I did the yellow trail 10.5km, very easy for someone who is a regular hiker.It’s in the middle of the city,so it’s not absolutely tranquil. There is animals on the trail I managed to zebras 🦓Scenery not that good, it doesn’t give that “I am lost in nature kind of feeling. You will hear cars driving by.I would recommend the braai areas for family picnics, great play area for kids

Went for a refreshing 10km morning hike on a cold winter morning and absolutely loved it. We slacked about it and it took us 5 hours. Met a couple of people on the trail, but only got crowded on the shorter route.Theres a childrens play park and horse stables near the parking spots, which is convenient for me who has a small child who may not want to go on a long hike.There are three trails, white, red, and yellow. The 10km yellow joins either the red or white after 7km. We took the red trail, which has all the way to the R21 by Monument park but lost the route around the Hippo pool and ended up on the cycle route, which is where we saw the two ostrich.Clearly marked.Moderate difficulty.

Awesome place. Did the 4x4 trail as a novice with a stock standard Jeep Grand Cherokee. Enjoyed the whole park. People there are friendly. Saw some wildlife as well.

Great place for horseback and foot trailing they have a lovely play ground for kids, hiking trail and 4x4 trail. The nature reserve has beautiful scenery, and the animals roam freely without minding people.

The environment is very refreshing and therapeutic. The 10km hiking experience was very intense yet fun.😄The walking route was a bit confusing, we got lost a few times but ended up finding our way back. Overall the place is very amazing it just needs to maintain and improve the picnic area.

Its a moderate rocky trail with scenic beautiful view and animals on site

This is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa. Nice and easy 4X4 drive. Nice views of Pretoria and surrounding. Lots of zebras and other animals. Quite a few points of interest. Best to go early in the morning as it gets hot. Take lots of water. Drive is about 14km and takes over 2 hours.

Great place to visit in Pretoria due to its family friendliness at a low price.The nature reserve offers a number of activities such as Horse riding, hiking, a 4×4, trail as well as braai and picnic facilities. All this while in the background wild animals such as Zebra and Giraffe roam around.Definitely a must visit for the whole family.

What a beautiful and peaceful place!A great place for children and adults alike.However, I was very worried about the state of the jungle gyms - one of the kids fell off an unstable slide and broke his wrist. There are screws protruding from the wood. The other slide is cracked. Some of the wooden bars are loose. The orange drum has rusted, sharp edges. ☹ Photos attached.

Moderate hiking routes, have different options to choose from. There was staff visibility, who were very helpful, and clear markings.The views and surroundings are really beautiful, and there are animals too! We came across zebras and buffalos (bison), there were also so many interesting and colourful bugs.There is one place where a body of water stands between you and completing your route (after heavy rains); if you do not want to cross, then follow the animal trails (if visible) and go around. A mini detour, but doable.I really enjoyed this one, will do it many more times again. Also easy on the pocket, especially for what you get!

Great location as its just adjacent to Fountains Valley so you can do both places if you have enough time. The reserve is quite large and the hiking trails offer enough optical coverage in terms of exploring. Sadly the taps along the trails are put of service however there are enough spots for picnicking and braaing. Just no music allowed. Overall its a great place to spend a day at with either family or a group of friends :)

Absolutely great hiking in the city. There are 3 routes to choose from. We did the longest of them 10.5km. Nice technical portion at beginning and end that is Rocky but nice. Wear the right shoes. Came up close and personal with some girraf and zebra to😊

As a Groenkloof resident it’s very sad to see the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa slowly failing. I so desperately want to give it 5 stars. I love this place and am very concerned about it’s future. I did the 4x4 route solo and for the first time un 23 years visiting Groenkloof Nature Reserve I did not feel safe. On two occasions loiterers that obviously did not belong in the reserve were encountered. One lot were strategically positioned at a rather difficult obstacle. I would almost guarantee a mugging if you had to get stuck. So easy to fall in a trap.Please invite drone operators to assist with security. An easy, cost effective solution. I will not be back in on my own until the security situation is not addressed and well publicised.Judging by the response of the administration it is no wonder the reserve is in such a crisis. Clear message: please don’t come to the Reserve. We don’t need you.

Very busy trail walking site. Shorter route markings need attention. Construction work at entrance creares a bad impression. The longer trail route is quite technical but well worth it. Highway noise is very loud....this is like a city trail walk.

Lovely place for family picnic and braai. Relaxing environment with options for hiking. Fee payable on entry but not expensive.

There are nice picnic and braai areas. They charge a reasonable entrance fee. They have various hiking trails, which are lovely. However, we took the 10,5 km hiking trail which is quite strenuous and there is no water taps or resting areas on the trail, so make sure to take lots of water. Also make sure to put on sun screen as there is very little shade. Overall it is a good place for an outing and wed definitely be visiting again.

We had a wonderful and relaxing time when we visited the nature reserve. They have a lovely, clean play ground for kids, hiking trail and 4x4 trail.If you love hiking, you can check out their hiking trail.

Great hiking spot with braai areas for those rest sessions with friends and very safe place for hiking really like the postman at every 2km mark

A very good hiking trail. There are clean ablution facilities, a little cafe for a cup of coffee, picnic spots with nice trees and shade, horses for rides and a few ostriches roaming the area... All that before you start the hiking trails which has an entrance fee of R50! There are a few trails so refer to the map given at the gate. The paths are not so clearly marked so pay attention because the trails differ in length. There are also free roaming Zebra and ostriches on the walkways.There are sections where its very uphill and can get quite strenuous which is nice depending on your fitness level- wear extra sun protection as there is not much shade along trails.

Wanted to book the lovely lapa for a function to support them, however no one has a clue as to what is going on, we were there in person and they dont even know they advertise their lapa for venues. No one can even care less to help you. Very disappointed. They also asked us for cash? Very unprofessional.

My husband and I went for a hike a few weeks ago and it was really fun. We got lost a few times, but used it as an opportunity to explore the place even more. Will definitely be going back soon, hopefully my friends can tag along too.

Ive been here twice so far. Its great experience. Got to walk beside the Zebras and well the springboks ran from us.One thing that they need is clear marking of how to get on each trail coz Ive ended on the 10.5km trail and that was hell of lot.But the trails are challenging and just as good.

I throughly enjoyed myself here. Mostly because we got to see Zebras at a very close range and walked between them. That was an exciting experience. The trail itself tends to be too rocky and a lot of climbing on the last 3 kilometres. The trail direction signs need to be repainted as some are almost completely washed off. There are some beautiful, peaceful open views where the fresh clean air brushes you as you walk and stop a bit to take it all in. We also saw wildebeest and an Ostrich family complete with parents and babies. It was actually the first time I saw baby Ostriches ever! We walked behind them for about 500 metres because they insisted on using the pathway and we did not want to get too close to be a possible threat to a mother of small chicks. We all know that is when animals are most dangerous or defensive. We definitely cant outrun an ostrich and Ostriches are known to kick. So that was scary but also exciting adding to the colourful experience we had. Also note that the map shoes resting places and we expected to find a table and benches under trees but there is no sign of any area being designated for resting. Therefore we believe that the map is just suggesting those places to you. You will decide whether you stand and drink water, take pictures or sit on the ground. We personally did not make any resting stops.We will definitely be coming back to Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

Had a fantastic day out at Groenkloof. Very friendly staff getting a multitude of visitors in under current difficult conditions. Almost all visitors were there to enjoy a hike. The venue is clean and properly maintained . The trails were clearly marked and very clean. No papers or any litter spotted along two trails that is used by an increasing number of people during lockdown. A place that can be safely used by people looking to escape to the outdoors.

My first time at the reserve. I saw beautiful Zebras on the short 5KM trail. The view was amazing, the air clean and refreshing

Excellent hiking trails, not very busy. The cave is an epic experience to explore. Remember a flash ligh though.

I usually do the MTB trails here which are great. However, hiking for the first time was really good fun. Check your trails before starting out. Something for everyone.

Had a great time,the sun was very hot decided to go for a swim,the pools are clean and there are lifeguards making sure we are safe and they charging a reasonable entrance fee, I will definitely visit again

Had an awesome hiking experience with my friends. We did a 10km hike from 8am-1pm, we were resting along the way to see wildlife and have snack. I like that theres a braai area and picnic spot. Ill definitely go to Groenkloof again and for horse riding this time

Lovely nature reserve with a lot of trees and herbs, variety of bird species and a lots of wildlife.Great and safe place for day walks, bike rides and jog on the trails.Beautiful scenery and decently laid out trails.We did the white and red trails, saw giraffes, zebras, ostriches and blue wildebeests.Seeing the giraffes and zebras was one of the best experiences for me personally.Definitely worth a visit.

Loved it. Gives you time to get to know your friends well.You just need to book for certain parts of it, I guess thats the one downfall. Overall, great place to have fun in the sun.

Pros:- sufficient parking- entrance fee not too high- the trail is quite clean and nicely marked- some animals can be seen like zebras ostrich and giraffes.- even when very crowed as now after the lockdown it still doesnt feel too busyCons:- entrance is poorly organised. Just one cashier for walk in and cars. You wai up to 45 minutes to enter- nearly no shadow along the entire 10.5km trail- biggest issue: as the park is next to busy roads around 70% of the 10.5km trail the main thing you hear are cars

Did the 10.5km hike on a Saturday. Very very busy trail. Best if if start early as the open.Was very annoyed by people who brought loud bluetooth speakers. No regard for other hikers or wildlife at all.Wildlife alobg the trail if lucky.Level: easy

Live it, good place to hike and enjoy seeing wild herbivores animals. Your mind and body will feel relaxed

The reserve is beautiful and clean and a visit to the cave is a must! They have many animals and walking through the bush with them is a magical experience. The music from the neighbouring resort was very loud though and marred the experience somewhat and the hiking trails need better marking in some places.

This place is amazing. So much for the family to do. Mountain bike riding, horse riding, hiking etc. I did the 10.5km hike and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Would definitely recommend it and would visit again.

A relaxing bush experience within the city!

Did the 10.6km hiking trail. It is very beautiful. Entrance is super affordable at 43.00 for an adult. 22.00 for a pensioner and 25.00 for a child. The trail is well marked in most parts. You get beautiful views of the Pretoria City. The guards at the gate were very helpful to me. Its not often that you get such good service. There are animals on the trail I saw Zebra, Springbok and other buck. Apparently there are giraffes as well but I did not see any. Its hike is steep in the first kilometer and the last 2km. Otherwise u wont suffer

We couldnt get in because they only allowed 100 cars at a time. There was no notice to that effect and we had a queue of about 12 cars before they thought to convey the message to everyone who was waiting to get in.

The hiking trails are challenging but still so much fun to be on. Cant wait to go back for horse riding 😁

A nature reserve with diverse trails, ranging from hiking, biking and off roading. The terrain is quite diverse varied. Theres a rich flora and fauna with a chance of bumping up into wildlife. Depending on the time and trail taken one is likely to see them. The place is well kept, strict guidelines on environmental preservation and littering ensure minimal destruction to this ecosystem. There are dedicated picnic areas with braai facilities and lots theres lots of parking.

The views are amazing from the mountain top. You can take your partner to one of the view points and enjoy an amazing sunset and believe me, its extremely romantic. The place is quiet, clean and well maintained. I also like the fact that this place has been secluded and set aside as a nature reserve which people can still enjoy. Keep up the good work.

Technical 10k trail is the best of urban hiking or running. Plus, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, kudus, springboks, and foxes. The earlier you go the more you see. Highly recommend Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

A break with nature with no traffic at all. On top of the mountain to get another view of Pretoria. Most beautiful during the day and night. If you need to take a break from the Busy City you need to get to this place.

Enjoyed our day with friends, riding horses. It was a nice experience and the staff was friendly with a guider. A good place to hike and chill, wish I could spot more wildlife

The Giraffes are back and beautiful scenery...

Such a relaxing nature reserve for all who love to walk. Seeing giraffes, zebras and antelope on our walk was the highlight. The red route took just over two hours at steady pace. There are options to mountain bike or drive around but I would recommend walking. If walking, come prepared with water and suitable walking shoes as some paths are rocky.

Groenkloof Nature Reserve has hiking and mountain bike trails. Horse riding and some 4x4 fun seems to be doable. Close to Centurion / Pretoria. Ideal if you want to get into Nature for a quick reboot. They also have picknic phasilities and space where the kids can play. It has all you need for a good day out in nature with some of your favorite people. Enjoy!

A wonderful place for a peaceful hike, you would never know you were so close to the city, except for the annoyance of vehicle sounds from the nearby highway on some parts of the trail. Plenty of animals live in the area, going by how often you come across dung on the trails. Watch your step. I saw giraffe, zebra and some buck along the way.At the beginning/end if the trail there are restrooms as well as a picnic and play area.

One of the exciting nature reserves in Johannesburg. You are guaranteed to spot game whenever you visit. I always look forward to spotting different animals. I also enjoy their hiking trails, they are clearly marked.

The trail is well marked and clean. The downside is that there is a lot of noise around because of the surrounding busy road and built up area 😢

The National Heritage Monument at Groenkloof is literally a hidden gem, Cant believe so few people know about it. Its a must visit if youre in Pretoria. A collection of almost 100 life size bronzes telling the story of South Africas Long March To Freedom. Theres usually a guide on site to interpret the story of South Afirca.

For those who are new to hiking this is a great place to start. The route is mostly flat and the Zebras around make the view all worthwhile.

Lovely 10km hike and never being this close to a giraffe. Seen Zebra, Blue Wilde beest and Ostriches. Hiking trails are clearly marked. Some parts are a little more challenging. On a hot day, pick an early start. Amazing Views of the Voortrekker Monument.

Beautiful place, we saw lots of animals. Its very quiet and a great place to spend the day for a family outing or a group of friends. Theres also this cool guy who sells really great coffee and lots of nice beverages (hot and cold) we had a really good time.

While they are busy renovating the entrance gate it is a bit chaotic to enter, and they only accept cash. But once inside, the trails are very clean, well maintained and clearly marked. Worth a visit.

This is a Challenging hike, and also ideal for cross country running training. Novice hikers will be be able to do the the hike but should take it slowly, as it starts and end with steep climbing.The views of Pretoria are beautiful once you’re on top, and ic you are lucky, you kight spot some game along the way

Nice simple hikes. Make sure to bring sunscreen as their isnt a lot of shade on certain paths

We had a lovely experience at the reserve. We started on a wrong trail bur eventually got it right. Great security and an awesome experience altogether. The only negative was the security we asked for directions who wasnt really keen on assisting (hence starting on the wrong trail). Definitely something to enjoy.
