Wonderful quaint quirky comfortable spacious warm and cosy small town hotel. Excellent all day breakfast with excellent variety which is such a good idea. Relaxing and professional on site Spa facilities. Only negative is no in room Wi-Fi and limited TV packages that was only revealed 24 hours after we checked in even after sending a technician to install a new decoder.

Very comfortable and relaxing stay. Just walking distance from the main Dullstroom drag. The cottage and rooms were very well kitted out with everything we could want from bug spray and swimming towels to fire wood, electric blankets and underfloor heating. I loved the fact the beds had rugs either side to keep your feet warm when stepping out of bed and the heater in the bathroom was much needed on one the coldest night of the year so far. Our cottage was incredibly cosy and warm and while it was a busy weekend it was not noisy or crowded. We had breakfast at the restaurant on the last day and was one of the best breakfasts I have had in a while, nice and warm and good size portions. The breakfast menu itself is quite Scottish inspired and had some very nice alternatives as well as the usual favourites. Would highly recommend Critchley Hackle for anyone looking for a relaxed, easygoing and comfortable stay away on Dullstroom.

The website offers a lodge and restaurant but does not inform that the restaurant is managed on the basis of occupancy.. This means that ...although the restaurant is open 7 days a week, it is always open on Friday and Saturday evenings and some days of the week depending on business.Imagine our disappointment, when we arrived in the late afternoon on a Sunday looking forward to a drink in the pub and a meal in the restaurant when we were informed that the restaurant was closed and the kitchen staff had gone home. We were then advised which restaurants nearby were open and directed accordingly. We were also given a remote to access the premises on our return. In these circumstances, we declined to take up our pre-booked and fully paid accommodation and when we requested a refund were informed that because we did not communicate a requirement for dinner that evening, our request was refused as accommodation had been provided.Had we been informed on booking that the restaurant was managed on the basis of occupancy, we would not have booked. No stars as no service.

We dined at the restaurant here and the service was all but lacking. Our waiter never came and checked on us, he wasnt informed about the menu, i.e what items were out of stock, what certain dishes contained. He then just disappeared. No one came and checked on our food, no one came and cleared, no one brought a bill. We just sat there for ages no one on site. Nor was the restaurant busy. Eventually we stood up to go pay at reception, I asked where our waiter was and we were told he had left for lunch. No one bothered to tell us, no one bothered to take over his service. Does management train their staff? Do they care about guest satisfaction? I think not.

Critchley Hackle was our first stop after the long journey from Germany to South Africa and we couldn’t have hoped for a better place to regain some energy. Everyone was so gentle and kind, the breakfast was amazing and the lake side lodges were just perfect. Because the kitchen was closed on Sunday evening we got recommendations from the owner where we could get some dinner at Dullstroom - also amazing food!! Highly recommended to everyone!

The lodge was very nice as you walk in and pieceful. Comparing this lodge to the three others we stayed in and there location this one only deserved 3 stars.Pros: very piece area with a pretty lake and animals, the architecture was great.Cons: if you are staying in some of the builds away from the main lodge none of the lights are on at night so you can’t. restaurant was closed before 5 this might have been because it’s the off season. The rooms, the beds need to be updated, inside locks are broken at least in our room.

Be warned if you stayed here a year ago or before don’t book again it has been a disappointment from previous experiences. Booking wrong was shifted to alternative accommodation self catering was promised same service didn’t get it. Sent an email to complain still waiting for a response the remote to the property broken and was left stranded. It was repaired and I was charged a reduced rate. The dustbin was not cleaned out and contained left over food from previous occupants. Pillows and linen sub standard. Hygiene levels need to be improved. Was told I would receive a turn down service but was informed that they had no access yet some one did the dishes did not make beds or anything else. Watch bills and change the staff make mistakes.

This iconic place in Dullstroom is known to so many travelers who had stayed there over many years passing through Dullstroom or taking a break and vacation there. We were slightly disappointed this time round with a few things going wrong but I hope it was just a momentarily relapse in service. Our room was comfortable and we enjoyed the warm fireplace and view over the lake.

Very disappointing experience, will not be back. The duvet just fitted the top of the bed so once you were in bed you were not well covered in the cold. We booked dinner on check in but when we arrived for dinner there was no booking. The food was very unappetizing and rushed. After dinner, being a Friday night we decide to have a drink in the bar. Once we had ordered our drinks the staff started switching off the lights to chivvy us on - it was not yet 9pm. it was then we saw a small sign that said the bar closed at 9pm!! On a Friday?? when we commented the staff suddenly advised they were not chasing us - why then switch off the lights? The next morning we were further disappointed by an abysmal breakfast buffet ..... very VERY limited choice and only once we had completed dishing up were we offered a choice.management seemed very poor to non existent. Even our complaints on check out fell on deaf ears. At the cost for one night we will certainly never be back and would not recommend to anyone.

Loved the authenticity and beautiful scenic views. Family friendly place and easy to access within the small town of Dullstroom. The rooms are wonderful but the showers can really do with serious cleaning. The Staff was very friendly and approachable. The food was top notch. We stayed there Friday evening the 22nd March 2019. I think it was the worst place I have ever stayed. It has really gone down. R2000 per night. R300 for a breakfast that was awful.
