Swanage is a wonderful experience I would recommend to everyone. It is like advertised: a family away from home. From family dinners to fatherly advice, everything is provided. Alan is a wonderful person (the world would need more Alans) who has always an open ear for his students and is always eager to make everybodies experience perfect. He even has an air fryer in his kitchen. Therefore if there are any air fryer enthusiasts out there, this is the place...😉

Dr. Alan Peter is a very welcoming person, always happy to help, a man with a big heart for his Swans. The best place to stay for an elective in Joburg!

I stayed at Swanage throughout Dec/Jan 2020 and I had such a wonderful time. Highly recommend. Alan and Jonathon truly made Johannesburg a second home to me. The accommodation is perfect, plus it is located at one of the safest suburb in Johannesburg. I will certainly be making another visit if Im around!

A warm and inviting home for students from around the world, located in a peaceful, safe and convenient neighbour. Also a great way to get involved in the Baragwanath family and learn about South Africas rich history! Could not recommend Swanage more!

Theres nothing like being part of the Swanage family. From family dinners to the most amazing safari glamping with Alan (whos also a park ranger and has a bottomless wealth of knowledge), there is really no better place to stay in Johannesburg. The rooms are clean and Alan really goes above and beyond to provide for Swanage. Although it may be slightly further from Baragwanath than other options, the surrounding area is one of the safest suburbs in Johannesburg, and its one straight drive on the highway to hospital.Swanage is not just an accommodation, its an experience, and its a family. Already thinking about when Ill be back!

Visited Swanage as an elective student from the UK. Alan and the team at Swanage honestly take such incredible care of you, making sure that you dont just spend your time at the hospital. Hes a game ranger at Pilanesburg National Park and took us on an incredible safari there. As well as this the people I met at Swanage were just incredible and we honestly did become a little family.Thank you Swanage, cant wait to come back!

What can we say. We had such a great time at Swanage and were welcomed with open arms which made us feel at home right away. Whenever you wanna know something about work at the hospital, about Joburg or South Africa, need travel tips or just want to have a good conversation or discussion Alan and Jonno are always up to it. So a huge thank you to you and the other Internationals for making our time in Joburg so memorable and interesting. Hope to see you again some day :)

I spent 4 weeks with Alan while on elective in Joburg. He made us all feel very welcome, and there is a great sense of community there. I wasnt able to make it to one of his safaris due to timing and lack of availability on my part, but people who went said it was excellent, and the value was second to none.Cheers Alan, hopefully see you around!

I wanted to take my time to talk about my experience of staying with this wonderful man- Dr Alan Peter, a priest, physician and most importantly a wonderful human being. I was whole heartedly welcomed in his house on the first day, he treated us with halal meat on a Sunday lunch and made me & my husband so much as home. He is like a family member, god father who guided us through out on how to be safe and enjoy our experience in Johannesburg. Most importantly he guided me on how to make the most of the safaris in Botswana- most memorable experience of my life. His binoculars to sight animals and rains coats for Victoria falls so we dont get wet, made me admire him a lot more for looking out for us so much during our holiday. You will not regret your decision of staying in his place which is equipped to host medical students and his guidance just makes your living in Johannesburg far more easier. You should have a car in Jo berg just because its a lot more easier and safer for a foreign student. Bara is 25 min drive away and I throughly enjoyed my morning drives. I cant wait to be back to join him on his 14 days safari, addicted to safaris- incase you cant tell already. I give him 7 stars for his hospitality and willingness to help medical students and guide them. He would go extra length to help you, and believe me you definitely wont ever forget your experience of elective in Bara- fantastic place to learn.

Swanage is THE PLACE to stay if you’re a doctor/medical elective student. Forget about the other options. Swanage gives you the opportunity to focus on your work but to also have fun - the mix of people is great, the atmosphere very friendly and familial and the facilities good. It is also very safe. While some may be offset by the distance to Baragwanath hospital, it’s absolutely fine, doesn’t take too long but at least you live in the nice and safe north-western part of Johannesburg. One of the highlights of living in Swanage is that Alan, a consultant at Baragwanath Hospital himself, is also a game ranger who tries his very best to take every visitor to Swanage on Safari, which is a great experience and also of great value.

Summarizing the amazing experience in Swanage so as not to make you tired: The home is in a safe suburb and has all the useful amenities you could wish for: nice rooms, spacious living room and terrace, lovely pool, garden, dishwasher, laundry, BBQ, piano, ample space for cars, ping pong area, supermarket and pharmacy in walking distance. The drive to the Bara hospital on the main highway is about 25-30min.In Swanage you will be welcome from Alan in a family atmosphere with absolute respect to your privacy. If you wish you can join in nice dinners the swanage way, braai events and fun outgoings. Alan has all the insider knowledge and readily and happily shares it whenever you need and ask. I didnt make it to one of his Pilanesberg safaris but colleagues who participated were amazed! For more infos check Swanages tripadvisor reviews :) !Alan, Jonathan and the rest of the Swanage gang, thanx for helping me catch some summer breeze in Joburg! Miss u C u!
