We used Hanja and Johan du Toit for our uncontested divorce. (Initiated by my then wife, against my wishes, but not contested by me.) I thought long and hard about giving an attorneys firm only 2 stars, so I have tried to keep this assessment as objective and balanced as possible.First, the positives:* The initial consultation was professional, focussed and productive.* The rates were reasonable, from what we saw elsewhere.* The initial explanation of the overall process outlines was clear.* They heeded my request to include both parties in correspondence and updates.Unfortunately, there were several negatives for me:* Documents and templates were, in my view, not up to a professional standard (formatting, spelling, faulty personal details). If I am involved in legal proceedings, I want the documentation to be impeccable.* For someone who has never been through a divorce, many specific questions only arise as the process evolves. In my case, I was the defendant and I did not wish for the divorce to happen, but in order to avoid a legal contest, I did accede to the plaintiffs wishes to terminate the marriage. In order to find closure, I therefore needed to take great care to understand what was happening, and to shape the process as carefully as possible, with both our interests at heart. I informed them of this in our initial discussion. However, as the preparations progressed, it appeared increasingly to me that Du Toits did not have our joint interests at heart, but only wished to conclude mechanistically the process that the plaintiff had started.* One example: in the advanced stages, when the settlement had been prepared, I was sent a draft copy of the summons. Given that I had already asked several questions earlier, they pre-empted any further questions by referring (in capital letters) to the summons as standard wording for an uncontested divorce, that would not be changed. This placed me in a quandary, because on the one hand I wanted to respect my wifes wishes and just accept the summons, but on the other hand I saw that it contained a phrase which I could not accept conscionably. When I asked Du Toits how I could accept the summons with a good conscience, only then did they explain that the summons merely represents the plaintiffs view. And immediately in the same e-mail, they threatened to bill me for their time if I submitted any further questions.* Only on the morning of our court appearance, while waiting in the courthouse, their advocate informed us that the settlement which Du Toits had prepared, and on which I had collaborated intensely,1) had been rejected by the Family Advocate (yet nobody told us this) and2) would quite possibly not be acceptable to the judge. This caused me a HUGE amount of stress, on top of the trauma of a divorce I did not wish for in the first place. When I look at the complete service package that we received from Du Toits, then regrettably, the negatives outweigh the positives. Du Toits may be highly familiar with divorce processes, but a first-time divorce client is not. In my opinion, they may have lost sight of this. I therefore score 2 stars and cannot recommend them - especially not to anyone who needs to be guided through the gritty details and unexpected pitfalls of a divorce.Given the content of their last e-mail, I have not sent them any direct service feedback. But if they are interested in improving their business, they should find my review here.

When you pay for documentation you expect it to be free from spelling mistakes and obvious errors, this is unfortunately not the case.Johan du Toit Attorneys regard themselves as specialists in mediation which they are definitely not and did not exhibit any expertise in this regard.Unfortunately I will not recommend Johan du Toit Attorneys; if you compare costs, professionalism and expertise there are attorneys that far exceed this practice.
