Hidden gem! The shop is large and loaded with antiques, novelty items and fun things to look at. Highly recommended popping in when passing the store!!
A must see when visiting Stellenbosch! Its a century old trading post, the place looks and feels like you go back in time. Take a few moments to browse the little back rooms that are all connected to form this quirky shop. Theyve got some pretty standard tourist-stuff but if you look closely, you might find a fun and unique souvenir.
Nick nacks and curious. When you have seen one you have seen them all
Very good antiques at a reasonable price....something for everyone. Very friendly staff and a great landmark in this area. Next visit to Stellenbosch will be at least a day as is a great area to explore non franchise shops.
My mother remembered buying bokkoms (salted , dried fish) from Oom Samie se Winkel as a young girl. Recently my parents visited Stellenbosch and I couldnt for the life of me remember where it is. Today I walked past it and decided to go inside. There are old vinyls, home made treats, risque aprons, fresh spices, antique books and a variety of wines. The selection of dusty bottles tally to R1450 for an 1980 red wine. It is situated near good restaurants and art galleries. The outside is distinctive and it piques your interest, inviting you in for a visit to the past.
Quaint little hideaway. Lots to buy. Takes you back in time and history. Wines , gifts , books, novelties, sweets, kitchen supplies. Lots of nooks to see
What a fun shop to nose around in... Something for everyone.
Interesting space, a hodge podge of knick knack history, filled with thousands of objects which can be used or put on display. I purchased the spices and lots of preserves. Friendly staff. Went for lunch at its restaurant Spek en Bone which did not impress. Chicken, chips, salad and waffles with ice cream = menu during Covid period, and expensive, however tasty. Will I go back? Not necessarily.
Lovely store filled with lots of old things
Baie oulik! Was like a trip through past, has something of everything for everyone.
Bit dusty...but suppose its part of the old world charm..
Nice variety
Loads of antique bricabrac Afrikaner heritage stuff plus cool jams etc...
Old and stuffy. Overpriced
Very interesting store. Something for everyone and a reminder of past eras. Definitely worth a visit but set enough time aside to browse.
Crowded yet pleasant. Snoop around to find some hidden treasures and history of the town. Lots of snacks and a few things to get for the family at home while on your well deserved holiday.
A national treasure. You cannot visit Stellenbosch and not stop thwre
A Stellenbosch institution and a must-visit site for any local or international tourist travelling through the region. Lots of interesting trinkets, antiques and locally produced products and foods to buy. Products evoke a sense of nostalgia relating to an archaic countryside that never really existed - a lovely place for the imagination to wonder.
What an amazing experience. This shop still do trading! There are antique items and new items for sale as well as bokoms (dried, salted fish) which obviously gives the shop its distinct smell. So many interesting things to find there.
A gem of old world stuff! A must when in Stellenbosch!
Lost a bit of its authenticity and charm over the years. But one of the postcard stops for any visitor to Stellenbosch. Darryl David
Interesting little shop with something for everybody! We were looking at an sealed item of clothing but couldnt make out the size code. Asked for help from the staff. They werent really interested in helping us as they said that was the last of that line and they wont be getting more. Ended up buying the item too small.
When entering the winkel (store), you will give a giant step back into the past, walking on wooden floors and smell familiar smells, which you cannot really place. This store is a mix of a museum, goods from the good old days here and there a modern addition (wine). Just as you think you saw everything you will stumble upon another corner with surprises. This is a pleasant tourist experience. Allow at least half an hour to one hour to marvel at everything. It is not wheelchair or stroler friendly. If you have small children, you will have to keep an eye on the all the time. Movement in the store is limited, because it is so full of goods. There are street parking outside. Stellenbosch is an active, busy place and it might be best to park in town and walk to Oom Samie.
Completely cute and interesting and I think authentic. About an hour from Cape Town en route to Stellenbosch. Worth a stop.
This eclectic shop is worth the detour. It is an institution in Stellenbosch and one can find some trinkets to take home (everything from food to wine and sea shells). I would recommend going when there arent too many people. The staff is nice.
Love this place went their since I was a little girl. They have amazing antiques and it reminds me of my childhood.Would 100% recommended to other people.
Old world charm. Interesting and fun.
Become a bit commercial i.e. touristy but still worth a visit. Something for everyone in that store
Very cute store where they have a lot of nice gimmicks and stuff.
A place to definitely visit. A wide range of products. The shop has a couple of rooms filled with things to buy. The only con about this place is that the products is very expensive. A place where you only buy with your eyes.
What a nostalgic experience it was to visit this store. They stock wonderful gifts.
Same wonderful as always wonderful. ... fascinating stuff. Brought back my student days. Love anything Stellies.
Great place to buy authentic South African products. From tea to boggoms to curios, they have it all. Great tourist destination as well!
Lasted visited in my youth, very little has changed in the quaint store. The pungent smell of drying fish contrasts with the perfumed smells from the room selling health products and soaps. A must see in Stellenbosch.
Very interesting shop! Loads to see and admire
Love this place. Jam packed with collectables, books, herbs and many other quirky things. Good prices
Great to visit.
Very interesting shop! A tad overpriced, but I do love the eclectic mix of items on display and for sale
Wonderfull store steeped in tradition...worth a visit
Very interesting things to see. Nice to spend time looking at different things.
Lots of funOld trade store. Need time to explore this treasure trove.
Really great at taking you back in time. Some interesting buys if your looking for something old. But really overpriced.
This is the weirdest store ever. When you walk in it is so stinky there are dead fish near the register on the wall I suspect that is making a big contribution to the smell I wouldnt recommend it to anyone.
Lots of interesting items to look at. You can get a wide variety of tea leaves there.
Loads of interesting curiosities to browse. Just the smell of the bokoms was a bit much. Still very much worth a visit.
Interesting if you’re a tourist but a bit boring for the average South African. They have some very old wines which are interesting to look at.
Very interesting historic site, worth a visit, close to lots of nice restaurants and bars
Sour staff. Shop seriously dirty..
A wide variety of stuff to buy. From kaggelkakkies to spices, bokkoms, wines and great South African souvenirs for tourists visiting Stellenbosch.
Cool little store, but a bit pricey.
A step back in time - well worth a visit
Nice mixture of old and new. Very much a tourist gift Shoppe with relevant pricing.
Old world Charm. But the sales people a bit to eager
A shop that has so much but doesnt really have anything you need. But well worth the visit, maybe you might just find something you like.
Cool to visit if you are a tourist. Not for locals
Smelly and dusty. Maybe if you like really old things...
Classic shop, a real family tradition to stop here when visiting Stellenbosch
Authentic. Lots to see and buy at touristic prices. Not much else to see or do in Dorpsstraat in Stellenbosch. So, quick stop and onto the vineyards :-)
Pity the staff are so unfriendly and keep staring at people as if they are trying to shoplift. Also it’s way overpriced. Get better prices at Mooiberge or Zerlers roadside stalls.
Great small shop, the paths are narrow, but once you are inside the store is way bigger than it looks on the outside. Feels like you are going back in time to be inside.
Such a nice place to visit when you go to Stellenbosch.😁
Great stock, but expected more typical Stellenbosch items
Nice place to buy gifts, otherwise filled with random things.
Lived here for almost a year now and I still havent been in to Oom Samie. I should rectify that so I can give an actual review. Looks very cluttered from the outside though which is why I havent been in.
The old look and strong smell of bokoms when you walk in the door really adds an atmosphere of what this place is all about. A reminder of the sort of operation of an early 1600s dutch coopmanshuis or english trader and keeping alive the traditions that built the town. Lots of cool old stuff and very interesting antiques. Definatley worth a visit if youre in the area
A Wonderful trip down memory lane ❤
Very good service by helpfull, friendly and client oriented staff. Great product selection.
Great to see with many things to buy
Best little shop to snuffel in! Lots of old stuff and many new! A historical must-see when youre in Stellenbosch.
Visiting Stellenbosch. Oom Samie Se Winkel should be on your list of places to visit.
Wonderful. A real piece of history. Will visit again.
Love the restaurant in the back courtyard, away from the crowds with only a few tables. Delicious Cape food.
Very interesting shop. There are a variety of different items up for sale.
100 year old shop... Couple of unique gift ideas you wont see any where else..
Nice shop, great variety of items. Unfortunately they clearly cater to the foreign market.
I love this place! It feels like youre walking into the 1800s when you enter the shop.
A shop that takes you back to a time befor malls. Get some bokkems (dried fish) and freshly baked bread.
Lovely shop....also selling the Photo art blocks of Lynne Nadauld
Great tourist attraction with a wide variety of interesting gifts
Seldom visited. Always interesting to see so much old stuff in such a small place.
Step into a time-machine and experience a unique blast from the past. A must-see for any tourist in Stellenbosch.
This is a place in Stellenbosch everyone should visit
Definitely a must see if you are in stellenbosch, a great place to get some unique trinkets.
What an interesting, beautiful old store!
Nice to look but too expesive.
Oom Samie Se Winkel is one of the oldest shops in Stellenbosch and has a wonderful collection of old souvenirs.
Very nice antique shop
Always great to go in there for the paat 30 years. Friendly kind service
Just special with all kinds of curiosities. Relive early days.
It smells so bad from all the bokoms
