Some of the best ramen bowls I have ever had. The space isnt too big but the food and drink is worth the visit. I love the attempt at creating a Asian street food environment and I like what the restaurant/bar area looks like.
An awesome spot with a super trendy atmosphere, unique and darn tasty food that I couldnt recommend more! Super friendly staff too(no reservation but they still helped us out with a table(make reservations))
I stumbled on this undiscovered gem right in our neighboorhood. Everything was just so yummy. The waitress did an ok job, could have been better. However, the food more than made up for it. This was one of the best mouth-watering burgers Ive had grace my taste buds in a long time. After my meal, I was knocked into a food coma. I would eat here every day if I could afford it!
The Wakame side dish was refreshingly tasty combining the sourness of the pickled seaweed and rice wine vinegar with the sweet sesame oil and sesame seeds and the hint of soy and yakaniku. The Ba Mee fried black rice toned down the saltiness of the double fried pork belly, which was a bit too salty for my taste. My wife ordered the Bird Bao - sticky pulled duck with Fuji apple jam in a teriyaki sauce. Also a bit too salty for her tastesOur waiter was friendly and attentive. We will be back to try their ramen.
Cosy and relaxed atmosphere, with a small but versatile menu. Only seats 8 inside at the bar and a small table outside. The bao, ramen fried chicken and lucky dog are all excellent! Get a bunch of things and share with friends, so you can try as much as possible. Friendly staff, fantastic wine menu and very reasonably priced.
Shocking Service and cheeky Staff.. Not happy with the service, which is a pity, seeing as the food is actually yummy...
Very good food and service
Very good! We ordered the pork belly ramen, duck bao and tokyo fries. All delicious. Great service too. Will definitely be back!
Lucky Bao is part of Cheynes in Hout Bay, in fact its the same kitchen and you can order the same food in both restaurants although the have deferent menus and atmospheres. Lucky Bao being the more informal bar style restaurant. Personally I thought the ramen was far better than the baos... but then Lucky Ramen would not be as cooler name ;)
Good food.
We had been wanting to try this place for 2 months and finally got a gap with a sitter for date night. We arrived and was greeted well and loved the mood and set up. We sat in the outside part of Cheynes and the mood was wonderful. We ordered 2 cocktails, 1 Waygu Burger, 1 Prawn Satay noodle dish and a Pork Belly Bao Bun. Unfortunealty, we were extremely disappointed in the food! The Waygu burger was cooked to death and also had the taste of sourness, the kind when red meat has been sitting out the fridge or in blood for too long, we were even further disappointed with the prawn noodle dish. The prawns were in fact pre cooked, frozen shrimp meat. It was not fresh at all and not the quality of ingredients i would expect from this establishment. We did not even finish the dish. We did really enjoy the pork belly bao bun and the cocktails. My bill was R513.00 and the quality of food did not match this bill. We were so bleek we just paid and ducked, i didnt even want to talk to a manager. It will take a lot of convincing to go back. I have heard good things about this chain of restaurants but my experience was very unsatisfactory.
Fantastic miso ramen!
Amazing Ramen and Baos
Lucky Bao is a real gem. The food is absolutely amazing and the service fantastic. If you are ever in Hout Bay, look them up. You can thank me later.
Thai Corn fritters and the best Bao I’ve ever had, so light.
Small and intimate. Food made in front of you. Very tasty. Great team. Happy friendly atmosphere. Recommend for small groups so you can share the tasty menu
Awesome
Throughly disappointed with my visit, the food took way longer than it should have. I was super excited for my bao bun but it was dry and stale. Will definitely not be going back there.
Food below expextations (we had bao and ramen, both poor taste, the ramen noodles tasted like the cheapest instant). The waiter asked 4 times (!) for the tip (and I am not going to tip poor food and service, sorry not sorry)
Sitting outside in the wind after making a reservation this afternoon ! 40 minutes and still waiting outside ! Walk ins that got in just before us get preference! 2nd time this is happening! Such a pity! Won’t come back and no one else should waste their time!
I would highly recommend ordering takeaways from Lucky Bao because the food is to die for but I would strongly recommend against dining at the restaurant because the service is horrendous.Ive seen mixed reviews online about the service so why do only some people receive good service? This makes me sad.
This place is truly a hidden gem! Unassuming from the outside, you walk in and there are 8 stools around the bar surrounding the small kitchen. All back decor with exposed filament lightbulbs. The menu is diverse and delicious! Asian style tapas, but very generous portions. Amazing, friendly service. I’d suggest trying the pork belly bao.
Cool vibe, amazing food, the staff need training badly though.
The vibe and the food is incredible. There is no words to describe the staff and i am so happy we found this gem . We will be back to this little slice off haven .
I love this place! Best pork ramen ever and the burger is to die for. Authentic and honest food.
Amazing ribs and the burger was fantastic too. We got our food really fast served from the great staff and we ate it even faster because it was really tasty!!
Good food;) but not that very comfortable dinning. Good service
Very disappointing experience. Our takeaway order took very long and the service at the restaurant while we waited was sub par. The bao was good but the ramen was far too salty and there was no chilli or seaweed to add to the flavour. Id suggest Downtown Ramen for a proper, delicious ramen.
Funny to see the gao bao trend also reached SA. We went for the soft shell bao which was nice and two times the “pho” soup, vegan and the 12h beef broth. The vegan version was overly salt which was not good. The pho 12h broth beef description on the menu gave me the impression that it would be a traditional Vietnamese broth, which was definitely not the case. I highly doubt the broth was cooked for 12 hours. Also this one was overly salt and also very greasy, the sirloin was a nice touch though.Bao concept is great, although it’s getting more mainstream globally. Execution, at least for the soups is very poor! Staff is friendly but rather slow.
As I am a huge fan of Cheynes(the chef) other restaurant(Cheynes) I had lofty expectations for this. They smashed them. In the best way possible. Having only recently, as in a year or so, acquired the taste for ramen I can safely say it is the best pork belly ramen I have ever eaten. PLUS they have the same peanut butter milkshake dessert, which is part of the reason I get it off bed every day! The venue is tiny but I think it only adds to the absolute charm of the place. Yum Town.
Stopped for lunch, place was dirty with lots of flies. Ordered pork bao, pork wasnt freshly cooked.. tough and chewy. Spring onion was fiberous and inedible.. bao was stodgy. We were only people there.. prob a better dinner spot.. expensive for what u get.
Great food and atmosphere, waited pretty long for food but worth it
Cosy and small, this place only seats 8 people inside. Seated at the counter your can watch your food being made. Menu makes you greedy to try everything and your will exit full. Ps the veg ramen is divine
Service is slow but food is excellent
Excellent food
Lucky wagyu burger is top class l loved it
Excellent place, great japanese food at a reasonable price!
Intimate restuarant with the most amazing selection of Asian street food. A must
