A great Zoo to bring kids or have a picnic with your family. You can also bring your own food and drinks.
Wear very comfortable shoes, the Zoo is gigantic! The best experience is at the top where youll see most of the predators, not so many animals at the entrance of the Zoo.
Every time I return to the Zoo to attend an event the place looks worse than the time before. I must at least say that you can see that the people who is working there is trying their best to make a difference and the animals and nature of the zoo looks to be in a good condition. I just wish people would stop littering because all their litter ends up in the zoos river and this looks terrible.
You will never get board visiting the Pretoria Zoo. Good parking outside. Rent a golf cart maybe for the mountain areas, or just take a stroll through the whole Zoo. Plenty of animals to see. There are feeding times also. Make sure you visit the Aquarium too. Lots of sea creatures to see, kids love it.
Amazing variety of animals including all of the big 5 and more, including tigers, gorillas, hippos, kangaroos, koala bears. There was also an aquarium and reptile park and plenty of places to enjoy a sunny day. I spent about 4 hours here and could have spent longer had I not been pressed for time. Great zoo!
Had a nice family time it was quiet and interesting just after Christmas
Very misleading on how few animals they have, the maps in the zoo are not kept up to date on what animals they have. When you get to an enclosure it is miss labelled on what animal is in there, especially in the aquarium. The river running through is littered with trash and it doesn’t seem like they are to bothered to clean it.Don’t expect much.
The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is a massive 85-hectare zoo based in Pretoria just north of Johannesburg. It is SAs national zoo. Pretoria Zoo is one of the eight largest zoos in the world and one of the most highly-rated. A visit to Gauteng of Pretoria isnt complete with a visit to this amazing Zoo. Due to its size, it had golf carts to hire which makes it easier to get around this huge place. Ensure to take the kids, friends or family to this great experience.
A zoo is always a sad place to visit. If you really look into animals eyes, you can actually feel their captivity. They dont understand why they are secured in these small spaces. So that being said, l didnt really enjoy my visit. On the brighter side, they raised awareness towards certain animals brutality. And l kind of enjoyed the bird sanctuary or the paradise. It was more
Lovely atmosphere. Perfect for couples, families or even me-time. Food is allowed, there are braai facilities as well (free) and various picnic spots. Its a very large area and Id suggest you hire the golf cart as walking the whole place to see all the animals is equivalent to running a mini marathon 😂
Only down side was, there werent any kiosks open in the whole zoo except at the entrance.
Awesome experience for the whole family
It is a great place to be out with family, me nd my baby really did enjoy ourselves
It was awesome I enjoyed with my partner
It was very nice
A bit disappointed about how the animals are being kept...
It was a good experience. A pity the restaurant was closed on the Monday. Animals looked well cared for and the size of the enclosures was impressive. There are golf carts available for hire, but the signage advertising them was a bit to be desired. Would have taken one for sure had we known they were available.
Had so much fun
I was there again today. The zoo was clean and neat. The animals are well looked after. Some enclosures were empty, but I rather choose emty than hungry animals. The staff is very friendly and helpfull.I will support the zoo. They are trying their best. Well done.
Back in 2017 and 2018 , visiting this zoo was very niceI liked the fact that there is a huge variety of animalsThe zoo is huge , covering several acres i thinkFrom flying bird to crawlinfsnakes and lizards, you can enjoy going there with you family and your friendsWe rent a kart car to enjoy the place without walkingThe prices were affordable ( ot may not be for everybody) but riding inside the zoo was so cool but you need to present a driving licenseIt was very nice being there
Best place to take your kids to, and for picnic too
Great variety of animals, animals look happy and well fed. Clean walk ways
The best zoo
Excellent beautiful place.
Its extremely soothing here.
Animals and habitats are wellkept. Kids had a amazing time.
Zoo not well kept, alot of litter, not very well maintained, most animal exhibits closed, park staff very rude
Adopt an animal the zoo needs your help
Seeing a live elephant /leapard so close was like a dream
Beautiful place
The place needs more golf carts
Breath taking experience.
Its huge zoo👌
Good place to take the kids
Good atmosphere to take kids to see animals
Its a wonderful place and I enjoyed every minute I spent there
This is a beautiful place to be.You get to see a wide range of animals, birds, reptiles, water and sea creatures, including sharks. It boasts a huge space for family gatherings, braai areas, site seeing and many more stuff for young ones. Its a place you cannot be tired of.Entrance prices are very reasonable with schools getting discounts.
Best place to take your kids
Had a lovely day at the Pretoria zoo. Animals are healthy & well kept. We also took our own food in & had a picnic. Only reason Im giving 4 stars is that the cable car was out of order...
For one, definitely better condition than the Johannesburg Zoo. Animals are healthier and look happier, there are more of them and the land they are given is bigger.Whilst not a fan of caged operations for animals, one has to think about how their children will learn about them otherwise. We cant all afford an African Safari or trip up the Misty Mountains to look for Silverback Gorillas. For this reason Im glad the Pretoria Zoo has tried to maintain a good standard - at least from the outside for the animals. The overall management and maintenance could use a LOT of work - there were empty living areas and other areas presumably under construction but with nobody working on them. The rates for the snacks and icecream were atrocious - R30 for a soft serve cone. R20 for a packet of jelly tots...that type of thing. At R110 for adults to enter and R75 for kids older than 2, the additional parking pricing (R25) and that of the snacks starts to feel a bit like youre being ripped off.If the right people were put in place and rewarded for doing a good job this zoo can reach the level of awe it held 50 odd years ago. Also, be aware - the zoo is now smack bang in the middle of town, down a one-way road flooded with taxis. Be prepared. All in all this will make a good full day visit with the family, but prepare beforehand - pack a picnic, make time to rest and be prepared to walk as it is a huge property with loads to be seen.
The zoo does wonderful work with what they have. The animals are enriched and well cared for and the staff do good work to keep them healthy and happy. It can get quite busy on weekends and can look a bit worse for wear.
Winter has taken its toll and once it rains the Zoo will look good again . Good family outing
Was so good
Its big and having lot of animals
It had been better. It was a nice visit but it has been better. The feeding of animals are amazing, breath taking, but the polluted River contridicts it. The animals are all well fed and Im happy about that. Staff is polite and kind. No kiosk was open what a bummer, had to walk all the way to the entrance to get something to drink.
This place is not being properly maintained. The local restaurants has nothing exiting to offer besides very oily fries and a burger which is the best you can expect
Refreshing
Place was very nice and clean but was very disappointed as many enclosures were empty
This zoo is great to take your family to. There is every animal and lots of fun. It’s just a chilled place and highly recommend.
The Pta zoo has always been a great place to visit for families. I love the effort the staff put into really caring for each animal that is there.
Mostly stunning.. Needs public funding. Very interesting. Lots of walking
Nicely
Always a pleasure and fun filled experience to be here. Hire a golf cart for 2 hours and see everything and then enjoy the lush gardens with the family. Zoo is Huge
Animals seem happy and in great condition, the plant life is beautiful and makes it great to explore. There is always a cheery vibe and the zoo also has historical value and thus many stories to tell.
Not enough uniformed staff visible to talk to the crowds of school kids in the zoo. No education on littering and closing taps. Dust bins overflowing and kids drinking water from garden taps and leaving them running
Big animals are kept in poor condition with little to no water and no grass, not sure if its like that all the time but it Is now, ON A VERY HOT DAYOtherwise a very nice place with lots of animals and great amenities.
The zoo itself was good but we would recommend that you mark the root better with a clearer map on how to find the animals we wanted to see.Otherwise it was great. Keep up the good work
What a lovely outing. Kids just live it here. Not our first time and also not the last
Still well kept, and thoroughly worth it. The golf carts are also worth the wait for an enjoyable day
It was awesome
A great place for a family outing that includes education. A must see is my favorite animal- the okapi
Loved it
The zoo is not what I expected or remembered it to be. There were alot of vacant enclosures. The pollution was unsightly and disappointing. The cable cart was not in operation and the golf cart users were inconsiderate of pedestrians. You also need to take your own food with as there is only one kiosk which also serves as the restaurant.
Had a great time all enclosures are well kept and taken care of .the aquarium has a wide variety of fish ranging from South African fish to dish from multiple countrys and they all so boast a large variety of animals from buck to lions to penguins to elephants.would defiantly go again
Was really disappointed with my latest visit. Staff were quite unfriendly accross the zoo. Alot of empty or un-maintained cages/enclosures. Quite a few carts were not operational. If the same amount of energy that they put into trying to get you to take/buy their overpriced photos, went into running this establishment, this place would be much better.
Great place for kids! Safe parking. Great golf cart service. Relatively simple food.
Perfect time to unwind and bring your family.
They have all the facilities to make a seniors in this world comfortable
I had a wonderful day with my family on Sunday (1st December 2019)
Lots of empty cages and feels a bit run down - but worth a visit - hopefully it will improve to old standards again
Its so much amazing and I really enjoyed my self
Rustic surroundings, well looked after gardens and animal enclosures, variety of animals. Children enjoyed the outing thoroughly.
Love this place, not always perfect, but you can see they try very hard...
One of the few Government run areas we can rely on
Great to see different animals but you better be ready for a good walk if you dont hire a golf cart
I like it has many new animals it caters for the ages where you go in at reasonable price. There is transport for those who cant walk distances.
Great view of animals, animals well looked after.
Pretoria Zoo is a great place to see animals. My child loves the zoo
This place needs a magic touch honestly. It needs revival of some sort. I feel its not being taken care of well and as it should. Not sure whats causing the problem. Its dull.
Infrastructure isnt at its best. Decent outing for family but I think they definitely need to freshen things up.
Great fun
Cant get over this place. Still the best zoo in SA
Its beautiful, neat, safe and very informative.
Love love love the place lots of animals to see and its big
Lots of walking required. Must carry cold water for drinking. Must use cool clothes.
Wonderful visit!! Spent almost 5 hours here and could have spent more. Ate at the Flamingo restaurant which was also huge value for money.
Its a beautiful place especially now. Try to go when its not too hot.The animals can be a little antisocial.Put on lots and lots of sunscreen
It was Christmas day, full house and nice atmosphere
Not bad. Very big. Took us about 3 hours to do the whole thing. If u in a rush rather hire a golf cart. Was a bit disappointed though because a lot of the enclosures were empty due to maintenance so we missed out on quite a few animals
