Excellent. Ive had the sushi here on many occasions, both sit down and takeaway, and every time Ive had a pleasant experience. The staff are friendly, sit down service is great, and above all the food was amazing. The sushi has always been fresh and the prices are really good for the quality of food youre getting. Definitely gonna be going back there again and again.

Hokkaido is an all-time favourite restaurant of ours. We have been going there for at least 7 years and they always have the freshest sushi. Their deep-fried ice cream is also excellent, and their chow mein is divine.

I am crazy full! Such a great place to have all you can eat sushi. Extremely inexpensive. However, orders did take long.

The best sushi Ive had in Joburg ! And its just so lovely to sit at a table on the sidewalk and watch cars and people go by. The staff was super friendly, presentation very cool. If youd rather sit in the shade come earlier as the sun goes down in the afternoon and then it can get rather hot outside. But theres always the inside of the shop too :)

Truly fantastic Japanese cuisine and very affordable. One of the few Japanese places to serve fried chicken sushi which is beyond incredible! Highly recommendable to all ! Chicken sweetcorn soup is amazing. Certain dishes are made on a wok live in front of the restaurant which is a very nice touch. 10/10

Besides being one of Johannesburgs treasured restaurants and a favourite among Norwood residents, Hokkaido has maintained a quality of service quite known and has the accolades to show.Their fish is fresh, tasty and very professionally prepared. The menu has stood the test of time with a few new items featuring that introduce a new generation to the delicate traditions of East Asian cuisine.I would suggest taking some time out on a mid-afternoon when the suburb is starting to get busy and sitting down for a varied selection of their sushi. Their takeaway is as delectable and definitely caters to a crowd if you have many.We enjoy date nights on Fridays which we open with an oyster shooter (try it!) ❤

Best sushi in Joburg! Been eating at Hokkaido for years and never had a bad experience. Their whole menu is authentic and delicious. Perfect service filled with friendly faces and just fantastic sushi.

Horrible service. The waiters and waitresses had their own private conversations loudly in the restaurant and left me completely unattended.

Udon broth was too salty, but the actual noodle was bouncy. Prawn and calamari were coated in a batter to accompany the udon, which after some time become uninspiring in taste and texture.

Most special restaurant in Grant Avenue. The staff is really friendly and give great service. I love their sushi and the chefs always go the the extra mile to tend to our requests! Really love this place. Feels like family by now ❤️

Very disappointing take away. The prawn tempura was all batter and no prawn, the chicken yakitori(on a skewer) were tasteless and overcooked to the extent that they were very hard. The beef teriyaki was flavourless. The sushi bar looked ok but based on my take away experience i would not go back there.

Consistently great food. Been going there for years. Fresh tasty sushi. Generous portions of sashimi and salmon in the sushi. Big selection of Japanese and Chinese food. Entertaining to watch the teppanyaki chef. Service could be a bit better.

Nice food

If I could give zero I would. Service is poor and food does not look great either. Ordered food via Uber Eats and when arrived all the food was mixed around in the bag cause of poor packaging. When contacting the restaurant the perseption was that is not their fault and I have to deal with it. Please do yourselves a favor and order somewhere else. Anything is better what this restaurant can provide.

It was my first experience going to Hokkaido. Its by no means a fancy place but the food was top class and plentiful. The service was good. I had prawn chow mein.....delicious... My granddaughter had sushi..it looked fresh moist and delicious and Im not a sushi fan.... I cant wait to get back there.

Great atmosphere, there is a chef frying meals as a feature in the seating area for guests to watch which I found interesting. Try the fried salmon steak, its really good.

Stunning Sushi.

Friendly staff and good food. We really enjoyed ourselves at Hokkaido. The service was sometimes lacking but the food was nice and didnt take too long to come. The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed and sitting near the window allows you to watch people giving the whole experience a very Norwood feel.

Old school Japanese charm. The restaurant is very quaint and clean. The servers are friendly. The food is amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

A great place to go to after youve done Escape Room across the road. I ordered sushi and dim sum here and it was delicious and fresh. The service was good and I enjoyed myself.

The best place to get sushi. The rice and noodle dishes are just as great. Affordable and generous portions; I would however not recommend the dumplings.

Whilst many restaurants on Grant Avenue have come and gone over the last few years, this establishment has stood the test of time for good reason.Look past the old decor and you’re in for good hearty Chinese and Japanese food at very reasonable prices.

The food is delicious, since we ate at this place last year September 2019, we have been going back every time.

Our favorite sushi hangout. Simple menu, dont expect a fancy choice or restaurant. But the sushi is top notch for JHB and the prices are great. I frequently have the all you can eat option. It lost a star from me because of the quality of the bathrooms and their cleanliness.

The food is amazing. Spring roles and Sushi are a must have at this place, and ontop of that the unlimited special makes this an amazing experience!! The only downside is interior layout.

Terrible place. The service is good, but the food while at least the sushi is not worth it. There were flies everywhere and the overall appearance was just bad. I do not recommend this place for sushi. I cannot comment on the rest of the food.

The first time I ordered food here I was very impressed. I got the seafood chao fan and maki roll.This time, words cannot express my frustration I ordered crispy duck and spring rolls to be delivered. The spring rolls were nice however, rest of the order was not what I expected and I am still not convinced what I received was duck meat. Also there was a different receipt in the bag.The crispy duck was in shredded form , coated and with sweet n sour sauce. I made a couple of calls before I ate the food but there was langu age barrier as well as bad connection. Eventually, I had to eat what was delivered because I had already waited for 50mins to get the food.I noticed on the menu they have sweet n sour duck . Why would the crispy duck be sweet n sour again??. I personally do not like sweet n sour sauce so, it looks like I am going to have to cook myself a meal still. While I watch my money drown.I still do not know if I got the wrong order , their advertising is bad or false. What I know is I tried to eat the crispy duck and I am not having it. I am very disappointed. Unfortunately, I cannot take photos.

Food is good and reasonable, their fashion sandwiches and crispy chicken are the best! Waitresses are not friendly and quite slow but otherwise Hokkaido is good value for money.

This is my regular chinese/japanese place to go. I love the sushi which is what I mainly buy from them but also have great dim sum, tempura, chow faan and so many other dishes.No option for me, if you are in the Norwood area- GO HERE.

If a woman has cravings and it has to be perfect sushi then this place is it 😁 salmon roses literally melted in my mouth and the tempura prawn rolls were warm and fuzzy. Prices are amaaaazing! Real authentic sushi no fancy plate sauces haha. Love this place 😍 decor needs some work 🙈
