One must probably know the history a little better to understand why a Dutch language monument in Burgersdorp. There are actually four monuments on this square. The language monument seems to be the oldest, and commemorates the first national resolution on the Dutch language (1879), and the first Dutch deed in parliament (1882).The same memorial praises Moedertaal and Vaderland in 1893. And on the third side, recognition to the zealots of Afrikaans. The original language monument / statue that was apparently damaged, taken away and found again in Kingwilliamstown is without head (presumably the damage). The other two monuments are for fallen heroes of the Boer War, and then the Ikhusasa Lethu memorial (in its own fenced area).
