Very interesting and well run museum. A must for anyone wanting to understand the different cultures and people that live in South Africa. Adjoining holocaust museum also fascinating and very sobering. Such an important reminder of the horror that can be inflicted on people.
This was so well set up, we chose to visit from the tour bus. We visited the holocaust memorial and it was such an eye opener. Very good and accurate information. You can spend hours in here just reading and observing the primary sources supplied here. Definitely worth a visit and the lady at the front was so lovely and informative.
It is an amazing place to visit where you would be exposed to many memorial things. One can experience the era of Jewish. Loved to visit this museum.
Housed in the original synagogue that was replace next door when they outgrew it. It is a Jewish campus with the newer synagogue, Holocaust Museum and a Kosher dairy deli.It traces the history of Jews coming to South Africa, notable Jewish families, and some recreations of typical rooms in a Jewish household in the basement.
One of best curated museums in Cape Town. Fascinating history of the communitys past and present.
Shocking reminder of how horrible human beings can be.. The holocaust museum shocked me and reminded me of what a nasty history our recent European history has been. It also reminded me what heroes our grandparents and forefathers were for fighting against this madness. My deepest sympathies with all Jews everywhere. Jeremy Castillo, Malta 🇲🇹
What a great experience. The history of Jews in South Africa and their contribution to this country are vividly shown. The Netsuke collection is astonishing. Well worth a visit.
Really a must visit for anyone visiting Capetown, very well done. I will most certainly be back
Very big eye-opener
A very beautiful and well organized permanent exhibition and interesting temporary ones. Dont must the Netsuke.
Great museum to visit. Exhibits are brilliantly done and very informative. Very well done
I loved that my children got an activity book upon entering. It made the outing much more interactive and exciting for them. My favourite part was the town setting at the botom. Just note that anyone above the age of 12 pays to enter. It is R100 per person at the moment.
Polished venue presenting artifacts & displays documenting Judaism & Jewish life in South Africa.
Disappointed, no Jewish people in the staff.
The museum houses a fascinating history of the Jewish influence on all spheres of South African life, and interesting history and religious backgrounds as well. Pity some of the media content was ageing somewhat and of low video quality. I wasnt able to go to the Holocaust Museum this time, will do so next time.
Unbelievable history, holocaust, well presented!
The reception people was so nice but the museum closed..
I learned so much about Jewish history; especially, the Ethiopian Jews that I didnt know before today. Thank you for sharing their stories with dignity! I will definitely tell my friends in the U.S. to visit.
An interesting and detailed history of Jewish people in South Africa, the recreated shtetl a highlight for me. The Holocaust Museum (located on the same complex) is a detailed and moving account of the horrors of Nazism and the terrible suffering of its victims; it honours their pain and does a great service to humanity in reminding us to be vigilant to the horrors of which we are a capable. It is everyones duty to heed its warning.
Never realized how much of the Jewish community had settled in SA. Excellent documentation and history. Suprising to learn Mandela was viewed as a righteous gentile until after visiting the musem.
Very moving. Everyone should see this museum. Very well run. Excellent
Nice summary of Jewish South African history and view of the very first synagogue in South Africa. There is also the Holocaust museum. Great if you know little about it but disappointing if youve seen any related museums in Europe. There is a lovely cafe on a square/plaza in between the two museums serving tasty food. I had delicious falafel with Hummus and Israeli salads.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of interesting information and fascinating permanent exhibitions. Beautiful building. Welcoming and knowledgeable staff.
Well designed museum with artifacts, reproduction of an immigrants home, and explanations of Jewish immigrants to South Africa. The documentary about the relationship between Nelson Mandela and the Jewish community is very interesting but you have to request for it to be set up especially for your viewing. (Make sure you have ID to enter the premises)
Its ok..the holocaust museum is next door, alot more interesting and there is no entry fee.
A really well presented history of the Jewish arrival in SA and the subsequent obstacles thrown in their way. Very well laid out, clean and the fact that it includes a real synagogue helps with the atmosphere. The cafe is great too! Well worth a visit and located in a beautiful area of the city.
Good place to learn Jewish arrival in South Africa. Filled with amaizing arts
Awesome to see the history behind the Jewish culture and what happened in Germany. Would love to visit it again some day.
Absolutely amazing history in this place, a must see. Please dont skip it
Spent 2 hours there and could have done with another 30 to 45mins. Well detailed account of the jewish settlement in SA followed by an intense lookback at the holocaust. Worth the visit.
Great explanation about the creation of a Jewish community in South Africa. Very modern and with a lot of unusual details, like the reconstruction of a Lithuanian shtetl, a typical Jewish village from the country that brought around 40.000 Jews to South Africa. Definitely worth a visit.
Tour guide informative, now I know how the Jews helped South Africans during apartheid. And they have an example of how their houses looked back then...
A great place to find out about the huge positive contribution that the Jewish people have made to Cape Town and South Africas development. The adjoining Holocaust Museum is a sobering reminder of mans disdain for the value of a human life. Any human life.
I spent an afternoon at the South African Jewish Museum in February and was very moved by the entire presentation. I am grateful for the experience and the fact I learned more about my families journey from Russia. Thankyou for being the stewards of our rich culture. Shalom
Unfortunately they would not allow me in because I refuse to record my identification number on their paper. I showed them identification but still refused.Couldnt give an answer why they wanted my identity number.Interestingly, they allowed Jewish people in without filling out details.
Information not 100% true
Worth visiting. Its so far one of my favorite museums visited in cape town. Real and rich history on display with lovely tour guides to explain along. The Hebrew congregation building is so nice. And the self-supporting staircase is beautifil
A very enlightening experience. I wasnt aware of the large number of jewish immigrants who had fled to South Africa.
Its a must see. Very well done 👍
A must if you are interested in the history of the Cape Town Jewish Community. Beautifully displayed with unusual exhibits. Dont miss this one!
Fantastic displays of Jewish life and history in Cape Town and South Africa. Well worth the visit.
Beautiful and its a part of our jewish history . Very interesting and informative.
Small and different. Really aesthetic and modern design. Worth visiting the restaurant as well.
Pleasant and informative. Kids enjoyed the tour because they were active participants throughout
Very emotional and yet so much rich history one can learn from this place, worth checking out when in Cape Town.
“Sad and Inspirational ”The history of the Jewish people in South Africa is as important as the present. The displays were so interesting and the staff were excellent. People travelling from many corners of the planet for many reasons and living in a new country were vulnerable people. They were given the opportunity in South Africa, although with trepidation they struggled through.
This is a must visit and I that any one that loves religious diversity should go and get the background of our mens believes to have a greater respect for others belief system.
Clean, friendly and well expressed. A must visit when in Cape town
Excellent museum. So much to learn. You will need identification to get entrance. Passport or ID book
Great experience and lovely people that work there 👍
Awesome museum, very historic and well run. Made me reflect on the past along.
The museum is full of meaningful relics that gives one insight into Jewish history and culture in the Cape.
Very well laid out and informative museum. Ideal for children.
A modern Centre in the heart of Government Avenue attached to the original first Synagogue of Cape Town and its GRAND SYNAGOGUE opened to the Congregation in 1904. An historical journey of JUDAISM including its Jewish Communitys role in pre-Aparrheid and post- Apartheid actions in South Africa.
Well maintained and informative about SA Jewish history. Lacks information about Jewish religion. ZAR 60 per person is bit pricey entrance fee for this museum.
Very interesting displays. Both audio and visual.
Ultrahigh security upon entrance. Mediocre gift shop. Nice sunny inner plaza.
Great insight into the Jewish community and how it played a role in the greater South African story
Very friendly service! Restaurant not great, but overall fantastic experience and worth the money.
Quite an experience. The holocaust centre is perhaps not for the faint of heart but the Jewish museum is quite a jem! A must visit if youre in Cape Town.
Interesting history. And excellent curation of the Jewish community in SA.
Nice museum and history. Be sure to visit the holocaust museum next door.
Was a great experience, I would love to visit again
Short ,easy to read and loads of images. Good insight into the Jewish influence on south Africa.
Memorable, at times heart wrenching yet triumphant, a spirit I will carry with me
Brian - Gave an amazing PerspectiveThis Holocaust museum outshines Berlin
An awesome experience with our guide Roz. Very informative.
Am important fixture in the city worth checking out to get a better feel for the unique and changing roles of the Jewish community in South Africa; a group under pressure in South Africa due to the ANC and Mandelas alignment with the plight of Palestinians.
The holocaust musem was a powerful account of history. Must see.
The displays make you realise the suffering the Jewish people went through!
The Netsuke exhibition is amazing. Check it out and do yourself a favour!
Absolutely worth a visit. A lot of history to be learnt and remembered.
Very cool museum. A lot of heritage here.
Must see.
Awesome history not only about the Jewish culture but also on WW2
Thou shalt not be a victim, thou shalt not be a perpetrator, but, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander!
An incredible museum! Worth a visit.
Very informative. Not too expensive.
A beautiful building filled with history.
Excellent museum. Truly
Beautifully curated space
Stunning architecture, beautiful stained glass windows.
Great place to get an understanding of the Jewish history and religion
A must see for any traveler or resident of Capetown. It blends the Jewish history with the African history. The parallels will open your eyes to injustices all over the world.
Interesting and thoughtful presentation.
Great history and the guide told history well.
Some interesting small exhibits
