Quite simply the best cocktail bar in Jozi. I love an old fashioned and they just absolutely crush it.The food is new since I was last there and it’s genuinely amazing. Street food is the theme of the menu (burgers, burritos & taco’s)The place is incredibly well run and has proper owner involvement behind the bar and in general service. I highly recommend sitting at the bar to learn a bit from Julian he’s a true artist. The outside section is also new and just has a great chilled vibe about it.If you haven’t been you have to. It’s just the best little night out.

Its not often that I have the opportunity to be surprised particularly when it comes to alcohol, however, Sin Tax did just that. A very clever play on a prohibition era speakeasy. There are no signs announcing your arrival. You could be forgiven for thinking youre lost. A doorman goes through the secret door and prepares a place for you. Thereafter, he comes out and ushers you into a lovely modern bar, with exposed brick and leather chairs. Seating is available at the bar and on tables. The lighting is pared back to provide the right ambience. The bar is well stocked and three drinks menus are available. Free savoury popcorn is provided. Must try drinks are the signature cocktails which are worth every cent. Mixologist Julian and his team are knowledgeable, very friendly and consummate professionals. The cocktail production is true art and one can clearly see the passion that goes into the production of the fine cocktails that use natural and freshly prepared ingredients. I have found my slice of heaven in Johannesburg.

Feels like a hidden funky bar in Manhattan. Liked that it’s not over crowded. The pizzas from Coalition compliment the ever changing drinks. Their themed drinks are consistently good so get brave and try it. These bartenders know how to create a drink!

Was such a nice vibe here. Went for my sisters birthday. I love that they ask you what you sort of like to drink and then bring a dri k according to that. Really made me feel as though we were at a speak easy, loved it.

With a drink menu that is always changing, not because they are bad, but because of all the creativity and inspiration from Julians life, you will never be disappointed in a visit there!

This reminds of me a ‘secret’ but popular bar in New York called Raines law room. The flavors in their drinks are amazing. The range of cocktails they have are really great and suitable to anyone’s pallet. They do also assist you in choosing a good cocktail if you are lost in all the choices.The location is exactly what you want and expect it to be- a secret. Sort of ‘difficult’ to find, in an alley, but that’s makes the place all the more better. I hope they stay true to themselves and keep it authentic and do not fall into becoming too commercial.Had to post a picture, but would have really liked to keep everything about them as secret as possible for you to go and find out more!

This place has an hidden entrance which makes it more appealing. The place is clean and staff is extremely friendly. The cocktails are mesmerising and amazing. Highly recommended. We tried all the cocktails and paw paw chill and not so necessary were the stand out ones for us. The place gets really full so its recommended to call them half an earlier before coming. It had a seperate smoking zone although the place is pretty small. Please note though that they have limited food options.

The drink were these fantastical creations with amazingly weird flavour combinations. The atmosphere was the old school speakeasy vibe. It was intimate and other worldly like stepping back in time. Drinks that are hot on the top and cold at the bottom and best believe they pour heavy, a couple of drink will make you down right friendly. Unparalleled experience.

Really good cocktails, the seasonal menu really shines

We were admitingly a tad but apprehensive when we took the corner on Bolton and walked a couple of meters down the alley in through a side door. But from then BAMM...we were greated by a bubbly hostess/waitress and were promptly offered a front row seat to the magic show.Massive shout out to Shadrack and Calvin who not only provided us with fantastic service, but also jsit cause they are really authentic, and lekker gents! The drinks were divine...and the watching Shadrack create them...even better! We cant wait to try out the new space. Thanks team, it was certainly a night that we will remember. Will hopefully be seeing you all soon. Ps. Hope you guys still have that amazing popcorn. 😉

The place was somewhat small. They promised that it was jazz night; I expected a Band but they just had a DJ. We didn’t even stay. It also was as ethnically diverse as I would have liked.

Sin Tax is probably the best place in Joburg for a night out. The atmosphere is incredible, the service is unmatched and the drinks are absolutely divine. It may be a bit pricey but the experience is worth every penny!WHY WOULD YOU EVEN CONSIDER GOING ANYWHERE ELSE!?

Very cool hideaway with any cocktail you can think of plus their unique specials. All the staff and especially the owner were incredibly nice and seemed genuinely interested in having chats with their customers. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

The best speak easy/cocktail bar in JHB, absolutely love this place and how hidden it is from the mainstream.The staff are awesome and attentive and the drinks are exceptional.Its a bit of a set back that there is such a limited menu for food but overall the venue, ambiance and drinks make this a very small factor to my personal experience.Seriously do yourself a favour and visit here, it really is a perfect place to just sit back and wind down, an honest experience for lovers of the old school and classic class of the traditional speak easy.

This has to be the best cocktail bar in Joburg. It is a speak easy with a relaxed atmosphere. What ever the occasion whether you are going for a drink after work or going on a night on the town it is the perfect place. They create craft cocktails and work on a molecular level. The bartenders are some of the best in the country. I cant wait for my next visit.

They specialise in very creative cocktails, all of which are amazing, although you can get craft beer if you want it. They offer great pizza too, if youre feeling peckish. Its a little on the pricey side, but certainly worth it for an experience that you cant get elsewhere. In my top five Joburg night spots.

What an experience! Right from the moment you meet the doorman in the alley and feel like youre entering a secret place. You can just sit at the bar for hours and be entertained by the skills of the mixologists. My favourite part of our visit was explaining to them my favourite flavours and having them whip up something personalised for me. The pizza was also really good. Not a cheap outing, but so worth it. The flavours and attention to detail are incredible.
