Excited care given by the Doctors, Sisters and Nurses. The hospital is kept super clean and hygienic. They are a little bit short of staff because of the Covid pandemic, but they still manage to give you the best care and attention you need to get healthy. Just a pity I left the hospital with a huge bed-sore which I got during the first week of my stay in ICU.

Absolutely a horrific experience. Would never recommend anyone else to go there for any treatment. You get the worst treatment and when you feel you would rather leave they hold you against your will . Seen people who had surgery come back with complications while waiting for 13 hours not to get any help . This is probably what you can expect of our public health system . After the long wait you can not just leave but they force you to sign a RHT to cover their backsides . DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU PLAN TO STAY ALIVE FOR ANOTHER FEW YEARS .

Patience. That word works wonders in this place.Trust me, I understand that you’re either frustrated or ill and tired, but the best thing you can do is remain calm, cool and collected.I spent 16 days in this hospital, it came with its high and low points.First and foremost, Dr Pretorius is a phenomenal gem. I had an ERCP and a cholecystectomy done by him. What I truly appreciated was that he was straight forward yet compassionate with his patients. Please note: there is NO HOT WATER for showers. I and one other lady were the only ones to use it daily.Toilets need to be cleaned hourly and thoroughly, not once a day. I cleaned the toilet after 24 hours had lapsed. Yep, gloves, soap and toilet paper. What can I say. I needed to use it.Food isn’t amazing, but I was grateful for it.Now, for those who do not know, a team of junior doctors will monitor you throughout the day and night and give a walk through feedback session to the head doctor/professor in the morning. These junior Doctors were finally put in line when Dr Pretorius had to do the walk through with them one morning. I found that most of the junior Doctors were all over the place and many lacked compassion and failed to communicate with their patients. I understand that they do +24 hour shifts, but it’s not fair to patients. I recall one evening where a Doctor re-adjusted my drip instead of taking it out and putting it elsewhere on my hand. In pain and that area swelling, I told a different doctor who laughed and said she’d call the other doctor back. Surprise, surprise, I took it out myself later that evening since no one came to assist me.The nurses from ward 6.5, general surgery, were great. Honestly they felt like a group of mothers and sisters to me over time.I’ll admit, there were a few that I didn’t care for. I recall one evening when they had to put antibiotics into my drip, which was not in, so she threw away my antibiotics and didn’t bother to give me the oral option as the other nurses did.Though the ones that actually care for you, make you laugh and treat you like a human being are wonderful. Trust me, there are more good staff members than bad ones.

The hospital is pretty clean for a government facility, the doctors/surgeons are wonderful and really do their jobs well. Some of the nurses are ok, there are a few that like to talk about the patients to one another in a bad way, especially when they think you dont know that they are talking about you or if they think you cant hear them. Most of the nurses in the Maternity ward are nice and helpful, but there are a few that are just not nice at all. They treat you like you are in prison and not as a patient in hospital. It makes the whole experience of being a new mom horrible because of how you are treated instead of making this one of the most wonderful moments of your life. Its as though having a baby is a crime and not something to be happy about. Im glad I dont have to sleep another night there. Im very grateful for the doctors and nurses who did help me as I had to go in for an emergency Ceasar 3+ weeks before my due date and they saved both mine and my babys lives, but the nursing staff in the ward could be better and treat patients better. I gave birth to my baby just before 4pm and was told Id get her once in the ward, I only got her after 11pm that night and no one could tell me why or where she was during that time. I was even moaned at for them having the wrong name on the arm bands when they copied the information from my admission sheet incorrectly. Also, dont expect hot water, they only have cold water and there is no soap or sanitizer in the bathrooms either. So take your own hand soap and sanitizers with you. Social distancing is also non-existent once you are inside the hospital and the elevators dont all work, so the few that do get packed like sardines with people even during covid. No one inside follows covid guidelines. You are also not allowed to bring in or eat your own food in the wards, you can only eat what the hospital gives you, no matter how bad the hospital food is. If you want to shower there, expect a cold shower only. As a patient, youll end up going home cold, hungry and dirty.

There are many things wrong in our country but we have many good places too. And this is one of them.Often hear bad publicity from this institution but I brought a seriously injured patient here on Saturday and only got the best service possible. This is a massive organ and if one thinks they are doing you a favour, being rude or any other complaint one must realize this is the way it is. Otherwise you will have to invest in a medical aid and wait there too. These people dont have the time to attend to every little issue because they have vast volumes flowing in and have to deal with real emergencies. That is what they are here for emergencies. And with that they are really good. They deal with patients on an internationally accepted triage system of work and prioritize patient on colohrs, green, orange and red. This is according to the severity of the injuries that the patient has. Green means good, orange needs help and red means priority. So if you are green it means you will have to wait for a while.Government policy dictates and this a child born from the marriage. It is like this in many other institutions. But if one needs serious medical help this is the place to be. Only the best but have challenges that we dont know about.
