The food was very tasty and well prepared. We had an incredible bobotie and home-made chicken pie.Lovely restaurant with outdoor seating and great service.

Lovely, quirky coffee shop in a beautiful old building. Good offerings on the menu - the roosterkoek with homemade apricot jam is a winner! Service was very slow with the kitchen not quite keeping up with the demands of peak season.

Lovely place as in venue. The food is very good. Staff seemed friendly at first. The waitress didnt know the the menu very well. She gave me at lunch menu and it was 17:30, didnt know where or what things where. She also got quiet rude and defensive when I wanted to split the bill into 2 as she didnt know how. There was no manager on duty. it got to the point where it become an argument and i had to tell her that how she speaks to people is wrong.It wasnt nice at all, I left feeling disturbed. I also wanted to buy olive oil that was sold there and they didnt know the price so I couldnt purchase it. Maybe they should train their staff.

The Old Gaol is an amazing stop when going on a road trip. The menu is diverse and embraces South African cuisine. The staff were extremely kind, would highly recommend.

We enjoyed lunch at the Old Gaol while being on our way to Mossel Bay. The place is very lovely and the service is such a pleasure. The lunch was ok, the cakes though were amazingly good! Try the traditional milk tart!

The waitress had to be called to take the order.The toilet had an unpleasent odour of urine.The vegtables with the chicken pie were boiled frozen veggies and the meat of the patties were so finely minced it felt as if they were processed polony .Unfortunately not a pleasent experience in spite of all the positive cliches posted in the restaurant.

We had a lovely lunch break here. We tried the home made chicken pie which was really nice. The homemade lemonade is also good. It is a cosy nice place for a stop over and I can only recommend to eat here. Staff was nice and friendly. Food came very quick!

We were seated outside under the tree and enjoyed very good service today. Our waitress was very keen to always make sure we were happy. Reading the other reviews it looks like Old Gaol is really making an effort. The tapas menu has a lot of potential and this is the only reason why I would only rate it 4 out of 5. A more balanced and more classical tapas menu would make it a 5/5.

We stopped by for something quick on the 25th of Sept 2019 between 3 and 4 pm. The Old Gaol Cafe was recommended by the manager at our previous hotel. It was a cute place and we had the roosterkoek with Cajun chicken and roast veggies. It was delicious and I even said so to the server. Cut to 2 and a half hours later, both my husband and I are throwing up non stop, we were terribly sick with nausea and vomiting and this was the only thing we ate. Thankfully we had reached our next hotel by that time. I hate to think what would have happened if we were still on route. We were sick for the whole night and part of the next day. I have never vomited so much and felt so sick and helpless. As we end our SA trip, still reeling, I am disappointed and angry that we had such a terrible experience with what looked like a quirky, charming and harmless place.

Perfect spot to rest and have some refreshments. Trees providing much appreciated shadow and a view of the beautiful church. Smoked springbok carpaccio and a vanilla milkshake were 👌

Lovely restaurant in historic part of swellendam

The owner is friendly and still cares deeply about the restaurant and you can see it through the delicious food that they serve. The staff is friendly and ensure that you are made at home. The vibe is relaxing and calming so I would recommend this place for a quick snack or even filling your tummy when you are very hungry.

We spent a Friday night at De Companjie across the road and walked over for dinner at the Old Gaol. It was quiet ...about 6 tables occupied. Candlelit dinners on the go. .... we had g & ts with our delicious bunless burgers and salad. Fantastic ambience and our waitress was excellent.

I loved it. Little like a museum. Nice coffee and friendly service. It is good man. Many places of interest in Sw/dam, make sure you include this one.👍

Brilliant... Had a relaxing lunch there on boxing Day. Best Quiche ever. They had a staff problem in that staff did not pitch... So they were very busy..service was a bit slow but admirably handled by the staff that was there. We went to the Old Gaol Restaurant as we had vouchers from our guesthouse. Upon arrival and presentation of the voucher we were instructed briefly and pretty rude by an elderly lady that the voucher is only valid for a very basic breakfast and that no beverages were included. At a point I felt almost like we came begging for food. I have rarely encountered such an unfriendly treatment by a restaurant staff. It would have been an easy thing to tell us that information in a friendly manner and show us some other options we could add to the basic breakfast instead.So we just had our food, paid for our hot beverages and left again quickly. Quite a shame, the restaurant had a cool look, the other staff seemed nice and the (very basic) breakfast was ok, too.

We went there last year in July and this year I cannot wait to go there again! The cake is of the best flavor and texture I have ever tasted and very fresh. The roosterkoek had grilled veggies, full of flavor. Love it!

Shocking service. Apart from the fact that there are only two waitresses and people had to collect their own orders, the management is not up to standard. The waitress was good, but she was let down by the kitchen and in turn the customer as well. We received our order in drips and drabs. Half the order never came, food was cold and the omlet of which the youngest at our table ordered was revolting. Ive never been to a place that was so unorganized and unconcerned with the appeal of their food. I do not recommend anyone coming here.

Poor food presentation. Incorrectly advertised meals. How does a restiarant run out of steawberry or chocolate milkshakes at 1 pm. Will not be visiting anytime soon.

Really great food with an awesome view of the Grotekerk. The playground is right down the stairs. You have to try the self made Bread, its awesome.

Slow service and overpriced. Brought my main meal and had to wait on the side dish, by the time they brought it my meal was ice cold! Their rooster brood was rather tough and chewy as well.

Very slow service. Ordered 2 takeaway coffees and it took about 15 to 20 minutes. On the other hand the milk tart looked amazing.

Ordered breakfast, easy over eggs, bacon and grilled tomato with toast. Egg white still running. Asked for it to be flipped in pan. Came back, egg over cooked, the tomato burned myouth to pieces and I realised the plate had been stuck onto a microwave to solve the running egg white problem. Not a place to expect good food!

Verry lovely Place with good food

The roosterkoek and cakes were good, but have visited three times now, each time hoping for a better experience, but all the times the service was terrible. Our tables were dirty, we waited ages for food and the bill, had to walk around search for a waiter and beg them to take our order on one occasion (after waiting 30minutes at the table). Upon complaining we were very rudely treated by the managers. With the horrible service we could easily have just walked away without paying and they probably would not have even noticed us leaving... I would never go back again.

If you like freshly prepared roosterkoek then you cant miss Old Gaol in Swellendam. Lovely lawns to relax on and let the kids run around after a few hours in the car. Clean and neat bathrooms too. A good pit stop.

Unfortunately Im not one to complain but I find myself doing so today. To begin the ginger beer was dissatisfying, my 7 year old brother did not receive a single drink after ordering a milkshake. My second issue was the food, it was good but again when it was brought to us my brother again did not receive his meal only until I had finished my meal did he receive it, it was simple a omelet. The other meals were cold. I ordered chips and did not receive it. All in all very disappointed but I would like to point out it is not our waiters fault I blame the management. If I could advise you guys please get more waiters and maybe do your management duties.

Decent brekkie spot in Swellendam.... Just a pity they dont allow dogs and it was pouring with rain and miserable on the day.

Bad service. I ordered a T-bone with chips and salad but instead got a T-bone with chips and veggies. My wife ordered the homemade chicken pie and it was full of chicken bones. Food is not bad but nothing special.

A nice stop on the way , we enjoyed the local dishes that were recommend by the staff. very friendly staff.Lovely place .
