This museum is incredible. Being able to stand in the very room the first heart transplant was performed is life changing. I want to be a surgeon though so my opinion is biased. Regardless though, the museum is thorough in providing all the information about the relevant people and provides all the facts surrounding the transplant and Christ Barnard himself. It also gives credit to everyone involved and not just Christ Barnard, who was the surgeon who performed the transplant. Our guide was very knowledgeable and willing to answer our many questions. Would recommend to anyone going to Cape Town!
Absolutely incredible, interesting and comprehensive museum. Extensively display of newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, life size mock-ups of scenes in the theatre rooms as well as a film about Chris Barnards life.Worthwhile to visit, for all age categories. Various prices for South Africans and foreigners, as well as student and pensioner prices.Book in advance, if possible and allow for approximately 2 hours minimum to view everything.
Very interesting well designed. We really enjoyed it. Trace was probably the best tour guide Ive ever encountered. She was thorough, interesting, an amazing storyteller and funny. Thank you, Trace!
A lot of care and love is put into this small museum. One is very nicely introduced back into time by the story telling of (I think her name was Christine) and the collection of letters/videos/posters/pictures and the silicon replicas. Amazing step for mankind and science to do a heart transplant at that time. We enjoyed every minute of the 2 hour tour.Useful tip: Parking can be done at the hospital car park. Pay before u leave on level 4. Its just 6 Rand per hour.
What a great experience to witness an iconic figure in our Health Sciences in South Africa. My first experience was with my high school. We had a Life Science research project, so my teacher decided to take us there. At the venue youll find props of Dr Bernard. There are tour guides which are excellent in their jobs. They actually assisted us with our research project during that time. In order to visit the museum, you need to make bookings online or at the venue itself.
Absolutely incredible. Trace our tour guide was so passionate and amazing. Loved every minute of it.
This is such an interesting, well laid out and presented museum. It is highly recommended and really should be a pre requisite for any student interested in pursuing a career in medicine.
Great and engaging guide. Excellent operating theater displays. The museum advertises round trip transportation free of charge but I wasnt able to get a pick up for my same day reservation although they did provide a ride back.
The staff here are excellent. The fact that its the actual theatres and ER used makes it so surreal. Definitely worh a visit.
This is the most memorable restoration of medical history Ive ever visited. In reality this museum probably captures the most celebrated medical moment that was the first successful human to human transplant ever! Great to experience. The hospital is also worth visiting and touring if possible.
I absolutely LOVED it!! The tour was amazing and it was wonderful learning about the journey the people involved with these transplants went through. The operating theatre as well as the study and Denises room with the dresses, is absolutely georgous! The effort put into the whole museum is magnificent. I would definitely recommend it! It is an absolute must see for everyone.
I went to this museum with my friends. When you are not local you really need to pay a lot of money which is kind of unfair but the men who was working there was so nice and friendly. He helped us with everything and gave us a special tour. He really made our visit special. All in all the museum is very interesting. I came out much more clever than before. They put a lot of effort to create a great museum and we even got a little souvenir from the men. It was a heart that his wife made.Very special day.
One of the most fascinating and informative museums. Love the way they have laid out the two surgery rooms as they were on that memorable day. Highly recommended.
Great Museum run by passionate staff. We really enjoyed our tour. It has nothing in common with the usual museum
A cool way to tell the story of Cape Towns big place in medical history. The staff are passionate and the museum moving.
This is not some static display of gore, but a presentation of an Elon Musk of the 1960s. (Sadly he left as well). But Chris Barnards story is inspiring. A maverick who took the gap in history and laid the foundation for others to follow. He was the first drop over the lip of the innovation. Well worth a visit and there are lots of little articles, cards and odd bits of medical paraphernalia to keep you busy for a while.
OMG😷 first of all keep an eye on your heart there. THIS IS THE BEST MEUSUEM I have ever visited😍
An incredible experience. Discovering what and how made South Africa and Christiaan Barnard the world leaders in heart transplant surgery. A very informative tour hosted by Trace whos knowledge on the history of transplant surgery was staggering as well as (at times) humorous. I remember seeing the breaking news when I was a child in 1967 but to see the place where it all happened was amazing.
I found it very informative and interesting, giving me knowledge regarding the players involved in the first successful open heart surgery
Amazing experiences but not a lot of history is given on the tour. I went on 1 and my wife went on her own and the tours couldnt even be compared she had such a great tour guide compared to mine that rushed everything
Amazing museum.2 hour tour and I was totally riveted. Highly recommend a visit.
Great experience to see a portrial of the first heart transplant , very infomitive, well worth the visit
Its a must to do when visiting Capetown. So interesting. Great enthusiastic guides
Despite me not showing up at a time of one of the tours, the lovely woman who worked there volunteered to show me around a little before closing. normally, although not obvious from the leaflets, you must visit at one of the tour times - it is not the norm to just show up and browse. the location is a bit eery but a great musuem. informative experience.
Unforgettable experience, guides were so professional. A must see.
The tour was extremely interesting and informative and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn something about south African history thats not the same old. Our tour guide was well informed and new the events very well. The remake of the theatre was incredibly real and made us feel like we were there. Thank you for an amazing tour.
An absolute must if you have any interest medicine/Cardiology. A very special little museum run by passionate people.
The guided tour is an amazing experience. Our guide definitely knows everything she needs to inform us. A great step for the humanity was take there.
Excellent and a worth visit especially for doctors and surgeons. The story of Chris Barnard is inspiring which is told and depicted very well in the museum run by the hospital. The museum tour is excellent.
Its a great place to spend some time in for both young and not so young.
What a great place to visit amazing for family outings or just a beautiful tour of the museum my sister and I had a blast we learn something everyday
The location is a little bit out of town but we hired a taxi which made the experience a little more costly. The tour was extremley interesting and lasted two hours. The lady was very knowledgable and very passionate about CB and his work. This made it very entertaining even if you are not from a medical background, which we werent.
Well organised 2 hour tour. Our tour leader was so passionate and the insight into heart transplant and indeed christiaan barnard was amasing. Best money spent on a historic event
What a great Museum! Definitely worth taking the time and Family to go and learn about this amazing moment in history!
Very nicely setup museum to illustrate the process to the first heart transplant. I would recommend this tour to anyone. Bit pricey but worth it.
A fascinating insight into Chris Barnards passion and life. Its quite an emotional visit and the guide, Trace, made it very interesting and enjoyable. Well worth a visit.
The guides pace was slow and a bit tedious. I had been looking forward to the tour, but was disappointed. Perhaps it would have been better self-guided at your own pace, but this is not allowed. The price we were quoted on the phone was lower than what they charged when we arrived.
Really was blown away but what was demonstrated and explained.... the tour guide was out of this world.
One of the best museums in the world with some of the best storytellers ever.
A really fabulous museum paying tribute to all the key role players in the first heart transplant in the world #proudlysouthafrican
So interesting! Stories about all the different people involved and related events, plus how society reacted.
Fascinating story of the 1st heart transplant in the world.
Good place, but only if youve been evertwhere else already
Well presented with life size displays, excellent talk by Christine and numerous letters. Thought the inclusion of the donor and her family a important part of the history. Extremely pleased we visited and thought the time and cost well worth it. Thank you. Jenney Manks New Zealand
This was very informative, and the lady doing the tour was a fabulous speaker.
Tour guide was extraordinary. A story worth hearing. Pity the surrounding hospital is on such a sad state
Groote Schuur Hospital was the location of the first cardiac transplant ever in the world. This museum highlights this with some interesting facts.
Amazing ... It felt like I was there for the actual first heart transplant
Breath taking!This is a must.
An experience that I will never forget. A must visit.
Great service, staff looked after me well
Educationally its great.I do believe they could do more to make it more existing.
Awesome.. Very well maintained and preserved the place which gave birth to the heart transplantation
We usually dont like museums, but this was a very interesting. The friendly tour guide showed us the dog lab, a 25 minute film with interviews and the original rooms where the first surgery was done. We tried to reserve a tour via phone or web site, but a visit to the museum entry is enough.
Gives great context to a leap forward in medicine
Booked a Tour for 11am an they confirmed it. all Doors closed, just a message „watching the Game“.They could have told me yesterday, they are not doing Tours during the game! Very Bad communication!
Pretty interesting and informative. Even if you are not into medicine.
So much history... I really enjoyed the tour.
Tour was absolutely brilliant with pationate tour guides!
It was very informative great experience
Not a place for me.... Its a Hospital for crying out loud!

The tour is well worth the fee charged, a wonderful learning experience.
