Dreadful experience. Exactly 2 shop owners are grateful for your support. The rest see you in hijab or Islamic attire and chase you away, shouting before you enter CLOSED! CLOSED!! IM BUSY!! even with the doors open and shop empty. Its not a coincidence as 3 other Muslim families Ive shared my experience with said they had also experienced the exact same treatment. Racist, hostile and discriminating behavior on South African soil. Dont bother wasting your time.
Found a lot of things at affordable prices. Its quite busy and parking is a nightmare
Love to get good healthy fresh veg and Chinese food options. Not the cleanest place thou, but if you look pass this you will find some awesome food.
Good choice of different vegetable, sea food etc. The chinese supermarkets are ok but most other shops are pretty filthy. Wouldnt like to eat anything from there. Most take only cash without giving receipts, guess tax paying is not their greatest strength. Overflowing trash bins and sirty streets. Needs a proper clean up the entire area. Ticked the box by visiting the place but wouldnt come back nore recommend anyone to go.
Many stores offer an excellent selection of asian vegetables. Quaint resturants and little stores with a market feel. We lunched at a lovely Thai resturant, Anong, which transported us back to Thailand. The food selection and decor is traditional thai. The highlight of this experience was the temple outaide.
Many shop to find what you are looking for, great vibe and joyful place.
Industrious Chinese community. Good place for genuine Chinese food.
Its a nice place like it onlg close to early in the week
Authentic Asian ingredients at a very good price
Awesome street for any food related from China. Had great hotpot and bubble tea there👍
One of my good spots in getting Chinese things in South Africa.
I always go to Yatkee but this time I went all over. Dimsum. Oh my.
Great for a stroll around or if you looking for Asian grocery shops, clothing stores and pharmacies. Restaurants are also plentiful.
Always go there for my Asian shopping and always stay for a lunchSuoermarkets well stocked and well rangedVery good value for moneyHighly recommended
Everything you can think to find, from authentic foods, baked goods and sweets to fresh fruits and veggies. Great restaurants and boba tea included.
My wife is Thai and she loves this shopping area for Asian food items. I just enjoy the duck from a Chinese restaurant.
If you are a vegetarian/vegan, this is a place to shop without breaking the bank.
They sell awesone pastry and sushi rice
Very interesting to visit all the various shops. Huge variety of Asian supplies, fresh produce and fantastic fast food. Love the place!
Has a store to meet all your Asian needs also filled with different restaurants.
China Town is extremely dirty. There is over filled dustbin in the streets that leaves a nasty stench in the air. One of stores Pad Thai noodles was expired and luckily a worker told us not to purchase it. Check expiry dates when purchasing any food items from any of the stores
Fresh Produce every day
Feels like one is strolling through a Chinese city. I luv it.
Do not enter bad poor people blackcar park rude people
Just the parking .lots of shops and supermarkets and eating house
Its ok, but parking is a problem😐 got a chow mein from one of the takeaways and it was ok, but nothing great
Love China Town. All my Chinese spices, lovely little authentic restaurants
Its a Town with opportunities, a place where u can learn a lot of things
Not crowded easy shopping enough parking space as well
I love the diversity of this strip. Different kinds of foods and products. Is an adventurous eater so its right up my alley. If you easily disgusted stay very far away! Rather shop at woolies.
So nice and fresh vergisi and fruits you can find there also so reasonable prices
Good to find Chinese and Japanese products. Staff of these shops are not happy to assist anyone that is not of an Asian disposition but it is worth the trip.
From Chinese cabbage to Octopus. From personal chopsticks to Korean tea. From calligraphy brushes to chewing gum. Its always a valuable trip!
Always an enjoyable visit
One stop street for all your Chinese/Korean needs- foods, health, clothes, Momos etc
Good vibe 😜
Almost feels like Im in China......beautiful....!!!
Great if youre looking for Asian ingredients. Carry cash, most merchants dont have card facilities.
I like there calmness on their customers
As always quite busy. Food at various restaurants great and affordable.
Best mask compliance in Gauteng. Both inside and outside
Very reasonable prices.
Quiet but great place to pickup the Asian food supplies we need
I get all my asian ingredients here. Too many shops which is a plus. Though i only go to the Thai and Indonesian shops. I get my Uncle Roger ingredients for authentic egg fried rice. Lol.
You can buy all kindles of vegetables
Lovely safe place , .where you get all the bargains from household, bridal wear, shoes, toys, blankets, lightening including solar lights. Kitchenware, hardware, furniture, clothing, lingerie, human hair wigs and all sorts of hairs.party stuff. Wedding decor, His and Hers chairs. Carpets. Basically they cater for almost everything. There are restaurants with different foods. The food is reasonable.
I AM SO EXCITED WHEN I VISIT CHINA TOWN , IT FEELS LIKE I AM IN ANOTHER WORLD , SO MANY THINGS TO BUY FROM CHINESE, JAPANESE, KOREAN, INDONESIAN PRODUCTS. I SPEND ALMOST THE WHOLE DAY THERE SHOPPING FRUIT, VEGGIES AND ALL KINDS OF IMPORTED GOODIES.
It feels like a Chinese city with a single road
Not very clean ut all ur asian essential
Nice food and great services as always
Its a nice place with fresh veggies and fruits especially rare or indigenous ones... SOY SAUCE big sizes @THE BEST PRICES!
Went there for Chinese New Year. Very noisy and smoky when the lion goes round to each premise and hundreds of firecrackers are lit. Lots of restaurants and people selling food on the side of the road. Fireworks not too bad. Probably wouldnt go again because I imagine each year is pretty much the same.
Not bad js cool
I love going there for the experience and the food. The shops are neater and better organized than what I had been told and I can get unauthentic Asian experience at affordable prices in just a short drive from home.
Need asian rice, rice cooker, this is the right place.
Good place to get Chinese ingredients and groceries.
Amazing veggies and fresh produce not to mention outstanding authentic food. Just careful with parking, it can be crazy and not everyone is conscientious.
At this place you will get all kinds of Chinese food
Good place to shop
Its a great place to grab some authentic Asian food, whether its at a restaurant or going grocery shopping. I love popping into China town from time to time.
Awesome place to shop for your oriental cuisine....
Im not sure if its a mall
I love shopping and eating in Derrick Street. I love the hustle and bustle and the authenticity of all the shops. I love communicating in broken English to the shop owners, and exploring all of the interesting things that the Chinese supermarkets sell. Although the street it a bit dirty, I enjoy the grit that the place offers. I especially love how cheap all of the vegetable are, and frequent there often for the cheapest spring onions, exotic Chinese mushrooms, greens and tofu.
Like any Chinatown in the world, its needs some cleaning but the stores have decent stuff, large variety of locally produced and imported foods. Prices are very decent. Worth a visit.
Not enough security on site. Too many opportunists hanging about. Shop owners say that they are ex prisoners who hold them and patrons up to rob them
Plenty of Chinese shops
A good variety of household wares, clothing and greens at very affordable prices. A very heavy presence of armed guards which adds the much needed safety in Johannesburg. Free parking is not a problem
They have a good variety of Chinese vegetables and other cooking foods. Parking is a problem and the stores around could keep the place cleaner. Prices have gone up quite a bit in the last few years, but I have no choice if I want to buy the authentic ingredients for my Thai cooking. I love to shop here anyway
Just been there once.lovely place to go to.....
Love to hate it with its authentic vibe ...needs a heck of a clean and refurbish.
Great street with lots of little gems hidden away :)
Always a fun experience to wonder China town and explore the unique products that you can find in the markets, there are great restaurants to try out and the food has always been great.
Place needs renovation but entrance way arch has been improved. Great place to buy fresh veggies and Asian grocery items
We were disappointed to find that the arear is very rundown and tacky. Had lunch at Anong Thai and it was stale, dry and tasteless. Needless to say we will not be returning
Its modest but doesnt have much to offer, its just a market place
There are many restaurants on this street something to suit anyones taste. If you are looking for uniquely Asian vegetables and other food you can find in one of the many supermarkets here. Parking however is usually a problem, its better to park in in one of the side roads inside of Derrick Avenue.
Had quietened down quite a lot shops are closing at 2pm they had what I needed
Always fun to visit Cyrildene, love the shops and great to see the Street being much cleaner
Convinient shop experience, very fresh vegetables and meat
If you want to experience a different world a few minutes away from home with out the fuss of a passport.Take a drive here.Walk the whole street up and down. You will shop and find good food.
Great vibe, not touristy though. Almost no one speaks English giving you an authentic Asian experience. Found fanatic, fresh vegetables at one of the street stalls for easy less money than you would pay in another shop. Worth a visit.
A great place to go and pick up Chinese groceries, fresh vegetables and meats. It can be a bit daunting to visit if you arent Chinese but there are plenty English speaking folks to help you find what youre looking for.If youre hungry try out one of many restaurants on this street to experience authentic Chinese (not westernised like takeaways) food. I recommend Beijing Duck with pancakes.
