Worthwhile visiting. Nice for photoshoots. (Without flash)
This is a spacious, multilevel volume art gallery and possibly the largest and most modern of its kind in the capital city of Pretoria. Safe parking is accessible from Lynnwood road, and the Art Centre is adjacent to additional surrounding space for open air music concerts and an area where food can be served. A connecting passage forms a decorative bridge across Lynnwood road, the most visible part for commuters traveling along that busy road. This means the complex is also linked to and accessible from the opposite side of the road, where the main campus of the University of Pretoria is situated. Students have free access, though the public needs to pay an entrance fee. Memberships to some arts associations offer free or discounted entry rates.
Excellent uncluttered open spaces on many levels that let the art completely come to its own: taking its own space and let you breathe each and every display. And the Gold room..wow.Overall, so many thought-provoking pieces that ended up stirring deep emotions.Well done. Worth a visit, you will go again. I cant wait.
I may have built it up in my head, and of course the press around it was robust, but it is otherwise a rich location. Pretoria needed another major art institution that was not pretoria art museum. The Javett collection represents an interesting perspective on south African art history. Hopefully there will be much opportunity to have critical discussion here. There is a very quaint gift store, but no coffee shop as yet. There is an entrance fee which does make things a bit exclusionary, but at least student tours can be booked at no cost to the students.
Lovely show by Willem Boshoff. The African Gold exhibition is also extremely cool. Half of the space was closed but it was still worth it. Love the parking garage graffiti. It was also empty so me and my friend were the only ones there, it was so cool to have a whole museum to ourselves.
Its a fun cool space to be at if you love art. The exhibitions change every certain couple of months and the atmosphere is often quiet. You are allowed to take pictures and tours are available to take you around the space. Plus entry is free for students with student cards.
The Javett Art Centre, located at the University of Pretoria, is an exceptional new attraction, showcasing the art heritage of South Africa and the continent of Africa. The museum bills itself as dedicated to the Art of Africa.Art centre is really a misnomer - this attraction is a large and impressive art museum or gallery. It houses a range of exceptional art of Africa, from Irma Sterns Arab Priest to Alexis Prellers Discovery. But the most impressive exhibit of all is the Mapungubwe Collection, with its centrepiece, a tiny, but perfectly fashioned gold rhino. The Mapungubwe Collection dates from AD 1000 – AD 1300, and was discovered by archaeologists in the what is now the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, in the north-east of South Africa. The Mapungubwe Kingdom boasted master goldsmiths; the rhino, and a range of other gold pieces including necklaces and other small figurines, are testament to their craftsmanship. The museum is large and spacious, with three floors of exceptional art, all laid out expertly, in a way to entice the viewer in. Opened on 24 September 2019, it must already rate as one of South Africas top attractions.
Really worth the visit. Willem Boshoffs exhibition is awesome and so thought provoking. Gallery staff extremely engaging and helpful .... beautiful gallery
Great place to view classic South African art, international and contemporary art.
The Javett Art Centre. First time I visit the place. This place has a million stories (various interpretations) in each art work, the place is really beautiful, free for students (with valid student cards) and R150 for non students😅(totally worth it though. The reception people and security staff are so friendly and helpful. They recommend a visit during public holidays when there are facilitators who help explaining the interpretation of art work from the artists perspective. There is so much room to move around (convenient since its Covid times) and you are allowed to take pictures, provided you dont use your flash light or touch the work
A great art gallery to visit. Nice exhibition.Next exhibition will start from February. Not a great sign on the main road and following maps app u may get confused!Gallery has a few floors and many sections and one may get confused. But I am sure second visit will be much easier.Am not sure if it’s enough wheelchair friendly! And some of items don’t have a label of information!Schools get some art workshops in different halls of the gallery that is so encouraging for kids. So take your children and let them get inspired.Very friendly staff.
If u love art....dats a place to be lot of good art works....de place is so beautiful and its very interesting
An experience to remember! Insightful and enlightening works of art that inspire and challenge our conceptions of the world.
The Gold from Africa and Mapungubwe collection were worth this trip.
An unexpected surprise - this gallery is of an international standard. Light, beautiful spacial design, great variety of art yet keeping to a coherent narrative. I loved it!
Beautiful and interesting art. I was very impressed with this gallery.
Although there werent a lot of art pieces because they were making space for new art pieces that must come in for the new exhibition, It was a great experience.
Shortage of labelling and other explanatory text
Just amazing!
The architecture is breathtaking. It blends well with the Surrounding environment. It is a genius piece of work. Fits so well with its Surrounds that it seems to have been here for ages albeit it looks brand new.
Thank you for q great tour through SA history
Im not much of artist but i really enjoyed this visit. The Mapungubwe Gold Reserve is definitely the show stopper. The facility is easily accessible, LOTS of parking. Its in a very central location. Theres plenty to do in the area as well so book a full day when you go.
Loved it. Very modern, great guide. Will definitely return as they want to change the exhibition every 6 months. Next one due in March 2020
A truly remarkable collection of contemporary South African art. It was a feast for the eyes and the soul. This is exactly what Pretoria needed. My only suggestion is that they reconsider costs to make it a little more affordable for the public. A must for art lovers and art students
Beautiful new gallery in Pretoria near the University of Pretoria. Make sure to visit it and allow enough time or plan to come more than once. Pensioner discount.
Worldclass art museum and gallery. Showcases the best South Africa has to offer, multiple art styles. Wonderful experience!
Well lit, spacious art gallery. Grand entrance and foyer space. A must see for art lovers and architects alike
New talent given an opportunity to showcase their work. Now this is progressive thinking.
Fantastic Museum of modern and contemporary art. Forget all the other and visit this one, allowing enough time.
An extraordinary expierence. A century of South African art in a modern gallery.
Excellent centre, just the tour was incredibly rushed. They should either extend the tour time or focus on fewer artworks so that we have time to actually stand and take them in
Fantastic place. Highly educational about the South African arts scene.
State of the art gallery. A LOT of art on display. Must see!
A really smart looking art gallery with amazing pieces for everyone to look at. I would visit again.
A beautifully designed and constructed art centre that holds some of the greatest and most influential art in South African history, along with the legendary Mapangubwe Gold collection. A place all should visit!
My wife is studying Visual communication, and it was great to see in real life, the art in her curriculum.
