high cafe style tables and chairs. Heard from locals that its the place to be be on the weekend so would probably like to visit again when back in CT.

Great bar! The staff were great, the vibe was great and the drinks well priced. The vegetarian burger was a bit of a miss but otherwise the food looked great.

The decor is absolutely amazing! Love it! Vibe was good. Waiter Matt was friendly and knew the menu well, engaged with his customers :) The menu itself though needs more variety and portions was small on chips and wings but the Mrs Balls Burger was to incredible. Good night all in all! Will recommend it for a good social.

Family outing on a Sat eve for 12 people between ages 17 - 70. Fantastic eve with good food, good drinks, awesome waiters. Great experience. We left at 21:30pm ... before the youngster took over. 😊
