BIGGEST KAVADY IN SOUTHERN HERMISPHEREBRAKE VILLAGE 109th ANNUAL KAVADY – TONGAAT, KZNThe 109 year old, Brake Village Temple is one of the oldest in Tongaat, history and a sense of spirituality permeate from the temple with thousands of devotees will be attending their 109th annual Punguni Woothira Kavady Mahotsavam (Kavady), which is the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere and took place on Saturday 31 March 2018.The Kavady procession starts at Brake Village Temple and proceeds to the Outspan Ground in Tongaat, for devotees to meet at a central point and offer prayer to Lord Muruga, in their masses. Kavady Chariots reflects true Indian art.Brightly coloured and decored with fresh Marigold Flowers, they really are very colourful and visually appealing.Devotees can be seen in state of trance that have body and tongue piercings with hooks and needles, that form part of the ritual.Vegetarian meals are provided and served to more than 20 000 devotees that attend annually.
