We left Oudtshoorn immediately after a really nasty encounter with a traffic police officer in what we believe to have been a shake down when he saw our foreign driving licenses. Knowing the law we ignored his demands and he gave up eventually. Car was road legal and taxed, we were not speeding or performing any traffic violation, licenses were legal and in English. An IDP is a recommendation but not a legal requirement and we were well prepared. However if you try terrorise the tourists (especially the locally born ones), you hurt your towns finances. Instead of visiting shops to buy ostrich goodies, we headed back to the Cape Town peninsula. I will not spend money in a town where I am not made welcome. Visitors should avoid this areas and roads around it.
