“To E-bike or not to E-bike” That is what I was contemplating for quite some time. In my mind you cycle to stay active. So what is the use of turning your bike into a motorcycle? I am 60 years of age and keep telling myself that I need to cycle to avoid becoming totally obese. Amanda love to cycle with but because of my obsession not to become a fossilized vegetable she struggles to keep up with what is supposed to be a “fun” ride.I was totally amazed and overwhelmed by the new fun we discovered cycling together after I bought her a little E-bike. I could go as fast as I wanted and she would have no trouble to keep up with me. In fact, I battled to keep up with her. Suddenly the lekker in cycling was back. I’m defiantly not one for writing reviews, although I do like to read them when purchasing.I’ve decided to write this one because of the never-ending good service that I get from Chilled Squirrel.So you have decided to get an e-bike and I’m sure you have “trolled” all the sites and now must be as confused as I was.Initially I chose Chilled Squirrel because of the prompt response and answers to my many questions regarding the different motors. I sent them my bike and they fitted a rear hub motor and had it couriered to me in George, that was 2 years ago.At my age (76) mobility becomes so important and with a very active German shepherd even more so. My knee has been giving trouble so peddling was a problem. I did a conversion, removed the peddles and installed a foot-plate and have just had a ”mid motor” fitted it’s like going from a 50cc to a 250cc. I now have 5 power speed settings and I have the normal gearing as well. Both brake levers have a cut-out to the motor. As there is less demand on the motor the battery is lasting twice as long as the rear hub. Remember I’m not peddling so it’s all battery.For more info on the conversion speak to Matt.Bottom-line, Matt and his great mechanic and staff at Chilled Squirrel supported my need all the way, never had the usual…won’t work, can’t be done.

.Choosing the right electric bike is not easy, there’s just so many choices and jargon to get through. After visiting the main supplier sites I settled for Chilled squirrel. I found them the most informative when it came to me asking (probable) dumb questions and sorting out which unit would suit me and keeping in touch at all times They did the retrofit to my bike, which was worth the wait.I settled for a rear hub motor which is heavier than I thought but does give me a feeling of substance and quality and I got used to it very quickly. The manual can be a little daunting at first but settles down when you start applying it.The ride – well, it’s more like gliding than riding, like a scooter without the noise. Excellent at pulling away and I find the throttle very smooth and responsive.At 73 I’m on the road again. If you have walking or knee problems this could be the answer. It’s great to be out on the hiking trails with the wind blowing in what-little-hair I’ve got left.I still get mail from Matt asking if there are any problems and if I’m enjoying the ride.The service was excellent and so is the electric motor.Charles Knight

Ive had my e-bike for approximately 3 months now, and have used it regularly on my daily work commute between Somerset West and Stellenbosch (32km return). The bike enables me to get to work without having to drive, and without having to shower once I get there, given that I never break a sweat! Better still, it feels like Ive had some light exercise in the morning, before having to sit down at a desk job.It has really changed the way I think about (inter)city travel, and I hope to spread the enthusiasm and got public opinion, and municipal favour, to support further infrastructure that enables better and safer cycling.Chilled Squirrel have been great in getting me started, and I than k them for the time theyve spent in helping me choose a bike that I really love.

In the end, it was a bit of a no-brainer : Matt, Anthony and Tyrone at Chilled Squirrel offer the best value-for money, reliability, after-sales service and attention to detail that anybody interested in an e-bike could possibly want. You can look elsewhere for a better deal, but you will be wasting your time!

My retro fitted 500 watt mid-drive mountain bike is giving me a huge amount of pleasure. At 72, the only person I can challenge when riding a conventional bike is myself, gone are the days of riding a sub three hour Argus. But now, if I choose, Im the fastest bike on the road. Its such a thrill to pass the young and mean muscles machines and hear the comments - I feel young again. No hill or wind is too much and I return home feeling energized. I would not trade my bike for any top end conventional bike. I can motor up Smits Hill or Suikerbossie at 30 mph at the push of a button and a little pedal power. Ebiking is the way to go.

I live in Swakopmund, Namibia, where I regularly ride into the Namib desert on a Mongoose Fat Bike converted to an electric bike by Chilled Squirrels about 9 months ago. Even though Cape Town and Swakopmund are far apart, the service of Chilled Squirrels has been so excellent that they might just as well have been next door to me. When Matt and Anthony claim they provide personal service, they really mean it. They are always friendly and helpful, and unbelievably patient.Before I bought the bike from Chilled Squirrels, I told them what I needed, and they gave me exactly what I required for this challenging desert terrain I love so much. Their work is of the best quality.My e-fat bike has a difficult life, which involuntarily makes me a troublesome customer. I often ride on trails you cannot negotiate with normal MTBs (I also ride a MTB, so I know). I ride to places that would be extremely difficult to reach on a non-e fat bike, which saps a lot of energy out of you. With an E-fat bike, you can explore and reach remote spots without “premature” exhaustion, or you can go into canyons you wouldn’t enter with normal bikes; and if you get into trouble, which easily happens riding alone in the desert, the power of the e-bike can get you out of tight spots. I take a spare battery with me, and depending on conditions and with the appropriate style, I have a range of 100 to 130 kilometers per trip.When my e-bike needed repair after a crash of mine and after I had got stuck in a deep riverbed a few months ago, I sent the bike for repair to Chilled Squirrels in Cape Town. The bike was refurbished expertly. A new 350 Watt mid motor (still under guarantee) was installed free of charge, and the cables were renewed. My fat-bike was returned as good as new. Matt and Anthony showed Angelic patience with me, even when a difficult customs official caused unnecessary delays. After another crash of mine while negotiating a steep canyon a few weeks ago, I needed a new battery holder, and Chilled Squirrels immediately provided me with one (plus a kickstand).My e-fat bike has done several thousand kilometers by now, and I can only recommend Chilled Squirrels, for they are reliable and real specialists in the field.
